Welcome to Fizzy’s Lunch Lab, a kitchen where Professor Fizzy and his friends cook up delicious, nutritious meals while learning the science behind healthy foods. A cooking showdown between Professor Fizzy and his nemesis, Fast Food Freddy, owner of Greasy World, is about to begin. The challenge: cook the most delicious food as decided by three kid judges. If Fizzy wins, Freddy will have to serve Fizzy’s healthy meal at his restaurant for a month. Both teams prepare their meals — Fizzy a tasty, balanced one and Freddy a fatty, greasy one. The characters from the PBS Kids' show Fizzy's Lunch Lab teach kids about the importance of good nutrition. Professor Fizzy, the master of healthy eating, takes on Fast Food Freddy, greasy food expert. The challenge? The titular cook-off: Each chef will design a meal that three kids will then taste test. While Fizzy works with Avril and Henry, teaching them about the Food Plate, shopping the U at the grocery store and checking labels for nutritional information, Freddy does the opposite; his plate is divided into salty, sweet, greasy and fatty, and he shops the freezer section. The lunch labbers take readers through planning a meal, introducing kitchen safety tips and explaining how to eat a rainbow (of fruits and veggies, not jelly beans, Freddy). Throughout, Sully the Cell interjects to explain how the right foods are used to fuel the body, and Cpl. Cup provides the recipes that help Fizzy win the cook-off: Green Salad with Lime Dressing, Veggilicious Hoagie with Groovy Guacamole, Tortilla Chips and Berry Banana Fro-Yo. With asides about protein, fiber, fats and calcium, Fizzy covers all the bases, and kids can even get some tips on dinner conversation starters and how to set the table. The brightly colored digital illustrations match the TV show to a T, inelegantly making the leap to the page. Professor Fizzy, health foodie and culinary genius, is challenged to a dinner "throwdown" by Fast Food Freddy, his nemesis and Greasy World theme park owner. They must create a "super supper" menu to be served before a panel of kid judges, with the loser serving the winner's menu for an entire month. This lighthearted easy reader is a companion to the PBS Kids web series, Fizzy's Lunch Lab and works very well as a stand-alone. The nonfiction format succeeds with its bright and energetic layout. The kid-friendly cartoons cheerfully cover topics such as proper mealtime etiquette, how to effectively maneuver the supermarket, and how food affects our bodies. Each page is filled with fun facts and easy do-it-yourself recipes. The writing is age appropriate and informal. Kids will enjoy following Professor Fizzy as he is joined by a diverse group of characters on his quest to whip up the winning meal. Each chapter also mirrors Fast Food Freddy and his unwholesome choices. This will have broad appeal with even the youngest readers. Like Monster Health Book(Holiday House, 2006), this is a welcome addition to the genre and an excellent introduction to the value of nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
