Overview

Hailed as "impossible to put down," the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies-the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that's what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn't as confident.

Sophie's bound for one hell of a ride-can she get her powers back before it's too late?

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Debbie Wenk
Sixteen-year-old Sophie Mercer has traveled by Itineris (a magic portal) from her recently burnt-to-the-ground boarding school and landed in a forest, feeling much the worse for wear. Before she gets her bearings, she is confronted by a ghost (who is tethered to her and not happy about it), a werewolf, and a very angry, young Brannick (a family of women with special powers—the family that Sophie is actually seeking). Once inside the Brannick compound, Sophie is reunited with her mother, whom she discovers is a Brannick—a family that Sophie thought were her mortal enemies. The Brannicks have been greatly reduced in number; they are down to four and a half, the half being Sophie, as her father is a demon. It turns out the Brannicks had been searching for Sophie as their only hope of salvation from the evil Casnoffs. Confused? Readers should be unless they have read previous Hex Hall books. As the cast of characters grows, it is not just names that the reader must keep straight—it is also the category of being Brannick, Prodigium, vampire, ghost, demonic fairy, and more. Sophie is a fairly plucky heroine and quite likeable. The action is pretty nonstop and the plot engaging. Although this story does not stand alone, collections that already include the previous Hex Hall titles will want to add this one. Reviewer: Debbie Wenk
