"I don't want kindness—or your kind of woman."
Sterling McCallum gave the plain, hard warning to Jessica Larson. The brooding rogue cop had a stone in place of a heart and a past as mysterious as the case that had brought them together. But this time Jessica couldn't back off. Something compelled her to stand her ground and brave the emotions this man had long aroused. Suddenly, their darkest secrets, their deepest desires, shimmered to the surface…about to explode.
However, unlike what the advertisement says, this is not a new book. Everytime a new Diana Palmer book comes out, I check my collection. This was previously published in 1994, under Silhouette. If you do not own many Diana Palmer, or if you don't own this one, I highly recommend it. However, if you're like me, and have a good collection going, I would check it first, to make sure you don't already have this "new" book. It should also, in fact, say Montana Mavericks.

Overall, this book was a nice quick read. I liked McCallum's character alot while I thought Jessica's character was so-so. This is the perfect book to spend reading on the porch one afternoon. No bad for my first Diana Palmer book.

I really enjoyed this book. These characters have "issues", I find that the characters can be a little over the top. This was not the case for these characters. The storyline was different aswell so that was nice to read.

I enjoy a good read, and this latest Diana Palmer offering is no exception. The characters are charming and the storyline intriguing. Great for a snow day.

I have to confess I was late to a party because I just didn't want to put it down long enough to get ready to leave. It has wonderfully rich characters, great banter and humor, and a lot of emotion. We find out right off that McCallum is a live wire type of reluctant hero. I find his type endearing. That tough man with a battered heart who needs love to thaw him out. Enter the sweet, shy Jessica. A woman w/a strong work ethic and a huge heart. Our hero has trouble pushing that kind of warmth away. Kindness can soften even the hardest hearts. It's wonderful just following along as they fall in love, rough patches and all. Sad pasts, buried pain, these two are drawn to each other and yet they fight it. I liked the constant twists and deepening plot. We see what kind of pain and chaos a hateful person can inflict in a relationship, wondering if it can survive it. Then you have a life threatening event that turns it all around. Plus, that ever important happy ending. Amazing book.
