Overview

Chloe needs a holiday. Her partner, Philip, has troubles at work, and the whole family wants a break. Hugh is not a happy man. His immaculate wife, Amanda, seems more interested in her new kitchen than in him—and he works so hard to pay for it, he barely has time for his children. Maybe he’ll have a chance to bond with them on holiday…

When the two families arrive at a villa in Spain for their respective vacations, they all get a shock—it has been double-booked. An uneasy week of sharing begins, and tensions mount in the soaring heat. But the temperature isn’t solely to blame: What no one else realizes is that Chloe and Hugh have a history—and that the “accidental” overlap might not have been so accidental after all…

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Wickham (The Gatecrasher; also, the Shopaholic series as Sophie Kinsella) spins a delightful story of British families forced to spend their vacation together after a mutual friend promises them the same week in his Spanish villa. Chloe Harding hopes that a holiday will soothe the strain between her and longtime partner Philip Murray, who is worried that a recent takeover of his company may cost him his job. Their hopes are dashed when they arrive and find another family already settled at the villa. To Chloe's disappointment, she'll be sharing the space with Hugh Stratton, the beau who broke her heart 15 years ago. Now married to high-maintenance Amanda and with two children, Hugh apologizes, and though Chloe initially expresses nothing but hurt and disdain (all the while keeping their past a secret from Philip), she eventually considers beginning life anew with Hugh. Wickham does a bangup job of creating believable characters-even Amanda is less vapid than she at first seems. Surprises abound as the plot unfolds, and the families begin to wonder whether their mutual friend made an innocent mistake in getting them together. (July)

Library Journal

Wickham is the pen name of Sophie Kinsella, author of the popular "Shopaholic" series. In Kinsella's latest novel written under that pen name (following Cocktails for Three and The Gatecrasher), Amanda and Hugh Stratton, their two daughters, and their free-spirited nanny, Jenna, fly to Spain to stay at a stunning villa belonging to Hugh's old schoolmate Gerard. At the same time, Chloe, a lively dressmaker, her partner, Philip, and the couple's two sons are taking a well-deserved break as Philip's company prepares for a merger that might mean the end of his career. When the two families arrive at the villa and realize they have been double-booked, they appear to be the victims of a scheduling error. As the story unfolds, however, it turns out there's much more to their shared history. The occasional sexual situations and references to drug use make this more of an adult read than the "Shopaholic" series, but this should not deter readers from picking up what is essentially a fun and charming read. Recommended for all public library collections. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 3/15/08; library marketing campaign planned.-Ed.]

Meet the Author

Sophie Kinsella
Sophie Kinsella

Madeleine Wickham is the author of several acclaimed novels, including A Desirable Residence, Cocktails for Three, and The Wedding Girl. As Sophie Kinsella, she has written a number of bestsellers including the Shopaholic series, Twenties Girl, Remember Me?, The Undomestic Goddess, and Can You Keep a Secret? Confessions of a Shopaholic was made into a major motion picture starring Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. Born in London, Wickham studied at New College, Oxford. She lives in London with her husband and family.

Biography

When we first meet Becky Bloomwood in Sophie Kinsella's Confessions of a Shopaholic, she's a financial journalist in London who's quickly realizing that though she may be a writer for Successful Saving magazine, she could use help practicing what she preaches. She's helplessly driving herself into debt buying things she can't afford, at one point rationalizing that buying something 30 percent off is actually saving money. Becky was a hit with readers and spawned a franchise for Kinsella. In subsequent books, readers have followed her through a temptingly whirlwind series of adventures, with her best friend, Suze, and Luke, the love of her life, often along for the ride.

The Shopaholic books are little tours of fabulousness, where objects are introduced not as incidental to the story but as key players. Becky may not attend to certain life details such as bills or space to store all of her purchases, but she knows how to pay proper homage to the details in a dress or a vintage cocktail table. When she packs for a trip, we get the list of what she's bringing. What's more, she rationalizes and justifies purchases before you can say, "Credit or cash?" (The answer for Becky, by the way, is usually credit.)

Those who value integrity or depth in their fictional characters would be well advised to steer clear of Becky; but Shopaholic fans identify with her weaknesses, finding her more sympathetic than sinister. She can be maddening in her lack of discipline or self-reflectiveness, but Kinsella has taken a cue from Jane Austen's Emma by infusing her character with enough optimism, heart, and generous spirit to overcome her faults. Becky always reassuringly lands right-side-up, making these books a fun flight of fancy.

