Overview

Into Sydney, capital of Britain's infant colony of New South Wales, sails the frigate Tempest. She is one of His Majesty's ships employed in the policing of the new southern trade routes. Her captain is Richard Bolitho, yearning for a return to England.

Instead he is dispatched on a mission to the islands of the Great South Sea, where he must face the hazards of fickle winds, pirates, and savage islanders. But he is menaced, too, by deeper fears: the men of the Bounty have mutinied in these same waters; and from distant Europe comes news of a revolution in France.

Alexander Kent is the pseudonym of Douglas Reeman, a contemporary British writer. Drawing on his extensive experience and research, Alexander Kent writes with engaging authenticity. His best-selling Richard Bolitho Novels (numbering 23 volumes) have achieved world-wide sales of over 20 million copies and have been translated into nearly two dozen languages.

Editorial Reviews

New York Times Book Review
Kent doesn't make it easy for his hero. But he does endow him with the authenticity that makes these adventures the closest thing to C. S. Forester still coming off the presses.
Library Journal
These are the four most recent titles in Kent's ongoing adventures of 18th-century fighting British sailor Richard Bolitho. Good fun for fans of nautical fiction. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

    Superb Historical Nautical Fiction

C.S. Forstner has nothing on Alexander Kent. Horatio Hornblower has been my hero since boyhood (six decades ago). He is now joined by Richard Bolitho. The six previous Bolitho novels have served only to whet my appitite for more. Both Richard Bolitho and Horatio Hornblower are individuals in whose exploits in which I wish I could have had the opportunity to participate. There is an addage in the navy, 'Men belong in ships and ships belong at sea'. Captain Richard Bolitho is a prime example of the full meaning of what it means to 'go down to the sea in ships'.
