Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Sammy Perez is determined to become a professional baseball player in the Big Leagues. When a Roadrunner teammate is seriously injured by an aluminum bat, the coach decides the team will now play in a tournament that requires wooden bats. This is a major tournament in Austin, Texas and scouts from the Major Leagues will be there to look over the players. Sammy knows this is an enormous opportunity to get noticed. Since Sammy always used aluminum bats, he is finding it very hard to adjust to bats made of wood and is in a terrible batting slump. His quick temper and lack of home runs only adds to his difficulty. Another problem is the suggestion made by Sammy's father that he should try using performance-enhancing drugs. Gus, a fellow teammate and friend, talks Sammy into going on a double date to meet a girl named Kelsey. This adds to Sammy's discomfort because he really likes Kelsey but feels he must totally concentrate on baseball. During the second day of play, Sammy pulls off a double steal and shows great poise when his broken bat seriously injures the third baseman on the opposing team. Much to his surprise a scout from the San Diego Padres shows an interest in him. He decides he must work hard to improve his hitting, all around play and to double date again. Fortunately, his father also realizes that Sammy does not need drugs to become a top rate player. This realistic (but not preachy) story will surely appeal to boys interested in baseball. Since it is only a little over one hundred pages, it is also a good selection for reluctant readers. If other titles from the "Travel Team" series are in the collection or it fills a need, add this to the purchase list. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
