Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

Chapter One

Leaves brushed Jaykit's pelt like falling snow. More crackled underpaw, stiff with frost and so deep that he struggled with every step. An icy wind pierced his fur—still nursery soft—and made him shiver.

"Wait for me!" he wailed. He could hear his mother's voice ahead, her warm body always a few steps out of reach.

"You'll never catch it!"

A high-pitched mew sliced into his dream, and Jaykit woke with a start. He pricked his ears, listening to the familiar sounds of the bramble nursery. His sister and brother scrabbling in play. Ferncloud lapping her dozing kits. There was no snow now; he was in the camp, safe and warm. He could smell his mother's nest, empty but still fresh with her scent.

"Oof!" He let out a gasp of surprise as his sister, Hollykit, landed heavily on top of him. "Watch out!"

"You're awake at last!" She rolled off him and pushed her hind paws into his flank. With a leap, she twisted away and grasped for something just out of reach.

Mouse! Jaykit could smell it. His brother and sister must be playing catch with fresh-kill newly brought into camp. He sprang to his paws and gave a quick stretch that sent a shiver through his small body.

"Catch this, Jaykit!" Hollykit mewed. The mouse whistled past his ear.

"Slow slug!" she teased as he turned too late to grab it.

"I've got it!" Lionkit called. He pounced on the fresh-kill, his paws thudding on the nursery's packed earth floor.

Jaykit wasn't going to let his brother steal the prize from him so easily. He might be thesmallest in the litter, but he was fast. He leaped toward Lionkit, knocking him out of the way and stretching his forepaw to reach for the mouse.

He landed in a clumsy skid and rolled over, feeling a jolt of alarm as he realized it wasn't moss underneath him, but the squirming warmth of Ferncloud's two tiny kits. Ferncloud gave him a shove, pushing him away with her hind paws.

Jaykit gasped. "Have I hurt them?"

"Of course not," Ferncloud snapped. "You're too small to squash a flea!" Foxkit and Icekit mewled as she tucked them closer into her belly. "But you three are getting too rough for the nursery!"

"Sorry, Ferncloud," Hollykit mewed.

"Sorry," Jaykit echoed, apologetic even though Ferncloud's comment on his size had stung him. At least the queen's anger would not last. She would easily forgive kits she had suckled—when Squirrelflight's milk had not come, it was Ferncloud who had fed Jaykit, Hollykit, and Lionkit in the moons before Foxkit and Icekit were born.

"It's about time Firestar made you apprentices and moved you to the apprentice den," Ferncloud meowed.

"If only." Lionkit sighed.

"It won't be long," Hollykit pointed out. "We're almost six moons old."

Jaykit felt the familiar surge of excitement as he imagined becoming an apprentice warrior. He couldn't wait to begin his training. But without even seeing Ferncloud's face, he could sense the flicker of doubt that prickled through the queen's pelt and knew that she was looking at him with pity in her eyes. His fur bristled with frustration—he was just as ready to become an apprentice as Hollykit and Lionkit!

Ferncloud answered Hollykit, unaware that Jaykit had sensed her moment of unease. "Well, you're not six moons yet! And until you are, you can do your playing outside!" she ordered.

"Yes, Ferncloud," Lionkit replied meekly.

"Come on, Jaykit," Hollykit called. "Bring the mouse with you." The branches of the bramble bush rustled as she slid out through the nursery entrance.

Jaykit picked up the mouse delicately in his teeth. It was newly killed and soft, and he didn't want to make it bleed—they could have a good, clean game with it yet. With Lionkit close behind him, he scrabbled out after his sister. The barbs of the entrance tunnel clawed satisfyingly at his fur, sharp enough to tug at his pelt but not so sharp that they hurt.

Outside, the air smelled crisp and frosty. Firestar was sharing tongues with Sandstorm below Highledge. Dustpelt sat with them.

"We should be thinking about expanding the warriors' den," the dark tabby advised his leader. "It's crowded already, and Daisy and Sorreltail's kits won't be apprentices forever."

Nor will we! thought Jaykit.

Brightheart and Cloudtail were grooming each other in a pool of sunlight on the other side of the clearing. Jaykit could hear the steady lapping of their tongues like water dripping from a rain-soaked leaf. Like all the ThunderClan cats, their pelts were leaf-bare thick, but the muscles beneath had grown lean with scarce prey and hard hunting.

Hunger was not the only hardship leaf-bare had brought. Molepaw, one of Sorreltail's kits, had died of a cough that had not responded to Leafpool's herbs, and Rainwhisker had been killed during a storm, struck by a falling branch.

Brightheart paused from her washing. "How are you today, Jaykit?"

Jaykit placed the mouse between his paws, safe from Hollykit's grasp. "I'm fine, of course," he meowed. Why did Brightheart have to make such a fuss over him? He'd only been sleeping in the nursery, not out raiding ShadowClan territory! It was like she was always keeping her one good eye on him. Eager to prove he was just as strong as his brother and sister, Jaykit flung the mouse high over Hollykit's head.

As Lionkit thundered past him and grappled with Hollykit to be the first to catch it, Squirrelflight's voice sounded from the side of the nursery. "You should show more respect for your prey!" Their mother was busy pressing leaves into gaps in the prickly walls that surrounded the queens' den.

Daisy was helping her. "Kits will be kits," the white she-cat purred indulgently.

