More About This Book

Overview

Love the vintage- not the ghosts

Lily Ivory feels that she can finally fit in somewhere and conceal her "witchiness" in San Francisco. It's there that she opens her vintage clothing shop, outfitting customers both spiritually and stylistically.

Just when things seem normal, a client is murdered and children start disappearing from the Bay Area. Lily has a good idea that some bad phantoms are behind it. Can she keep her identity secret, or will her witchy ways be forced out of the closet as she attempts to stop the phantom?

    Definitively Bewitching!

I picked this up on vacation because I could not find the next installment of the series I was currently reading and have fallen under Juliet Blackwell's spell. The book was very well writen, entertaining and for anyone who is a fan of this genre, magical mysteries, you will not be disappointed. Great surprise, I cannot wait for the next installment.

    Ok read

This is an ok book if you're looking for something light to read. I felt it was dragging in places at time when I really just wanted her to get to solving the case of the missing little girl. I'm willing to give the 2nd book in the series a try.

    Loved this book!

Juliet Blackwell delivers a fun mystery full of interesting characters and a good story line. The book gives the reader enough information to want to continue reading the next in the series. Really, what's not to like in a book that has ghosts, witches and paranormal activity?!

I am happy to find a new author that is exciting, funny, and riviting! Juliet Blackwell set the perfect mood using the setting of a vintage clothing shop I'd love to explore myself!. The characters were well developed and believeable! the story was suspenseful enough to cause a tingle or two up my spine. Can't wait to read her next book!

    Loved it!

I'm not really into witches and stories about them but I am so happy I tried this series. I loved this book so much the next day I got the second in the series. This book is well written and all the characters are well developed. I loved that the mystery isn't easily figured out while not being overly confusing. This book is a great read and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

    Bridget's Review

Secondhand Spirits is a fun murder-mystery that captures a readers attention instantly. Juliet's writing technique is addictive and her ability to tell an entertaining tale is amazing. I had a lot of fun befriending Lily and helping her solve the mysterious disappearances. Five stars!

    Great Magical Mystery

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book because I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment of a series that I have been reading and had myself convinced this would just be a filler. I was wrong. I loved the story, the detail, the technical information. Was a little put off by the character at first, then grew to like her. The author provides a lot of cultural details which I'm sure if related to her career as an anthropologist. Half way through the book, I jumped in my car and went back to the bookstore to get the next book in the series. I remembered there was only one on the shelf and didn't want miss out.

    Vintage Clothing and Witchcraft

Lily Ivory is a witch who owns a vintage clothing store in the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco. Up until recently she has been rootless, traveling all over the world, looking for a place where she could feel at home. In the past, her powers have scared people; she had to leave the town where she grew up before she was out of high school. But San Francisco seems like a good fit for her, and selling old clothing, with their subtle happy vibrations from their previous owners, makes her content. She shares her shop with middle-aged Wiccan herbalist Bronwyn. The difference between "Wiccan" and "witch" is clearly shown without making the Wiccans seem like wannabes.

Right at the beginning of the story, Aidan Rhodes, a local male witch (not a warlock - that means "oath breaker"), gives Lily a housewarming present: a familiar, a goblin who can shape-shift into a Vietnamese potbellied pig. She isn't sure she wants this gift, but Aidan leaves before she can express her feelings. She names him Oscar.

Lily's assistant Maya, an art student who is doing an oral history project on the side, visits a lot of elderly people for their stories and incidentally manages to turn up some great vintage clothing. She brings Lily to meet an elderly woman, Frances Potts, who has a houseful of carefully preserved old clothes. While they are looking at the clothing, they hear a terrible wailing: "Where are my children?" Maya doesn't hear it. Lily is convinced that the fact that Frances did hear it means she, Frances, is about to die. Then they hear shouts: a neighbor's child, Jessica, has been kidnapped. They think she was snatched by the evil spirit La Llorona, the Weeping Woman, who in life had drowned all of her children and is believed to steal children who are out alone at night. Many years ago, one of Frances' daughters had disappeared. Lily is worried about Frances. Later that evening she goes back to the house and does a spell to keep Frances safe, but it doesn't work, and in the morning Frances is dead.

Well, Frances was a lot more than she appeared, as we learn over the course of the book. Lily, Maya, Bronwyn and Bronwyn's coven - and, of course, Oscar - are drawn into the mystery of La Llorona.

I really enjoyed this book. It was well-written, and the characters come alive for me. It's easy to believe that San Francisco can be magickal, as anybody who's been there will know. I can't wait to read more of Lily's adventures.

Hope Ms. Blackwell plans on keep this series up!

Nice to find something that fits the "cozy mystery" genre, but is still filled with fresh and unique ideas. Looking forward to seeing when the next book (fingers crossed) will be available.
