From the ABCs and the “1-2-3s” to full sentences, this fun guide, illustrated with photos of children signing, teaches youngsters all the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). They’ll start with the alphabet and counting, and move on to vocabulary for family, pets, and the home; things at school; days of the week; colors; favorite foods; sports and hobbies; and much more. Often, a sentence accompanies the sign, so that kids can grasp the use of verbs and other parts of ASL grammar. There are even explanations of how to change a statement into a question just by changing your facial expression. Now, even hearing kids can communicate easily with deaf friends or family members and have secret conversations whenever they want.

Color photos illustrate sign language for numbers, letters, colors, feelings, animals, and clothes.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sign language is becoming a popular second language, not only to talk with the deaf, but to share secret conversations with friends or to communicate in a noisy place. Vocabulary is depicted in colorful, clear pictures of five different children demonstrating the signs and is arranged by topics such as family, school, animals, foods, feelings, and sports. Each picture includes a caption describing how to make the sign. Some give hints to help you remember the motion such as the sign for bicycle looks like you are pedaling a bike or the sign for understand looks like a light bulb is going off in your mind. The introduction includes a short history of American Sign Language and explains that the language originated in France and that there is a university specifically for the deaf in Washington D.C. The ending chapters deal with practical words, questions, and sentence structure. Words can easily be found using the index at the back of the book, the table of contents or browsing through the topics. This book is a helpful adjunct for anyone (not just kids) who wants to learn sign language. 2004, Sterling Publishing Co, Ages 4 up.

    Best Christmas Present!

This book was the best present under my tree. As a 1st grade teacher with a deaf child mainstreamed into my class, I was determined that the students and I would not rely 100% on the interpreter. This book has been a godsend! My students love it too.

Highly Recommended for beginning signers of all ages

I am Hard of Hearing and a Sign Language interpreter in the school system, grades K~12. This book has excellent pictures and descriptions of how to learn some basic sign vocab. It is also very accurate to the signs used daily by Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. Some of the school libraries in our system have several of these books, as we encourage hearing children to learn some vocab and interact with our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

I think this is one of the best books available to begin sign language. It gives clear images of the sign, as well as any motion that accompanies the sign.

I have used this book in Early Childhood Classes to help teach preschool teachers some basic signs to use with young children. Children can sign before they can verbalize their wants and needs. Parents and teachers can open communication early with hearing and non-hearing children.

I gave this book to my 10 year old grand-daughter as a birthday gift. She helps with the handicapped children in her classroom, and is proud that she can sign with them. This is an excellent resource for her.

    OUTSTANDING!

I just got this book as a birthday gift from a friend of mine because I am taking ASL in college. I'm going to get another one to send to my best friend from home who is also learning. It's a spectacular book, no comparison.

    learning to sign with kids

This is an excellant book for parents to use as a tool to teach themselves & their children to sign some simple signs. I am a grandparent & used this book to help with my grandchildren when they were babies. They still continue to use some of them now that they are older.

    The Perfect Book

All our schools, k-6th grade, will be using this book as a text/guide for learning sign language. Our classes are all mainstreamed with students who are deaf, hearing, motor impaired, and more. The book is just great for students, parents, teachers, and administrators--the vocab, layout, and info included are excellent.

    A Great Book

This book is easy and fun to read; bright and colorful. If I forget a sign I can easily look it up. Young people will love to use it to learn a secret language.
