Gr 2-4-A readable account of one heroine of the American Revolution. On April 26, 1777, in Patterson (now Ludington), NY, Colonel Ludington received word that the British were attacking and burning Danbury, CT. His 16-year-old daughter eagerly volunteered to spread the word and gather his troops in a dangerous midnight ride. Traveling over dirt roads in pouring rain, encountering outlaws, and battling fatigue, she accomplished her mission. As a result of her efforts, the troops arrived in time to push the British back to their boats rather than complete their march into New York. The afterword explains the young woman's further role in America's fight for independence. The full or half-page watercolor illustrations complement the straightforward, simple text.     Good for Women's History

    Seems like a reasonable account of American Revolutionary History and a feminine role. I am not sure about the number of children in her family though. Has anyone else found conflicting accounts?

    Sybil Ludington gives young girls a great role model.

    Great book. It's nice to see a book about a courageous young woman. By the way, as a current resident in the Carmel area, the town is not called Ludington or Ludingtonville, it's still Patterson, New York. Although there is a sign on route 52 naming the town Ludingtonville, it actually doesn't exist as a town.

    Sybil Ludington's Midnight Ride

    This is an excellent example of feminist history for young readers. This is a great family book for reading alone or together. Sybil was a young woman with fierce determination and courage. For those of us from the New York area, it is good to learn that a young local woman was involved in the fight against the British in the Revolutionary War.

    Sybil Ludington's Midnight Ride

    This book depicts a young woman's role in America's fight for independence. It should be required reading for elementary school history students. Young girls need more role models, and Marsha Amstel's SYBIL sets a positive, courageous and active example. I enjoyed reading this book to my eight year old nephew,who was in awe of Sybil and her contribution. Ms. Amstel has written a winner in Sybil Ludington's Midnight Ride.
