Editorial Reviews

Booklist
"A gentle, thought-provoking story on the fickle nature of fame...Denman's story avoids simplified characters, creating a surprisingly layered treatment of media obsession."
Resource Links
"Orca Currents has once again hit the mark...The setting and plot come together in a very satisfying way. The most powerful element in the text, however, is undoubtedly the emotional honesty of the characters Denman creates...Zack could be a real person, and his responses to the situations he finds himself in resonate with authenticity."
Southwestern Ohio Young Adult Materials Review Group
"This fast-paced story is excellent for reluctant readers. Moreover, the sound-color synesthesia Zack experiences will intrigue many readers. An overall quick read that is recommended for purchase by public libraries."
The Horn Book Guide
"Zack's story is engaging."
CM Magazine
"Offers reluctant readers (or those reading below the assigned grade level) an edgy, fast-paced, and thought-provoking storyline written in a very straight-forward, comprehensible style. Highly Recommended."
Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
With an amazing number of twists for such a short novel, the author paints a fascinating picture of teen angst. Fifteen-year-old Zack is learning the ways of the world by means of a very nasty picture of him posted on the Internet. Feeling lonely and isolated due to his recent move to a new town, he is suspended from school and grounded by his single mother. Feeling sorry for Zack, Mom takes him geocaching, an activity where people seek swag (stuff we all get) by following GPS coordinates. Zack finds a CD and builds up the singer in his mind to the point he is compelled to find and befriend her. Zack also suffers from synesthesia, a condition that makes him see colors when he listens to music. Of course, the singer does not live up to his image, but he does find other friends along the way, and he discovers Mom can also be his friend. The author teaches several life lessons without getting preachy. A quick read, this book will appeal to boys and girls alike. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