Jaykit's nostrils flared at Daisy's strange scent. It was different from the Clanborn cats', and some of the warriors still referred to her as a kittypet because she had once lived in the horseplace and eaten Twoleg food. Daisy wasn't a warrior, because she showed no sign that she ever wished to leave the nursery, but her kits Mousepaw, Hazelpaw, and Berrypaw were apprentices, and it seemed to Jaykit that they were as Clanborn as any of his Clanmates.

    Let's just get this strait. I love Warriors, and I thought Erin Hunter did a magnificent job with this book. Just to answer questions first of all, I just read a comment that gave away a very important death! GRR! And it gave away there name's too! AH! I just spolied the whole series for myself, but there is some stuff that i know itsn't being given away!!! YAY! i just wanted to say thank you Erin Hunter for bringing Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw into the wonderful and amazing world of Warriors. <33 I can't dewscribe my love for this series. =] if i did i wouldnt be able to type ittttt.

    Awesome!

    I loved this book alot! Erin Hunter, writing books as good as ever! Loved it! :) I can't wait to read the next book in the series! Best book ever!

    Awesome book, but . . . . .

    Jello again everyone. This is Brook Where Small Fish Swim, again, I want to say that when i first started reading the series, this book had just came out. So now I feel bad because you all had to wait to read this book, but it was already out when I read it! So I want to apologize for that. So I pretty much read this book, amazed by it all, and then kept rereading it until dark river came out! But, At the time I didnt know about the LeafCrowJay theory. Once i learned about it, it got me thinking . . . . Hmmm . . . . Maybe this theory is real . . . . . But, I geuss we all have our own thoughts about it! yes, I do think that the kits are a bit bratty at times, but I think they get that from their mother Squirrelflight, if she is their mother that is, anyways, and if not Jaypaw probably gets it from Crowfeather. It was a good book, but Ive noticed something_ The first series is too worriedly, the second series is way dramatic, thats my favorate series, and the third series is too kittish. Thats all I have to say. And I think that Berrypaws warriors name will be Berrynose, and Hazelpaws name will be Hazeltail, and Mousepaws name will be Mousewhisker. I geussed all that, just so you know. and . . . . . happy Hunting! May Starclan, or er Tribe of Endless hunting be with you!

    Warriors Series is GREAT!

    This series is great - especially if you are a cat lover like me. BUT, don't start reading with this one. You have GOT to start with the very first book in series 1 where Rusty gets re-named. Start there and read through all 6 then go on to the 2nd series of 6 and then the third. Each book entertwines with the next and if you do not start at book 1 you will not get the whole WONDERFUL story of the cats in these clans.

    I started reading these over the past summer, and am now waiting for my mom to take me to the bookstore to buy Dark River. This book was excellent, and kept the spirit of the original Warriors series.

    Not enough action for a 5

    This book is probably one of the only warriors books that I would not rate as a five. The only reason for this is because, as I stated in the title, there was not enough action. The overall plot was belivable, and I liked that we can have the story from three perspectives instead of two (Stormfur or Brambleclaw or Squirrelpaw/flight and Leafpaw/pool) or one (Firepaw/heart/star). This lets us as the readers see Jaypaw, Lionpaw, and Hollypaw's different opinions. I dissagree that Squirrelpaw/flight's personality changed too much. She was just growing up steadily. Last but not least, I expect a great series from Erin Hunter, and many more to come.

    Three Stars, Three cats, DUH!

    I think that the three stars represent the three cats. (HollyPaw JayPaw and LionPaw) ok if you've read the last book of the new prophesy (Sunset) you shpuld remember the part where BlueStar LionHeart and YellowFang came in a dream to LeafPool, i think those three cats are being reborn in the three apprentices i think LionHeart will be reborn in LionPaw, i think BlueStar will be reborn in JayPaw and i think that YellowFang will be reborn in HollyPaw. this is just in idea. i honestly dont know where you guys got the idea that BirchPaw was evil or that he was going to fall in love with a ShadowClan cat. i like BirchPaw and i think he is completly loyal! i am not sure about AshFur though..... he could be evil or good! but i cant believe he would question LeafPools dream! i really want to see what TigerStar is planing now! i dont think that MothWing with ever find StarClan. i think the reason Brook and StormFur left the tribe was because they have a new leader.i wish that erin hunter would just stick to the main story and not write like FireStars quest and the Lost Warrior and stuff, dont get me wrong i LOVE the Warriors Series and i love erin hunter! i think Daisy will end up leaving once her kits are apprenticed and will go back to the horseplace. i think GrayStripe will come back and become deputy. i dont think SquirellFlight and LeafPool will argue. and i think WindClan will stay good! i think MistyFoot will become leader of RiverClan but BlackStar will continue to rule ShadowClan. ok this are all just ideas! my favorite cats are SilverStream, BrightHeart, GoldenFlower, BrackenFur, GrayStripe, CloudTail, LongTail, FeatherTail, StormFur, LeafPool, TawnyPelt, LionHeart, MistyFoot and DustPelt. i think BrambleClaw is to much of a goodie two shoes and SquirelFlight is to bratty and FireStar is to wise. shoot me! ok well thats all i have to say! WARRIORS ROCK!

    I love Warriors!!!!

    I love Warriors! . I started reading 'Into the Wild' the second month of 6th grade and about 4 months later i was finishing Sunset. I can't wait for The Sight to come out!
