Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Monks
Young Percy loves to play and run and jump, but sometimes he gets so busy he forgets to listen. When Percy's attention is focused elsewhere he almost misses some important—and fun—activities, like bringing his favorite toy to class for show and tell, learning a new game, being safe at the pool, and eating ice cream. To maximize comprehension, there is a short spotlight on each lesson at the end of each story, accompanied by an overall review with five discussion questions on the last pages. Each question is focused on listening, prompting the readers to think about the many reasons why it is important to pay attention to others. Throughout the book, clear descriptions are paired with vibrant, charming images. Readers will be drawn to the friendly characters, embodied in a variety of adorable animals, such as giraffes, rabbits, cats, and a koala and porcupine. Parents and teachers will appreciate the many opportunities the book provides to uncritically discuss the importance of listening with young children. Overall, this book would make an excellent addition to the classroom and home. Reviewer: Kathleen Monks

K-Gr 1—Designed to teach school readiness skills, Left, Right illustrates the difference between left and right while Percy shows the importance of listening. The stories are realistic but concept-focused, making them more useful for classroom use than for recreational reading. The digital cartoons of the animal characters reinforce the messages well, and are appealing enough to hold children's attention.—Laura Stanfield, Campbell County Public Library, Ft. Thomas, KY
