Meet the Author

Born in Jackson County, Michigan, in 1900, Holling Clancy Holling graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1923. He then worked in a taxidermy department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and spent time working in anthropology under Dr. Ralph Linton. During this period, he married Lucille Webster and within a year of their marriage accepted a position as art instructor on the first University World Cruise, sponsored by New York University. For many years, Holling C. Holling dedicated much of his time and interest to making books for children. Much of the material he used was known to him first hand, and his wife, Lucille, worked with him on many of the illustrations.

Probably the best book on hermit crabs ever written

It was thirty-six years ago that I first came upon this gem of a book, and my love for it has never diminished. Superbly written and illustrated, Pagoo is an excellent book to launch a child's (or an adult's) interest in the oceans in general, and hermit crabs in particular. I cannot describe the joy I experienced when I found this book was still in print and I obtained a copy to read to my daughter. It opened her eyes to the world of the anomurans, and gave her a hightened appreciation of how interesting and special our own pet (aquatic) hermit crabs are. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS.

A childhood favorite (first read in 1976)

This book is absolutely beautiful. A young child will be awed by the pictures, and an older child will be in thrall to the story, especially when Pagoo falls into the dark, scary 'Deep Hole!' A must-read for all tomboys or budding naturalists!
