Overview

After Bourne is ambushed and nearly killed while in Indonesia, he fakes his death to take on a new identity and mission- to find out who is trying to assassinate him. In the process, Bourne begins to question who he really is and what he would become if he no longer carried the Bourne identity. Across the globe, an American passenger airliner is shot down over Egypt-apparently by an Iranian missile-leaving the world wondering if it was an accident or an act of aggression. A massive global team lead by Soraya Moore is assembled to investigate the attack before the situation escalates.
When Bourne's search for his would-be assassin intersects with Soraya's search for the group behind the airplane bombing, Bourne is thrust into a race to prevent a new world war. But it may already be too late.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Jason Bourne and arch villain assassin Leonid Arkadin continue their globe-trotting dance of near death in this standalone sequel to The Bourne Deception (9780446539821). As close call follows close call, another danger arises: A secret group vying for power wants one of Jason Bourne's rings and they seem quite willing to sacrifice his life to get it. Fast-paced action thriller.

Publishers Weekly
Lustbader's cookie-cutter fifth Jason Bourne novel in the Ludlum franchise (after The Bourne Deception) downgrades the title character to a mere co-star with villain Leonid Arkadin, a graduate of the same covert training program, who also possesses almost superhuman combat skills. Bourne and Arkadin's globe-trotting pursuit of each other drives the main plot, which includes yet another secret cabal bent on world domination, Severus Domna. The members of Severus Domna have their eye on a ring Bourne possesses that's a clue to the location of King Solomon's legendary gold. Arkadin's use of silly aliases (e.g., Stanley Kowalski, Frank N. Stein) dissipates any effort at realism, while implausible and formulaic side stories involving Soraya Moore, ousted from her position with the CIA, don't help. Those who don't mind Bourne's devolution from the tortured amnesiac soul Ludlum created into a stock action hero will be most satisfied. (June)
Library Journal
No one is what he or she seems to be. Lustbader's fifth installment (after The Bourne Deception) of Ludlum's saga of rogue agent Jason Bourne finds Bourne in possession of a ring with a cryptic engraving. Bourne, a product of the newly reformed ruthless and clandestine American Central Intelligence program called Treadstone, is still being hunted by his former employer. Treadstone is anxious to capture Bourne and Russian Leonid Arkadin, two of their top lethal graduates, to find out where their training went wrong. If that fails they want to manipulate the killer-with-a-conscience Bourne and the unscrupulous Arkadin into destroying each other. As Bourne works to put the shattered pieces of his memories back together, he doesn't know whom or what to trust. And time is running short for Bourne as various parties work to gain control over the ring, a key to unimaginable wealth, and terminate the indestructible Bourne. VERDICT Thriller addicts who love intricate webs of conspiracy mixed with an adrenalin rush of action and global adventure will snap this one up. I Also Recommend:

    The Bourne Objective

Having read the last two books featuring Bourne's "evil twin" Leonid Arkadin, I expected a nice end to the explosive trilogy...and I was not disappointed. A little hard to follow at first, the book picks up almost immediately. If you are a Bourne fan and do not mind that Mr. Lustbader has taken over the famous series, you will not be disappointed. I give it a 4/5, and excitedly wait for the presumed next novel, The Bourne Reality.

    fast-paced conspiracy thriller

The CIA creator of Treadstone hunts the two top graduates, American Jason Bourne and Russian Leonid Arkadin. The inventor needs to know first hand what failed in the fail safe Treadstone program so the error can be rectified and a new generation of super skilled cold killers can be created. Once the mission accomplished, Treadstone wants each to kill the other.

Bourne and Arkadin stalk one another even while the former gains possession of a ring coveted by a secret cabal, Severus Domna, who believe the jewelry leads to King Solomon's gold; a major step for their achieving their goal of world control. Meanwhile Bourne continues his personal hunt to learn who he was while Treadstone, Servus Domna and Arkadin focus on his death.

Although at times inane, readers will enjoy this fast-paced conspiracy thriller as two major webs converge on Bourne as well as Arkadin. Loaded with action, fans will anticipate a showdown between the two Treadstone grads as each understands the world has room for only one and if their "mentor and the cabal have their way: none.

    Bourne STILL Has Amnesia??

I think I read the first of these books in the late 1970s...you'd think he'd be cured by now!! While I loved books one through three, this effort is even worse than # 7 in the series as it has too many characters, too many subplots and too many plot twists. After a while you need a roadmap to keep track of who is doing what to whom. I expect in # 9 that we'll learn that Mitch Rapp is Jason Bourne's love child!!

    The Reader's Objective

The reader's objective is to get to know the characters and learn to follow along with the plot. In the beginning of this novel, there are way too many characters thrown at us. Some of them are just now being remembered by Jason Bourne. We switch back and forth to different groups of people, as well as back in time. So it makes for a tough start to the book, which ultimately proves to contain little new in the plot department.
