Overview

At the age of seventy-three, New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Browne is ready to tell the whole story of her extraordinary life. In Psychic, we meet the woman behind the public figure: from the child receiving her first visits from the spirit world to the teenager doubting her own sanity; from the new mother living through staggering highs and lows to the burgeoning celebrity, and, ultimately, the successful, happily married woman she is today. Filled with never-before-told stories and otherworldly encounters, Psychic is a riveting account of how Sylvia Shoemaker, a traditional girl from Missouri, became world-famous psychic Sylvia Browne.

Nothing is off-limits. Sylvia tells the little-known truths behind her three failed marriages—including physical abuse, bankruptcy, and legal troubles—and the financial and emotional damage they wreaked. She revisits her personal demons and describes her physical challenges, including her relatively recent discovery that she'd suddenly gone blind in one eye. And then there is the greatest surprise of all: Sylvia tells how, once she had reached her seventies, and believed her romantic life was over, the real Mr. Right finally—impossibly—showed up.

While the press has freely, often bitterly, weighed in on Sylvia's most painful stories, she has remained quiet—until now. Unlike any other book Sylvia has written, Psychic reaches deep beneath the surface of her life, including professional and personal experiences that she is sharing publicly for the first time. With candor, warmth, and a great deal of humor, Sylvia Browne has written the singularly captivating tale of a life lived in two worlds, filled equally with harsh earthly realities and mesmerizing spiritual insights.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Media psychics come and go, but Sylvia Browne seems to go on forever. Now 73 and in her fourth decade of psychic readings, she has survived controversies, scandals, three failed marriages, legal troubles, and physical maladies, but this earnest Midwesterner just keeps on ticking. (And quite profitably, too: At one point, her $750 half-hour phone consultations had to be booked four years in advance.) In Psychic, Browne discusses not only her gifts and career, but also her abusive marriages, her financial problems, and her private moments when she's not a seer. (Hand-selling tip: This book is far more personal and revelatory than her 1998 Adventures of a Psychic.)

Publishers Weekly
Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker was born into what she describes as a 300-year psychic family legacy. Inheriting her gifts directly from her Grandmother Ada, her psychic abilities would lead to best selling books, including The Other Side and Back, numerous tapings of The Montel Williams Show and Larry King Live, and even a guest appearance on The Young and The Restless. With humor, candor, and clarity, Shoemaker, founder of the Novus Spiritus Gnostic Christian Church, shares everything from doppelgängers to past lives. Even non-believers may find her life surprisingly traditional; after ending an abusive first marriage, she grounded herself in family, the study of theology and psychology, teaching, and raising her two sons. Her zest and passion for life in this world and beyond is evident on every page and photos of Browne with her family and friends like actress Shirley MacLaine accentuate her rich, unusual journey. Be Open

I have no idea why people give this 1 or 2 stars. I have read most all of Sylvia's books and get something out of them each time I read one.
In this book Sylvia shares a lot more of her personal stories than her psychic ones. She had a few no good husbands and abuse to overcome. (Remember, psychics are not psychic about their owns lives.) I gained even more respect for her when she took in a neighborhood abused girl. All these years I thought that was her real daughter!
Sylvia has given me lots to think about in all her books. She is an author I consistently turn to.
To the reviewers who say she is a liar, I am sorry you missed the point. Her words push me TOWARD God, not away from.

Readers a chance to get to know her

Sylvia Browne has authored 22 bestselling books and was one of the first psychics to openly share her visions and perceptions with the public. She has worked with police on missing person cases and many different investigations, worked side-by-side with well known celebrities, and has made countless TV and media appearances. She now offers her readers a chance to get to know her on a different level with her autobiography, Psychic. The book begins with her life as a small child and how she just "knew" things very early on. Browne discloses the details of her childhood, school years with the nuns, marriages, divorces, legal troubles, health issues, and a few funny and often scary stories from the other side. A very interesting and enjoyable read that offers a new side of Sylvia Browne. - Jelina Vance, New Connexion Journal

    no way

I know first hand that she is a liar and a phony. She steals money from people. I read this book even knowing who and what she really is and I was disturbed. Please don't buy into this woman. She plays on peoples emotions.
