When Mother Goose flies to Texas,
She saddles her magic bird,
Wearing cowboy boots and silver spurs,
With twinkling stars to herd.
Out of the Texas sky she glides,
To children down below;
Circling past the cotton clouds,
She lands near the Alamo.

The author of Trucker's Night Before Christmas and Ten Redneck Babies: A Southern Counting Book retells the classic Mother Goose tales with a Texas twist. This fun Texas romp through more than fifty nursery rhymes yields such results as "Mary Had a White-Faced Calf," "There Was an Old Cowgirl Who Lived in a Boot," "Cactus Jack Horner," and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Texas Star."

This book will delight all ages with its unforgettable Texan flavor, as Humpty Dumpty after his fall turns into a plate of huevos rancheros and Little Miss Toni eats a biscuit and jerky. The vibrant, colorful illustrations combined with lively vocabulary encourage young readers to laugh and learn as they follow along.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Over fifty classic nursery rhymes are rewritten with a western and/or Texas twist. This book includes everything from "Twinkle, Twinkle, Texas Star" to "There was an Old Cowgirl Who Lived in a Boot." There are some hilarious versions of the rhymes, such as "Padre Pedro Picked a Passel of Peppers on the Pedernales." Many of the rhymes are short and have their own illustrations that are colorful, lovely, and fun. Adorable illustrations of children and animals fill every page, along with two or three rhymes. Some of the wording is contrived, but most of the rhymes bring original ideas that are fun to read. The western slant opens up some new vocabulary for young readers from other areas who are not familiar with western culture. Lines such as "Merchant Molly munched a tamale while shopping at the Mercado" give these poems a lot of "spice."
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-"Hush, little young'un, don't you squall;/Papa's gonna teach you the Texas drawl." Davis has lassoed the familiar rhymes and filled them with a plethora of places and folklore, from Galveston to Ft. Worth. Bluebonnets, the State Fair's "Big Tex," oil wells, the Alamo, armadillos, "San Antone," tacos, and tortillas all find a place with Mother Goose as she "saddles her magic bird,/Wearing cowboy boots and silver spurs,/With twinkling stars to herd" under the Texas sky. Engaging watercolor cartoon illustrations accompany the verses. "Padre Pedro picked a passel of peppers on the Pedernales" and Jack and Jill strike oil while drilling for water. This compilation might find a home in comparative studies classes.-Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

David Davis is the author of almost a dozen books with Pelican, including Jazz Cats, a 2002 Children's Book Choice selection; Librarian's Night Before Christmas; Nurse's Night Before Christmas; Ten Redneck Babies: A Southern Counting Book; Texas Aesop's Fables; Texas Mother Goose; and Texas Zeke and the Longhorn. Four of his books have earned spots on the Accelerated Reader list. He resides in Fort Worth, Texas.

An illustrator at heart, Ward left years of advertising illustration, where computers had gained a firm foothold in graphics, and jumped into children's books. "It took me a long time to find myself," she says, "but I love illustrating children's text and taking the art a few steps beyond the word, when there is an opportunity. "
