McCaffrey continues to develop her future world in which psionic Talents, once feared and despised, are by now necessary to the comfort and conduct of society. Following the events in To Ride, Pegasus and set a generation or so before The Rowan , this era finds mankind not yet having settled planets outside the solar system. Even with officially mandated birth control, the world teems with too many people. Essential to the construction of a space station being built to serve as springboard to the stars are the services of the Talents--particularly the telekinetics, who can move objects by mental power. Telepath Rhyssa Owen, a top official of the Center for Parapsychic Talents, must contend with the station's construction manager, who treats Talents brutally and otherwise discourages them from working for her. Meanwhile two youngsters are found to be unusually Talented: Peter Reidinger overcomes paralysis to develop the first gestalt with electrical generators (this becomes the basis for future space travel), while Tirlap, an illegal child from the vertical slums, facilitates communication among a wide variety of cultures.     my first taste and i was hooked

    As my first experience with Anne McCaffrey, this book sucked me into the world of the Talents. Even though I jumped into the series, To Ride Pegasus was a worthy 'prequel' for me, filling in the spaces in the history of the Talents. This well-crafted coming of age story is ideal for those who are growing and changing themselves.

    Love this series!

    I loved Anne McCaffrey from the moment I read 'The Rowan'. All of her works are wonderful, but i have to say the talent series is by far my favorite. Some say Pern is better, but in my opinion, this is far far above.

    WAY COOL!

    This was an awesome book! I've always been into psychic stuff, and I loved the way thi book was written. I read The Rowen, because my mom picked it up for me and loved it, then I picked up this book. Incrediable, a must

    Great, but not Mccaffreys best.

    I treally enjoyed these books, and would like to see more of them,but I still think them pale in comparison to the dragonriders of pern series.
