Overview

Olivia Lawson is peeved when ex-ace pitcher turned soap opera star Noah Falcon roars back into Cricket Creek, Kentucky, after all these years, to take the lead opposite her in the community theater's summer play. Noah's beloved hometown is having major financial woes and needs his status to turn this small-town play into a big-time hit. But Noah has bigger plans for this small town. And this time he's determined to show Olivia he's not just playing around-he's playing for keeps.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
McLane's trademark devilish dialogue is in fine form for this series launch set in a fictional Kentucky town. Recently dumped by his hit soap opera, former Major League baseball player Noah Falcon has returned home for a bit of R&R before braving the wider world again. Olivia Lawson, a schoolmarm with a voice "like Southern Comfort sliding over cracked ice," will never let Noah forget that he snubbed her back when she was Cricket Creek High School's resident bookworm, though he's quick to admire the ways she's blossomed since then. In a narrative long on "no place like home" parables, the erotic frisson that occurs when the former classmates star together in a local play prevents the story from becoming clichéd, and a lavish finale brings the fairy tale romance to a perfect conclusion. Playing For Keeps is a heartwarming story

Playing For Keeps (A Cricket Creek Novel) by LuAnn McLane is just simply delightful.

Olivia Lawson is a highly respected teacher in Cricket Creek, KY. She loves putting her energy in the community theater in town. Foremost she loves to act and secondly Olivia wants to help her friend Madison's play to be successful. Olivia isn't to happy with her friend for hiring soap opera actor and former baseball star as her leading man. Olivia still holds a grudge against the home town hero that didn't know she was alive in high school.

Noah Falcon's soap gig came to a crashing end when his character was killed off. He comes home to Cricket Creek to get his bearings back on track. Noah missed the sense of belonging that he got there and is more then willing to help the ailing town get back on its feet too. But first he has to get back into Olivia's good graces. He knows his acting skills need to come up several notches and convinces Olivia that she can whip him into shape.

Olivia and Noah's characters in the play are former lovers looking for that second chance at love. Spending so much time together the chemistry they need for the play spills over into real life. Olivia and Noah's connection is funny and all out sexy. They both discover there is more to each other then just what you see at first look. They both know the play won't go on forever and what will happen when Noah's former life wants him back?

Playing For Keeps is a perfect blend of southern flair with smoking hot romance. You find yourself not only routing for Olivia and Noah but her friend Madison's romance as well. Also the city of Cricket Creek finds a tender spot in your heart and you want it to flourish. I am eager to read the next story in this series.

This Cricket Creek contemporary romance is a fun tale

Former Major League baseball pitcher Noah Falcon turned actor has been fired from the soap opera he performed on. Decided a respite is in order Noah goes back to his old Kentucky home after two decades away.

Olivia Lawson attended Cricket Creek High School with Noah; she never forgot that the star athlete ignored the bookworm except when she tutored him. He does not want to ignore her now as he thinks the schoolteacher is beautiful and her voice sexy, but she knows from the tabloids he is a playboy. As their attraction grows, they perform together on stage in a local production where she realizes he cares about the play, the people and the town. The audience can see that love flows between them, but she still she fears his rejection once he goes back to Hollywood.

This Cricket Creek contemporary romance is a fun tale due to the brisk banter between the lead couple. With a strong secondary cast mostly the townsfolk who encourage the protagonists as they fuss, fight and fall in love, fans will enjoy LuAnn McLane's mantra that "There's no place like home."

    Not what I hoped

This book is okay. I feel like this book is caught between two edits. One minute, secondary characters Madison and Jason are deciding whether to go out on their first date. The next, they're sleeping together and have been for weeks, but based on other events with the main characters, only one day should have passed. That's just one example of things that just didn't make sense in the book. The book attempts to be lighthearted and for the most part succeeds, but in some cases some things should have been explored more in depth (i.e. Olivia's reasons for being scared of a relationship with Noah). Overall, okay. However, for a better small town romance series, I suggest you check out Robyn Carr, Barbara Freethy, or Susan Mallery.

This town will keep you coming back!

Cricket Creek, Kentucky is a quiet river town which relies on tourism to keep going. But like many other places, the economy has hit hard and people in Cricket Creek Are worried about surviving. Enter Noah Falcon--a favorite son who parlayed his good looks and notoriety on the baseball field into a starring role on a soap opera. But like the town, Noah has hit some bumps in the road. So when he roars back into Cricket Creek in his shiny Corvette, he hopes that the town can help him as much as he wants to help the town. Olivia Lawson has other ideas. A beloved English teacher at the high school, Olivia feeds her need to be on stage with roles in local theater productions, but she has no desire to share the stage with Noah. Remembering how dismissed she felt by him in high school, there is no way Olivia wants to revisit those old feelings. Of course, their hearts have other ideas. Both Noah and Olivia learn that who they were is not necessarily who they are and after a lot of years and a lot of growing up, Olivia and Noah find a way to help the town and each other. This book has the hallmark of any great series...a great setting. I loved how Luanne developed the town itself. The theater, the school, the local bar and diner give the town a strong culture and the characters that populate Cricket Creek will become old friends as the series progresses. Finally, as hero and heroine, Olivia and Noah couldn't be more different which is what made this perfect. He chipped away at her stern exterior and she helped him see how home, and a sense of belonging, can help a wandering heart find comfort. They are charming together--their bickering, their uncertainty about each other and eventually their chemistry is endearing and had me rooting for them. With a wonderful cast of characters firmly in place, I'll look forward to the next Cricket Creek novel.