The author has interspersed her popular series with a handful of stand-alone confections featuring protagonists as charming and deliciously funny as the Shopaholic. Fortunately for her many fans, Sophie Kinsella has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of affection for her characters. May it fuel many books to come!

Good To Know

Some outtakes from our interview with Kinsella:

"I am a serial house mover: I have moved house five times in the last eight years! But I'm hoping I might stay put in this latest one for a while."

"I've never written a children's book, but when people meet me for the first time and I say I write books, they invariably reply, 'Children's books?' Maybe it's something about my face. Or maybe they think I'm J. K. Rowling!"

"If my writing comes to a halt, I head to the shops: I find them very inspirational. And if I get into real trouble with my plot, I go out for a pizza with my husband. We order a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea and start talking -- and basically keep drinking and talking till we've figured the glitch out. Never fails!"

"Favorite leisure pursuits: a nice hot bath, watching The Simpsons, playing table tennis after dinner, shopping, playing the piano, sitting on the floor with my two small boys, and playing building blocks and Legos."

"Least favorite leisure pursuit: tidying away the building blocks and Legos."

"What's going on?" said Chloe to Philip. "Is this the right place?"

"It's the right place," said Philip, "but Gerard's cocked up the arrangements. Double-booked all of us. We're just going to phone him now. We won't be long."

"I see," said Chloe. "Well...OK."

There was silence as Philip and Amanda began to walk towards the villa, leaving Hugh still staring at Chloe's averted face. Only when they had disappeared through the door did she turn her head to meet his gaze. Hugh stared back, unable to speak, his heart thumping inside his chest. Rays of afternoon sun were falling through the trees, dappling shadows on her face, making her expression unreadable.

"Hello," she said at last.

"Hello," said Hugh, and cleared hus throat apprehensively. "It's...it's been a long time."

    Enjoyable

This is the second book that I have read from this author and I found it equally enjoyable. It was a fun summer read that kept me looking forward to the next chapter ahead.

    Sleeping Arrangements is just ok

It's nothing special. I really like her books and I was a bit disappointed in this one. It was hard for me to finish it. I really could have just stoppped reading half way through and not thought twice about it.
It just was kinda boring and dragged on. I just didn't care to find out what happend.
Look for something else to read.

    Fun Read!

This is a fun read that is great for the beach or rainy days. The characters are interesting and the plot is humorous and heart-warming at the same time. I was able to relate to the characters in the story. This book would make a great gift for girlfriends!

    ok but not her best

A little too predictable; seems like she couldn't decide between writing a mystery or a romance. I love this author but this wasn't one of her best.

    Don't Bother

I really like this author, but not this book. Frankly, I read it quickly, but only because I wanted to finish it, so I could read something better. The plot and characters were weak. Not worth the time invested.

    Not the best

I was really disappointed with this book. Usually I love books by Sophie Kinsella though she was writing under Madeline Wickham for this book. The characters were lacking. I didn't like them. None of them ever became characters I really care about. They all seemed shallow and full of self interest. The best characters were the kids of the "lovers" and they don't play that big a role. I think Madeline should stick with being Sophie.

    Ho Hum

I'm disappointed that I didn't like this book more, because I usually like the author's work (whichever name she writes under!) The characters weren't really likable and the renewed 'affair' was lame and unbelievable... after 15 years apart and a few creepy stares at each other across the room they succumb that easily? The only one I was amused by was the nanny, but she couldn't carry the whole book with her 'Jokes!'. Sorry - just didn't think this one was worth the time.

    WHORE-ible!!!!

Very, very disappointed. I loved SK's first Shopaholic book and her other stand-alone titles. This book made me nauseous. The plot revolved around every character justifying why it's okay to sleep around. The other reviewer mentioned "baby barfing" throughout the entire book...I couldn't have said it better myself.

This book had me baby barfing all the way through.

I enjoyed many of Sophie Kinsella's books. This book was an unbelievable disappointment for me....on so many levels. I COULD NOT believe the "heroin" justified an affair at all, let alone after a few stolen glances. The nanny would have been funny if she wasn't so disturbing. I'm not a prude when it comes to romantic comedy. But this was ridiculous and nauseating. Sorry.

