    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    One of Lackey's Best

I find Tarma and Kethry two of Lackey's most appealing characters. (To say nothing of Warrl). The earlier book, Oathbound proceeds this--I don't think you have to read it to enjoy this book, but I'd recommend it highly too. That first book is more a collection of stories--this one is a true novel. I enjoy it for its depiction of a mercenary company, which is evocatively depicted here. It's nice to see a fantasy novel not just about a lone hero but comrades and the themes of not just honor, but friendship, partnership and family, and how they're developed through the actions of the book make this one of Lackey's best novels.

    Wow. That was fantastic.

This is the second of three(?) books detailing the adventures of the warrior Tarma and the magician Kethry, who are fast becoming my favorite fantasy adventurers. Or maybe Ms. Lackey is becoming my favorite fantasy writer (sorry Elizabeth Moon!). Who knows. All I really know is that I devoured this book like a starving man will devour a prime rib. This book, as opposed to the first in the series, is a traditional novel, in that it is one long story, rather than a collection of short stories. Please note that this does not make it better or worse than the first book, just different. The longer form does allow for a more in-depth story, however, and the story here is quite in depth. Without giving things away, let us simply say that Tarma and Kethry begin the book in the employ of a mercenary company, and by the end they have achieved pretty much all of their goals, as laid out in the first book. That, however, does not communicate how damn exciting the whole thing is. Open field combat, political intrigue, assassinations, mage duels, an insurrection, it all happens here. You wouldn't think that it would all work, but the pacing is so incredibly good that it all flows naturally from one to the other. Amazing stuff. I give this book my highest recommendation, though start with the first one, The Oathbound, if you haven't read that.

    Good Book

This was an awsome book. Merecedes Lackey is a great author. If you liked this book don't stop there. Read the Mage Wars Series... it's the best.

    Even better than the first!!!!!!!

This book was awesome! I thought that The Oathbound was good, but this was a lot better! It was really great way to end the series and as most of Misty's novels are. Tarma was just awesome in this book, although there weren't as many sword battles as in Oathbound. Kethry was characterized much better in this book though, and it was just awesome when Kethry got to her Adept-Mage level! If you liked the first, then read this book! And if you didn't like the first, then still read it! This book was just plain awesome!

    Mercedes Lackey rocks!

This ranks with all the rest of her books! An awesome series, with great character development (as with all her books)!
