I would happily recommend Prison Ship to any fan of Military Sci-Fi

Finally a little original science fiction.... I greatly enjoyed this book and am waiting to see what Michael Bowers can do for an encore....
We had heroes and villians, treachery and intrigue, and a galactic war with plenty of great battle actions. We had mutineers and a small group of loyalists fighting to overcome the terrible odds against them. A very good story for my taste.
My only disappointment would be that the hero of the story didn't follow through with the romance offered to him at the end....

    Good Read

This book had believable characters and a fast moving plotline. After the first chapter or two, the story relaxes into a good rhythm. The main character is a little stiff, but there are enough off-beat characters around him to liven the book up. This book was a good blend. It had a SF base with military intrigue and a bit of mystery thrown in. It could have had some of the minor characters do a little more (like having them pilfer more supplies to add more of a McCale's Navy or A-Team feel), but it definitely has enough to keep the reader's interest. My biggest complaint is that in the beginning there are too many short sentences that don't vary in structure, but this probably only bothers me because I'm an English teacher. I would definitely read another by the same author.

    I Also Recommend:

    Michael Bowers Prison Ship

The premise was good. The characters had potential. And at times, the pacing kept me reading. However, the beginning of the book was confusing and required rereading to follow (the author assumed too much by an audience unfamiliar with his work). During the story, I found the literary devices and development inconsistent: at times well thought out, but at other times amateurish. I found the author bringing in themes that never became part of the story. I found most of the characters questionable (the author has little understanding concerning military behavior). The author needs to understand more concerning the way people behave and think in general. He needs to understand more concerning how action sequences develop and relate the scenes to the audience in a way that helps us underderstand what's goings on (some major scenes happened so quickly and assumed people succeed in impossible ways). He also needs to understand what the audience wants to hear. Some characters seemed silly or sissy-like, and this is a military book!! The only reason I finished the book was through sheer determination, hoping it would get better. It did at times, but I was dissappointed overall. Before buying another one of his books, I would rent one at the library (the author will have to prove himself before I buy another one).
On a positive note, I believe the author had good concepts, but he hasn't delivered in the writing. There were chapters that were very exciting, but they didn't last throughout. Perhaps collaborating with another author, one with a better grasp of story telling, would better launch his career.

    Save your money

This book is uninspired. The characters are remarkably shallow and unappealing, the plot is silly and contrived, the setting is undeveloped and vague.

I couldn't finish this book. I found myself thinking, time and time again, "why would the characters act that way?" or "how inconsistent and poorly realized the technology is". Finally, I just decided I was wasting my time, and gave up on the book.

Yeah, the pace of the book moved fast--there was certainly no time spent developing characters or deepening the plot--but it required such a suspension of belief that it was beyond credible.

I like simple, action-filled books, I don't want to have to think about what the meaning of a book is. But I found myself scoffing at the characters and plot in this book just too many times. It feels like it was written by an adolescent.

I keep hearing about how difficult it is to get a book published, particularly by unknown authors. How did this book ever make it?

I'm sorry I wasted my money.