    FUN AND LIGHT-HEARTED READ

Summer is here and this is a beach read type of book. Or as I call them-car books. I always keep a book like this in the car-I can read it in spurts while I am waiting to pick the kids up from school, stuck in traffic, need a few minutes to myself, etc. Put it down, pick it up two days later and you really don't lose continuity. For some reason, writing as Sophie Kinsella, the tone of the novel is frothier and more fun than when the author writes under Madeleine Wickham. I loved the SHOPAHOLIC series but some of her other books tend to be a bit dragged out. The storyline here is cute, not entirely unoriginal and has some aparks to it.

Easy Read with some good Qualities

I am a bug fan of Sophie Kinsella/Wickham. I loved the shopaholic series as well as Can you keep a Secret. Now, I enjoyed reading this book. It is a light read, easy to follow, and had some interesting occurences. The characters were fun, yet some of the situations such as Chloe and Hugh getting together and no one finding out about it, ticked me off a bit. These two characters got around their partners with a secret they had for 16 years, and its a bit unbelievable. I guuss thats why it is a story, but you feel like you want to knock the characters upside the head!

All in all its a cute book, some may love it, others may hate it. But if your looking for a cute beach read pick this one up!

I'd b*tch-slap all the main characters if I could.

I loved her Shopaholic series and looked forward to reading this. However, I was sadly disappointed with this one. The characters are mere caricatures and none likable. The book was just gratuitous whining, drunkenness, illicit sex, underage sex, and pot smoking. I'm not a prude, but instead of using any of this to drive character growth, it was simply background. And boring background at that.

It's a quick read if you don't want to engage your brain and are fine with extreme redundancy and false drama.

I do feel slightly guilty bagging on her like this, as I've always been a fan. I guess prolific writing will produce a bad result every now and again.

    Not my sort of book.

Grown woman appearing topless in front of an eight and a sixteen year old boy, pot smoking babysitter, adultery, teenage sex, gratuitous use of F-word. Somewhere in there was a story but I felt there were more gimmicks than a developed story. The story had potential but it had no substance to make it work well.

A serious disappointment since I had heard so many good things about the author.

    A little disappointing.

Two separate families are anxious to go on a holiday. Chloe and Philip are both frustrated with work. Chloe is a seamstress who is tired of squeezing women in dresses a size smaller than they really wear and a recent takeover in Philip¿s company has left him wondering if he will have a job in the near future.

Amanda and Hugh are going through a rough patch in their marriage. Philip is obsessed with work and spends so little time with his family that his children barely even know him and Amanda is currently stressing the redecoration of their home.

When both families receive an invitation to their friend Gerard¿s villa they each look forward to a restful week in Spain. What they find out when they arrive is that Gerard has accidentally double booked his villa and they end up having to share it as every hotel in the area is fully booked.

To make matters worse Chloe and Hugh were once a couple whose relationship ended badly and their respective spouses have no knowledge of the past relationship. Faced with the shared sleeping arrangements stress mounts between the couples and soon all the adults are fighting between themselves and Chloe and Hugh are drawn to each other again.

Overall I thought the book was an okay read but I was a little disappointed in it. I love Wickham¿s writing as Sophie Kinsella in the Shopaholic series and really enjoyed The Wedding Girl by her but Sleeping Arrangements was a let down. The characters were not as likeable as characters in her other books. Hugh is a major jerk throughout the whole book, Philip¿s lack of a backbone was annoying, Amanda is too uptight and Chloe was just not likeable. The only bright spot in the book was the nanny, Jenna. She had a weird sense of humor and always made the scenes she was in surprising. I¿m really on the fence about recommending this one so I¿ll say read it if it¿s readily available but I don¿t recommend searching it out.

    she did it again

Another great book by the same author of the Shopaholic series Sophie Kinsella. this new book sleeping arrangements by Madeleine Wickham is outstanding, and funny. The ending was the only thing I wish she would have elavorated alittle more on. I wish Gerard would have come to the Villa and discovered that they all inspite him they got along. Great novel. now I'm reading cocktails for three and its great.

    Wonderful

I think this is the best novel M. Wickham has written under her actual name. While Sleeping Arrangements does not beat her work under Sophie Kinsella, it certainly beats out her other books. I finished it in a day, it was cute.
