Sixteen short stories of horror and humor, thrills and chills, bizarro and noir, action and agony. Feel the flames licking at your heart as you venture into the Savage Fire.
Recovering from a nasty bite, Kate finds it impossible to control her growing passions in "An Island Never Cries."

Recovering from a nasty bite, Kate finds it impossible to control her growing passions in "An Island Never Cries."
A house shows a marked preference for one sibling, and the other better watch out in "Saving Grace."
Germs and nosy neighbors worry the eccentric Ned, but he doesn't let them keep him from a deadly task in "Worth Watching."
Pamela wakes up dead, but she doesn't let that stop her in "Unfinished Business".
Alchemy and Victorian-age zombies collide in a fiery tale of arrogance and despair in "Savage Fire."
These and eleven other stories of horror, bizarreness and irony light the Savage Fire.
Sixteen short stories, all of them different from each other except that most are ironic or dark. My favorite is one called "Worth Watching", because of its central character. No spoilers in this review, but let's say the story contains an unexpected, fun twist. Solid work on the Victorian dialects in the opening tale, "Savage Fire", and weird, beautiful prose poetry elsewhere in the book. The inclusion of an old-fashioned, hard-boiled detective short story was a pleasant surprise. Worth buying.
Patrick D'Orazio
The best way I can describe this portfolio of short tales is to say that it is an eclectic blend of genres, themes, and ideas. Don't expect to be granted a full explanation of some of the stories. You will be required to come up with your idea of any meaning that can be interpreted from some of them, while others are written in a more traditional manner than makes the purpose of the author more clear. Being challenged is a good thing here, with stories that maybe don't go down a straight path.
Ben's sense of setting, mood and dialogue are dead-on (an intended pun), and each story had me appreciating Ben's skill when it comes to putting words to paper.
It's hard to pick a favorite, as each story has a twist or angle that made me think or laugh at the setting or situation. If Not Mistaken definitely ranked high, as the cases of mistaken identities, graphic deaths, and uninhibited actions left me wondering if it could get any more bizarre... and then it did... repeatedly.
