Meet the Author

Lisa J. Yarde writes fiction inspired by history. She is the author of On Falcon's Wings, a medieval novel chronicling the star-crossed romance between Norman and Saxon lovers. She has also written the medieval novels Sultana and Sultana’s Legacy, both set during a turbulent period of thirteenth century Spain. Born in Barbados, she currently lives in New York City.

    If you like history at all, this book is a must buy

    Sultana is a fantastic, well-written novel that engaged me, taught me, and made me think. Although there are a lot of historical details to process, Ms. Yarde handles them well and with a style that made the story impossible to put down. She is gifted at creating characters that are not only believable, but endearing, and scenes are painted with immersive and colorful brush strokes. I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment!

    A Sumptuous Journey Into Medieval Spain

    Ancient Spain is not a genre I would normally choose to read about, but I have read Miss Yarde's previous novel, 'On Falcon's Wings' and I enjoyed her writing style. Therefore I thought I would give it a try. However, two chapters in and I was completely hooked with the beautiful writing, and well researched detail as to how the last Muslim family to rule Spain lived, loved and fought. The way she takes the reader into their personal and political lives, and her portrayal of the sumptuous Alhambra Palace is masterly.

    I was told the author has been working on this book for years and it certainly shows in it's intricate detail and the emotion she has brought to her characters, their motivation and reactions to the violence and intrigue around them. Fatima and Faraj's arranged marriage may not, we assume today, the best of starts, but the love that develops between them over the years and which carries them through their various trials will touch your heart.

    A poignant story of a young woman who rises to power to become Sultana

    I first had the opportunity to read a few chapters of Sultana several years ago when I was a member of a historical fiction writers critique group. It was then that I fell in love with this story - the beautiful prose, the passion, and the unique setting of Moorish Spain. As time progressed, I became an avid follower of every chapter, offering feedback, but mostly praise. My respect for the author bloomed and before long we became good friends.

    Good writing always shines, as does a talented storyteller. As a writer myself, I have always made it a point to surround myself with other authors whose talent I admire and whose skill and knowledge I can benefit from. For me, Lisa was such an author. So it is with great pleasure that I host her here today and together we can reveal to the world, Sultana.

    Sultana is the culmination of years of research, travel, and writing - a tale that is spellbinding because of its passion and intrigue. It is the type of novel that will sweep you away into another world and time -and it will keep you reading long past bedtime. Already, I eagerly awake book two in the sequence.

    Sultana is not only delightfully rich in historical detail, but also a passionate story of love. Family secrets, intrigues, and driving ambition color every page of this novel. Lisa travelled extensively to the Al Hambra, walking its corridors and grounds getting a sense of the surroundings in which the heroine, Fatima, lived. It is for this reason, the novel comes to vibrant life.
