Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Behind the puerile punning names and extraterrestrial setting stands a modest, winning story about a commander who builds a company of misfits, rejects and even a few aliens into a disciplined military outfit. Tricked into taking on the worst detachment in a far outpost of the Space Legion, Captain Willard Phule uses every resource in his control, particularly his immense wealth and his knowledge of how to motivate and lead people, to whip his skeptical crew of strays into shape and make them feel that they have, at last, found a home. This lighthearted tale is part science fiction, part spoof, part heart-warmer, its farcical elements pitted against the proper, stuffy voice of Phule's butler, Beeker, whose wry commentary precedes each section of narrative. Phule rings true as an astute entrepreneur of the human (and nonhuman) spirit. The psychological acumen that colors Asprin's characterizations, Phule in particular, gives the book the verisimilitude that is the essence of successful science fiction. Asprin wrote the Myth series. (July)

    Great metaphor for leadership!

As a M.Y.T.H Inc. fan, I quickly grabbed this book and really liked it. It's a bit different than the MYTH series, but worth a read. It's also a great book on leadership - it is through Phule's ability to find the best in people, and then have them build confidence in that "best", that the rag-tag team that has been given up on by everyone (except Phule) rise to the top and save the universe! I think this book should be a must read in all business schools! (though it may cause a few of the hard core business students' heads to explode due to the creativity and plain silliness...)

You'd be a Phule not to pick this one up...

Look... here's how it is: I like 'Hard' sci-fi (read: Asimov, Gibson, Stephenson) or a great military sci-fi (Weber!, Moon or Ringo - at least until reading his 'Hell's Faire' - rotten ending to a great series). Whatever, I'm not really a fan of tongue-in-cheek sci-fi. So, it should come as no surprise that, while looking for my next series - and finding that the first books of all those I'd had an interest in were sold out - I found myself scowling miserably at the prospect of reading something called 'Phule's Company.' Two days later I called the local book store to be sure they had a copy of 'Phule's Paradise' put aside for me. It's that good. The thing is, the cover and the blurb on the back are misleading. Sure it's got some humorous side-lights, but it's not a comedy. Not really. It is an interesting, highly entertaining, if light, read. A character driven tale about what would happen if a young, quick-thinking business type found himself with a military commission. So take it from a grumpy curmudgeon that's been a sci-fi addict for too many decades: the next time you find yourself between bouts of killing aliens and destroying Earth through nanotech, grab Phule's Company. It's worthwhile.

An unorthodox, and very wealthy, new commander takes over as leader of a misfit company of foul-ups. I find this novel very funny and entertaining. But, Shakespeare it ain't. If you are looking for a fun afternoon of reading, go for it. If you are looking for something profound you should look elsewhere.

A very slow start to the series

I picked up this book on the cheap at a local book fair. I am somewhat familiar with the author's previous work through the Thieves' World series he helped edit, but that was it. I figured that this book would be a good way to sample some of his other work. In the end, I must admit that I was underwhelmed. There just wasn't really anything here to capture my interest. There were some interesting characters, but they weren't actually doing anything interesting, and because of that I found it very hard to finish the book, as I simply always had something better to do. The basic plot is that our protagonist, Willard Phule, is put in charge of a bunch of washouts on a backwater world. He whips the unit into shape, gains face in a contest with an army unit, and fends off an alien 'invasion.' The invasion and battle with the army unit take up 40 pages, though, so we have a good 190 pages of Phule's interaction with the members of his unit. I found this very boring, and it was almost like the author was secretly writing a management book about getting the best out of your people by focusing on their strengths. There wasn't any real action, there wasn't any adventure, it was just funny little stories about these quirky people in the unit. Very much not my thing. Other stories in the series are supposed to include more action, but I doubt I will be giving them a try anytime soon.

    A Ten Hut

Phule has started his military carrer of right, NOT! he has start it with a court marshall. Phule is forced to go to a distant plant to help the in habitance to stay in order but a new alien theart has come up and has pick phules company as it's target. I would recomand this book to older avid readers because of some adult jokes and comments it also is a little hard to understand and comperhend one of the things are the juornal entrys because they are confusing.
