Love, lust, and action in the lush jungles of West Africa make up Laurens’s fast-paced third installment of the 19th-century Adventurers Quartet. Using the map from his brother’s mission in Freetown (in what is today Sierra Leone), Capt. Caleb Frobisher has discovered that the kidnapped people from A Buccaneer at Heart are now enslaved in a mining camp overseen by the dastardly Dubois. Frobisher must await a rescue mission, but time is running out. Among those kidnapped, governess Katherine Fortescue is a formidable heroine; her intelligence and strength make her a fitting love interest for the heroic Frobisher, and their chemistry adds to the heat and sizzle of the jungle setting. Laurens’s rich characterization and well-thought-out plot make for a captivating adventure romance and provide elements of danger and surprise throughout the story. The vivid narrative, combined with quick cuts from scene to scene, make for an engrossing read with an ending poised to continue the adventure with yet another Frobisher brother. (July)

A romantic rumble in the jungle. Capt. Caleb Frobisher is a man on a mission—a mission his older brothers started in the first two books of Laurens' Adventurers Quartet. He's been sent to follow a rumor that British citizens are being enslaved in a covert diamond mine in West Africa, which leads him to the mine where Katherine Fortescue is being held. Katherine, one of the de facto leaders of the captured group, is delighted to learn that a rescue attempt is underway. But when Dubois, the sociopath mine leader, discovers Caleb and his crew in hiding, they are also forced to work, and now all wait anxiously to see if rescue will arrive from England. After an instant attraction between Caleb and Katherine, their romance develops slowly, but once they finally kiss, their love becomes as unbreakable as the diamonds they mine. The plot drags under long descriptions of the complicated schemes of the prisoners but gains steam toward the end. Though the unusual setting is beautifully described in places, the realities of colonialism barely make an appearance, and readers who look for period details in their historical romance may want more. The book ends abruptly, and readers will need to wait for the final book in the series to see if the couple reaches their happy ending, as well as to uncover the mysterious backers of the illegal venture. An adventure-filled entry in a solid historical romance series that is best enjoyed in order.

I was not aware that Stephanie Laurens wrote serial books. Had I known that I wouldn't have purchased this one. I think the premise for the book was fine & the characters were fine as well. But, I kept wondering why the talk kept dragging on forever. Now I know why.

The Daredevil Snared is the third book in the series. Stephanie Laurens continues to amaze, entertain and make you feel like you are part of the story. This is Caleb and Kate's story. Caleb is the youngest of the Frobisher brothers and takes on the third leg of the mission to prove that he is responsible and can be trusted. Kate is one of the captives at the diamond mine. When they meet in the jungle, sparks fly. This is a great story and I cannot wait for the fourth and final segment.

The Daredevil Snared grabbed me from the very first page and didn't want to let me go! I was swept right away into Caleb and Kate's story, sitting on the very edge of my seat and hoping against hope that the captives would be able to stretch out their work in the mines until their rescue arrived. It all felt so gritty and real that it was as if I was right there with them--hiding on the rock ledge and watching over the camp with Caleb, going down into the mines and plotting ways to delay the inevitable with the men, painstakingly separating the rock from the raw diamonds with Kate--I experienced it all. The romance is lovely--Kate and Caleb have awesome chemistry--though at the same time just knowing that Dubois, a truly scary villain and the leader of the mining camp, wouldn't hesitate to use one of them to get to the other almost makes you want to encourage them to keep everything on the down-low. Because, yeah. I shudder just thinking about that guy. It pains me that he's still around for book 4--he needs to get his in a major way in the final book, or I shall be very put out. This is book 3 in the series, and though I hadn't read the first two--yet!--I had no problem picking the story up here. It definitely helped that Ms. Laurens gives us a "who's who" at the beginning--there's a lot of people involved, and it was easy to forget who all of them are and how they're connected--I turned to it quite a bit as I read. So...it was an okay place to start the series, but since the resolution of the overall mining-camp-with-English-captives plot won't be until book 4, (this one isn't a "cliffhanger" per se, but we definitely haven't gotten to the true HEA yet--geographically our hero and heroine haven't moved much from where they started at the book's beginning) I'd recommend starting with book 1 since there's time. The Daredevil Snared definitely won't be a "this is the only book in the series I'll read" book. But...we have to wait until December for the final book ( Lord of the Privateers )? Inconceivable! Though at least it does give me time to get caught up and read books 1 and 2, ( The Lady's Command and A Buccaneer at Heart ) so there is that... Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
