When Chad Phelps is killed in a car wreck, also killing the driver of another vehicle, The Phelps family is torn apart as each thinks the other blames them for Chad's death.
A lawyer gets hold of Melanie Johnson and feeds on her longing to have a legacy of her dead son. The friends and relatives of Andie Phelps mean well, but they do not help the situation when they boycott the store where Melanie Johnson works
The story kept me riveted until the last page.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged."A Promise to Remember", by Kathryn Cushman, is a story about how two very different families deal with grief. Chad Phelps and Jeff Johnston are killed in a car wreck. The Phelps family is wealthy and live in an exclusive area of Santa Barbara, California. Melanie Johnston is a single mom and works in a grocery store to earn a living. Chad Phelps had been drinking the night he collided with Jeff Johnston.
This book provides a look at how the families go through denial, anger, depression and finally acceptance in dealing with the loss of their teenage sons.
This is a Christian fiction book but it is not preachy. Christian beliefs and values are used by both families to move forward and accept this tragedy. The theme of the story is forgiveness.
I could really relate to this book because I was in a head-on collision with a drunk driver in 1992. I went through many of the same feelings that were portrayed in this book. This is a very helpful book for anyone who has gone through a traumatic experience. It will help you get things in the proper perspective.

When There's Nothing Left But Memories... Andie Phelps is the envy of Santa Barbara. A devoted mother with a loving son and a successful husband, her greatest joy comes from reaching out to others... Melanie Johnston is the envy of no one. A single mom who works long hours to pay the bills, and her greatest joys relate to her teen daughter and son. Then the accident that changes everything. When opposite worlds collide, the impact reaches far beyond these mothers' personal losses. Two wounded women...Two families seeking hope...A community torn apart... How far will they go to fulfill...A Promise to Remember.
My Review - this book took me a while to get into but I loved all the faith in the story. It got better toward the end and I know my pregnancy has something to do with the fact that it took me so long to read this book. But overall it was okay.

A thought provoking debut that has this reader looking forward to her next novel.

Two families grieving lost sons make diverse attempts to deal with their pain. Although the main protagonists are the boys¿ mothers, a husband, a sister and friends take different, sometimes extreme, measures to compensate for the emptiness in their lives. Cushman weaves a captivating story that makes it impossible to put this book down. Her unique gift for deep characterization puts the reader inside the heads and hearts of each member of the saga, even the slimy attorney who hopes for financial gain through one mother¿s sadness. This wonderful debut novel will keep readers watching for another chance to read more exciting, quality fiction from this author. Hopefully, she will follow some of the characters into her next book.

Wow was my first reaction. This gripping tale of loss, love and forgiveness is one of the best I've read. The spiritual thread arose naturally out of the characters' lives and was never forced. Melanie's discovery and decision was one of the most natural I've read, brought about by a series of circumstances¿just like real life. Artfully blended honest emotions, realistic dialogue, and characters all add up to a memorable read, allowing me to suspend disbelief. Cushman is a new author to watch.
