Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

An "otomen" as defined by this book is "[a] male who has feminine hobbies, skills, or way of thinking." Asuka, the title otomen of this well-drawn comedy, secretly reads shojo manga, makes stuffed animals and prefers caramel macchiatos to coffee. Forbidden by his mother from girlish behavior after his transvestite father abandoned the family, Asuka takes on a very masculine public character. He is nationally ranked at judo, karate and kendo. Asuka's tragedy is somehow hilarious. He falls for Ryo, the nongirly daughter of a manly martial arts instructor who finds Asuka unacceptable as a friend, let alone a potential suitor: "Men don't go in the kitchen!" he bellows. The strange deus ex machina character Junta acts as a catalyst to bring Asuka and Ryo together while enjoying Asuka's elaborate bento lunches. The over-the-top gender stereotyping is ham-handed at times, but reveals interesting insight into what the Japanese consider the most manly and most girly extremes. The strong artwork carries the comedy premise further than the script could alone, and the manga-within-a-manga, Love Chick, is a hilariously accurate parody of typical shojo. Kanno's other manga in translation include the sci-fi series Blank Slate and angel comedy Soul Rescue. (Feb.)

    I love this manga!

Honestly, I wasn't expecting to buy this manga when I entered the Barnes and Noble. I had picked out three manga and was ready to pay, but then the hottie on the cover of this manga caught my eye. I picked it up, read the back, flipped through, and decided to give it a try.

I was immediately drawn in by the wonderful art and the characters. The main character is so adorable and the other characters are just as wonderful as he is. I had never before come across a manga that made me laugh with joy as much as this one did!

The story is unique and not something you normally come across. I absolutely loved this manga, it's pure genius in my opinion. It was absolutely hilarious and delightful and I don't regret picking it up that day. I would recommend this to any one who enjoys reading a wonderful, hilarious story that you could read over and over again!

An manga's inside look at Metrosexuals

Ever felt like you had to hide your true self in order to fit in and fulfill the expectations of others? Well, main character Asuka knows how it feels.

Expected to be super-masculine purely because he's a boy, Asuka had to hide his interests in sewing, cooking, flowers and shojo manga (among other girly things.) He's actually pretty good at the act, too -- captain of the Kendo team, Black Belt in Judo and Karate, and better than average student. He's the manliest of men. . . until he meets the girl of his dreams. After that, every time Asuka thinks of her, he ends up creating cute plushies, cooking amazing bento lunches, and buying copies of his favorite manga, "Love Chick."

Little does Asuka know, the manga-ka (author) of "Love Chick" is one of his classmates, and he uses Asuka as the basis for his female main character! Not only that, but the girl he's crushing on has a thing for manly men. What's a love-sick "Otomen" (a man with girly hobbies) to do?

I loved this manga! The characters are well developed and believable. The circumstances are fun and familiar. And best of all -- it's really funny!

I really enjoyed this volume and others on this series...

... because it is just so cute. I love the art, I enjoy the concept of how hard it is to be true to yourself (a little bit like Shugo Chara deals with the same topic, but in this case it's about a boy). The characters are really lovable and the mystery behind the story of his family's painful past keeps the story moving forward. I'd recommend it to anyone that enjoys Shoujo manga and titles such as Shugo Chara, Beauty Pop, Corda D'Oro, etc.

    Tee hee... ^_^

    ^^
I know a guy who is just like Asuka-kun. He's cute and chivalrous and strong (yes, he's into martial arts, too) and wonderfully feminine in all the same ways as Asuka. And one day he brought me a delicious and beautiful bento. It's so much fun to find a manga about otomen. I love boys like that. I started reading this manga and finished both 1 and 2 in a day. I can't wait till 3 comes out!

    :D awesome

This is a very good manga. I reccomend it to people who are tired of seeing a girl being the main character in a shojo :) All in all it's a cute story with some roles reversed :D
