Children's Literature
Abigail and her three friends, Jacob, Zach, and Bo, are bored with a cartography project their teacher, Mr. Caruthers ("Mr. C"), is making them do after school. But things get much more exciting when Mr. C turns the assignment into a time travel adventure using a computer he invented in order to save history from losing many of its prominent figures (this premise is not particularly well explained, however). With a mysterious envelope in hand, the kids join Sacagawea, the Native American translator and guide for Lewis and Clark, and help her discover her "dream." The social studies content in this chapter book is meaty and interesting, but the fictional element is not especially engaging. Though the narrative is in first person, from the perspective of Abigail, the voice just doesn't come across as natural and kid-like. And, with four kids on the adventure, there is always a sense that too many main characters are being juggled. The full-page, black and white illustrations—one for each chapter, approximately—are nicely done. Very unfortunately, though, the reproduction of Lewis and Clark's map is nearly impossible to see. "A Letter to Readers" at the end of the book summarizes the history and concepts presented. Some other stories in this "Blast to the Past" series have taken on Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney, Alexander Graham Bell, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

    This is a great book

    This book is very good, the best Blast to the Past yet. A new character is introduced and it's makes me want to read the next books even more.
