His best friend, Brad, is being scouted for Junior A, which will finally satisfy his ambitious hockey dad. Andy is on the verge of making his acting breakthrough. He's got an agent, and he's got an audition for the role that could launch his career -- the Punk. All he needs is someone who can show him the moves, teach him the hard stare. He turns to Shane, the kid who is so scary that even the teachers are afraid of him. Shane's in a gang, and he and his brother have ruled the street Andy thinks Shane can teach him how to be a convincing criminal.
But when Tommy suspects that Andy has been seeing his girlfriend, Brad goads him into a confrontation, and Shane comes to Andy's aid. And when the shells that the boys have constructed for themselves start to crumble, the situation turns toxic, and tragic.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Four high school seniors must deal with the loss of their dreams in this fierce, dramatic tale. Tommy is a top student who wants to join the air force and get away from his abusive mother. When his longtime girlfriend breaks up with him because he keeps everything bottled up, he becomes a "walking time bomb," ready to explode with jealousy. Brad, Tommy's best friend, has been pushed all his life by his father and coach to be a hockey star, only to be taken off the first line because of his violent style and replaced—by a girl. He takes revenge on her and the whole hockey rink, and in his rage at the world provokes Tommy into raping his ex-girlfriend in a jealous fit, acts that will change the future each boy had planned. Meanwhile, Andy dreams of being an actor, and has been getting callbacks for a role as a punk. He turns for lessons in acting like a punk to the much-feared former gang lord Shane, who, it turns out, loves literature and comes to Andy's rescue when Tommy and Brad beat him up. In the end, fatally cut by his former gang, Shane comes to Andy, who finally understands the consequences of a life of violence and discovers that real life isn't anything like his dream of playacting. Foon, a Canadian playwright and author, explains in his acknowledgements that the characters grew out of his 1994 play, War. He switches perspective effectively between the viewpoints of each of the four boys, achieving a vivid, violent exploration of what becoming a man is all about as each strives to achieve his goals and, in the case of Tommy and Brad, gives in to destructive and self-destructive behavior. The characters are memorable, and their tragic story is gripping. KLIATT Codes: S—Recommendedfor senior high school students. 2003, Publishers Group West, Groundwood, 172p.,

Gr 9 Up-When seniors Brad and Tommy suspect Andy of stealing Tommy's girlfriend, they decide to make him pay by beating him up and humiliating him. Unfortunately for them, Shane, a notorious gang member, shows up and claims to be Andy's backup. This unlikely pair forms a tenuous friendship when Shane agrees to help Andy "punk up" for an acting part. Brad runs into subsequent trouble on the hockey team and Tommy, an honor student and school hero, is arrested for raping his former girlfriend. Foon has created this novel from a play he wrote in 1994 by expanding each character's part and alternating chapters among the teens. Readers will respond to the brutality and intensity felt throughout these story threads, and the bully theme rings loud and clear with anyone who has set foot in a high school. The book's small trim size and eye-catching cover should make it an easy sell to reluctant readers.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
