Holder's writing slips gracefully from poetry to shock to dark humor. His humor is sometimes so subtle that it encourages the reader to go more slowly and process every detail so as not to miss a clever quip, which is in direct conflict with the desire to read faster to find out what's going to happen next. Unlike the typical novel of this genre, which tends to be somewhat "fluffy" and shallow, Ransom X feels deep and intricate. The characters and story, however, capture the reader's attention and interest from the very beginning. Images spring from Holder's words, creating a clear picture in the mind's eye of the people and places he describes. His dialog is sharp and meaningful, and his characters are complex, quirky, and refreshingly appealing. Ransom X is a truly enjoyable read, and without a doubt, a sign of great things to come from an extremely talented writer.

The story is good and the action keeps you turning the pages. If the editing and proof reading for errors had been better I would have given a better over all rating. Mis-used words, and errors in the punctuation hinder the flow of the story. I hope the next book is edited much better.

This is my first novel and I have a lot to learn. I appreciate the comments from all of the reviewers. I am working on a cleaner version, but it takes weeks to update to the site.
I've begun the next book in the series.
I am on www.authorsden.com if you want to contact me.

When I down loaded this book I didn't have high expectations but it was free containing 345 pages so I thought I'd give it a try. I was blown away by how good it was. It grabbed me and I couldn't stop reading.
FBI Agent Legacy is brilliant and totally unable to deal with other agents or people in general. Because he is the very best interrogator known to the free world, many distrust him and he really doesn't care. He lives in his own world closing cold cases in the basement of the FBI and that's how he likes it. Now he's being jerked from his cocoon to assist in a current case that has a direct tie to the FBI. While women are being kidnapped, tortured and thoroughly abused, there are no ransom demands. While Legacy continues to protest that his way of solving crime takes to long to be of immediate assistance he comes on board. What follows is unbelievable betrayal on every level by those he trusts. The unspeakable murderers continue their assault and the plot continues to twist and turn. Great characters and plot, this is a must read! I can't wait to read his next book!

The general story was good, but there were so many grammatical errors (here instead of him, slow instead of slope) that it was painful to read. The publisher should be ashamed and the editor fired. Every chapter had at least one if not more word errors. I had to stop reading figure out what word should have been used and then reread it again loosing the flow of the story. Good thing it was a free book because if I had paid for the book I would have demanded a refund.

The story here was fantastic. However, as a few others have noted, the editing of the book was atrocious. I could barely make sense of it at some points, only to have things return to normal a few pages later.
Thumbs up on the story - thumbs down on the technical stuff.
Question for IB Holder: Is Martin's last name Legace or Legacy? I have seen it both ways so many times that I have no idea. Even on your own page at Author's Den you spell it both ways. Confusing!

I think that the editor got the message and I thank him or her for that. I REALLY like the book, and now I enjoy the flow of the writing too.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. The author's sharp attention to character details makes this book a thoroughly satisfying read, coupled with a shocking twist to what would ordinarily be a ransom demand. In fact, there is no demand from the criminal who kidnaps young women for a fate truly horrendous. Martin Legace, an FBI interrogator whose own wife's murder has led him and his teen daughter to a deeply troubled and paranoid existence, is forced to take on a missing person case led by over-achiever Agent Wagner, not by her demands but his own demons. As the plot unfolds, we continue to climb into the characters minds and to understand their every move and thought as they follow a trail that leads to a deadly Internet game. The author succeeds in bringing us down the path to the unspeakable crime, all the while finding ourselves walking with them, be it the two FBI agents or the criminal. And sometimes it takes us to places we'd rather not be, yet we have to go. I sense Legace's character is good for many more stories.

I couldn't believe some of what I was reading, yet I believe some of it has really happened, maybe not this same way but in some way. You can actually feel your there with the victim, and you can feel their fear. You also feel evil and the mask of evil. This book was hard to put down. All you wanted to see was the victim get rescued, to survive their ordeal, and yet you knew if they did, there wasn't much hope they would ever be truly normal again, how could you be normal after going thru what they went thru. A real page turner.. Read.. You will see what I mean...

Great characters...Legace is a keeper and I can't wait to read the next book. I really liked this book, however, the formatting on the Nook is all messed up, and there had to be over 500 spelling and grammatical errors, which was really distracting.

The pace was quick, the writing very intellectual (though some editing is required for consistency sake), and I cannot wait for the next installment.

I would stongly recommend some serious editing on this book. This is my only criticism, as I am not one to critisize someone's artisitic expression. Otherwise, Legace is a compelling charachter.

I think a third grader must have proof read this book. A he suddenly turns into a she and wrong words are very frequently used in the context of sentences. I'd find myself all of a sudden not knowing what was going on. I'd eventually figure out that it wasn't happening at all but was actually only some weird thoughts the character was having. All this made for a very confusing read. I will not read the next book about Legace.

Interesting novel. Intricately woven tale. While words were spelled correctly, proofreading was lacking. The story contained many extra "the's" as well as many words corrected by a spell checker that became inappropriate. For instance, "messaging" was used when "massaging" was appropriate. However, I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Very involved story with complicated characters. The story could easily have descended into XXX rating, but artfully crafted to leave enough to the imagination to avoid the feeling that a true pornographic novel would evoke. Hard to put down escapist fiction!

I am still reading this book, but I must comment on the absolutely awful copyediting job done on this book. I would suggest to the author that he use another publishing house.
While the plot and the characters are engaging, the book is difficult to read because of confusion in sentence structure (use of commas is ridiculous), change of gender (is it she or he?), etc etc. I am trying to continue reading, again only because of the plot and what (I gather) is good writing. I do not fault the author, because once out of the author's hands, it is up to the publisher to make sure that copyediting and proofreading are letter perfect.

I literally could not put my nook down when i was reading this book! I was so captivated by the characters and the plot and i NEEDED to know how it ended. I was hopelessly hooked :)
The author has a great sense of writing and humor, however, i wish he would have someone read over the grammar. I'm a teacher, i can't help myself from correcting all the mistakes silently in my head!
Despite the grammar hang ups, i loved this book and can't wait to read another of his.
Two thumbs up!

This was the first book I read on my nook and it was fairly interesting. It did keep my attention for the most part but towards the end, it started to lose most of my interest until they were reunited. It sort of reminded me of some NCIS!

This book would be a 5-star for me if the errors are corrected. There were too many mistakes of added or missing words. Not so much punctuation and spelling, those were fine. The story was very interesting. The descriptions are great and original. Some more editing is needed but all in all it is an original novel with vivid detail.

Overview
Martin Legacy was a top field interrogator before his life was shattered by a random crime. He withdrew to a basement post in the FBI, developing a mythic reputation as a brilliant malcontent. An agent brings him an active case. An abduction ring is preying on women, using them in adult films, ransomed for the price of pornography. They just took the daughter of an old friend, the head of the FBI.
