Overview

USA Today bestselling author Catherine Anderson takes readers to a quaint wilderness town, where together, a man and a woman find a second chance at life-and love...

Determined to give her son Jeremy the childhood he deserves, Chloe Evans has left a tough past behind to start over in the charming town of Jack Pine, Oregon. But protecting Jeremy becomes a dicey proposition when he seeks out the most dangerous man in town, Ben Longtree, to heal his sick puppy. Chloe has been warned to stay away from Ben. But there's something about him that intrigues her...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The characters and plot twists in Only by Your Touch, Catherine Anderson's newest contemporary romance (after Always in My Heart), may feel familiar to the author's fans, but this by-the-numbers tale still possesses poignancy and charm. Determined to keep her sickly son safe, Chloe Evans divorces her abusive husband and moves to Jack Pine, Ore., where she meets the enigmatic Ben Longtree, a part-Indian veterinarian once arrested for murder. Chloe is struck by the man's kindness to animals and is deeply attracted to him, but at the same time, she must fend off a police deputy who tries to assert his claim over her in an ever more ominous fashion. The once-abused heroine, too-good-to-be-true hero and too-evil-to-be-believed villain are character types that Anderson's fans know well, but that won't stop readers (both old and new) from savoring the book's tender moments. Just a touch of magic.

Chloe Evans and her six-year-old son Jeremy both have wounds that need healing, as they move to the small Oregon town of Jack Pine and away from the city where Chloe¿s former husband harassed them constantly. With a new dispatcher¿s job at the county sheriff¿s office, plus plenty of hope and courage, the young woman sets out to make a new and safe life for her son. Starting with getting him the puppy he¿s always wanted, even though she knows they can barely afford the extra expense of its care. The puppy promptly comes down with parvovirus, and the local vet wants a substantial deposit before beginning treatment. Even then, it¿s probably hopeless. But that¿s a word that neither Chloe nor Jeremy is good at hearing ¿ and just before the puppy becomes ill, Chloe literally bumps into the town¿s other vet at the feed store. The other vet, who¿s licensed but no longer in practice, is a part-Shoshone who lives on isolated Cinnamon Ridge with his dementia-afflicted mother and a wolf-dog named Diablo. Which frightens Chloe and Jeremy more, the (apparently) aptly named Diablo or his owner, Ben Longtree, it¿s hard to say at first. But Longtree is the only person who may possibly be able to save Jeremy¿s new pet ¿ so up Cinnamon Ridge the little boy goes. After which his mother has no choice but to follow. I am not a reader of contemporary romances. This one, though, pulled me in with its characters and proceeded to hold me rapt until I¿d finished their story. Jack Pine is not the refuge Chloe thought it would be, as a new danger stalks her even in the supposed safety of the sheriff¿s office; and Ben Longtree is a complex and fully realized character who, we discover as the tale unfolds, needs Chloe and Jeremy every bit as much as they need him. A fine read, featuring spicy love scenes and realistic handling for all three generations of its characters. And with just a touch of magic, too ¿ courtesy of Ben¿s Shoshone heritage, which the author not-so-coincidentally shares.

    A touching Love Story

The story is one of feeling, love, and you instantly 'know' the characters. BUT the makeup of one of the main characters is just a bit too unbelieveable. And that is unfortuate as it does detract from the feeling that the character could be a person you have met - or would like to meet!!

    Nice, gentle love story

I really enjoyed this book very much and I actually felt sad when I finished it because the characters were just so gentle and touching. It's a really nice, gentle love story with valuable life lessons woven throughout. I love the Native American component. There is a little mystery but it doesn't overtake the story. It's just enough to add a little excitement.

delightful second chance at love tale

At thirty Chloe Evans feels old as she recovers from a nasty divorce although she tries to hide the ugliness from her preadolescent son Jeremy. To give the asthmatic Jeremy a fresh start, Chloe moves them to the resort town Jack Pine in Oregon where she takes a position as a police dispatcher. Jeremy¿s Golden Retriever puppy becomes very ill, but money is tight so a vet seems out of the question. Though dangerous rumors abound about local outcast former veterinarian Dr. Ben Longtree, a desperate Jeremy also learns of his magical healing touch. The child carries his beloved dog so that the pariah can treat him. Ben does not want any visitors especially since he illegally provides medical treatment to wild animals, but he cannot resist the lad or his dog. Chloe and Ben become acquainted and soon fall in love through the efforts of her matchmaking child. However, Deputy Bobby Lee Shuck has a new reason to harass and destroy the man he always hated as he wants to bed the newcomer anyway he can even though Chloe says no. ONLY BY YOUR TOUCH is an exciting rural contemporary romance that stars two charming lead protagonists whose emotional past and present demons are healed by each other. The secondary cast, especially her son, the law enforcement officials, and the animals provide different layers of depth. Shuck fails to have a redeeming quality as he even sinks low enough to threaten Jeremy to gain what he wants. Still, Catherine Anderson shows her deft touch with a delightful second chance at love tale. Harriet Klausner

    OMG I loved it!!!

I love Catherine Anderson and I have read many of her books before, but this one has to be one of my favorites! She is such a great author. Her eloquent words paint a picture in your head and it's like you're a part of this little town she has created. Her characters are marvelous and complex. I think I fell in love with Ben just like Chloe did. If you have never read one of Ms. Anderson's books I strongly recommend this one. It will touch your heart.

    Excellent!!!

This is the first book I read of Catherine Anderson and she is amazing. I truly enjoyed this story. I thought it to be predictable at first, but no, she gave a wonderful story of unique events. A beautiful love story that unfolds between layers of sadness and tradegy. She gently exposes wounds and shows you that love can heal anything. Excellent!

I 2nd the motion for 'gentle, love story'

This was a great book. It's been a while since I've read a novel of any kind. I am a mother of three and usually don't have time to read but I thought I'd take a chance and do something for myself. I am so glad that I did! I'm not in to those 'explicit sex' novels that could care less about the 'love' in a realtionship. This book has several 'love scenes', but this one was just absolutely lovely and sweet!!!!! But definitely not boring. I will be purchasing some more of Catherine Ander
