Overview

If you could speak to the dead, anyone at all, who would it be?

When Jeni asked this question, Shada Emery figured it was a joke. So both she and Willow joined in the fun, naming their favorite dead celebrities.

And then there was Ember Cole.

Ember wants one more talk with her Grandpa Normie, whose death a year ago began a year of tragedy. So when Jeni suggests a camping trip into the dense woods of northwestern Wisconsin to hold a seance, Shada and Willow put off their misgivings and agree for the sake of their friend.

Ember hopes to find the answers she seeks among the dead. But sometimes the dead have their own agenda.

SHADA is Book 1 of the Ember Cole series. A young adult paranormal suspense novella, it runs about 32,500 words or 125 pages in length.

Early Praise for SHADA:

"This is a great book … I enjoyed SHADA very much. It's got that spine tingling fun while drawing you into the characters and their lives." —Victorine E. Lieske, NYT bestselling author of NOT WHAT SHE SEEMS and the OVERTAKING series

"SHADA drew me in, left me wanting more, and made me a little afraid to go outside after dark." —T.L. Haddix, author of SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS, UNDER THE MOON'S SHADOW and SHADOWS FROM THE GRAVE

Editorial Reviews

ReaderGirls.com (Meg, Caitlin, and Laurie T.)
Shada was an absorbing read about friendship, letting our friends make decisions for us and then having to deal with the fallout. Shada and her three friends--the strong-willed Jeni, the melancholy Ember, and science nerd Willow--are close and Jeni invites them to a sleepover in the woods for a seance ... Holding a seance on ancient burial grounds was incredibly spooky and Craig Hansen skillfully crafted these chilly scenes.

Meet the Author

Craig Hansen wrote stories from an early age, but when his SF short story, "The S.S. Nova," was published in the Minnesota Writers In the School COMPAS program's 1981 anthology of student writing, When It Grows Up, You Say Goodbye To It, he decided to dedicate himself to writing. Several unpublished novels and short stories followed.

Hansen earned two degrees at Minnesota State University at Mankato under the mentorship of young adult novelist Terry Davis. In the years that followed, Hansen worked a variety of jobs related to writing, including editorial work at a small publishing house, holding a position as a website editor, and five years in journalism in northwestern Wisconsin, where he earned several state awards for his writing and editing.

His work has appeared in the Meadowbrook Press anthology, Girls to the Rescue, Book 1, as well as the true crime journal, Ripper Notes, in volume 28.

His first novel, Most Likely, was released in May. Shada is the first installment of the Ember Cole series of young adult paranormal suspense books. Hansen is hard at work on the next installment in the series, the novel-length book, Ember.

Hansen recently moved to Oregon with his wife, a dog, a cat, and his 89-year-old father, a World War II veteran.

Craig's interests include the music of Johnny Cash, reading the novels of other independent authors, blogging, and the study of Messianic theology. On his website (craig-hansen.com), you can sign up to receive a periodic email newsletter that will notify you when he releases new novels.

    Sam

*he materializes, holding his staff in one hand and a glass globe filled with shadows in the other.
Smashing the globe down, he levitates out of reach as darkness spreads from the shattered glass, flowing across the ground like smoke. Wood crackle as it turns black, and the greens of the grass, leaves, amd bushes wither to the ground, turning black.
He taps an untouched tree, disintegrating it into darkness. Waving his staff, the darkness swirls around him, spinning faster and faster. When the darkness slows and drifts to the ground, he is gone.*
