Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
John Daly once remarked that he learned a lot about golf from the drawings and descriptions in Golf Digest. He also said that Jack Nicklaus was his model, and he used to watch him on television. Thus, it is not impossible to learn golf outside of a student/teacher relationship-very, very difficult but not impossible. These three books, all aimed at people who are new to the game of golf, show the uninitiated what to expect and how to behave when on the golf course for the first time. Their value is not so much as primary texts, however, but as reinforcement to other instruction methods, such as a clinic or a videotape. How, for example, does a person remember what the instructor said about setup? Of the three, The Golf Rules Problem Solver does a fairly good job of explaining the rules of golf in fairly uncomplicated language and may be of some interest to the post-beginner. The other two are basic golf instruction books, of which there are no shortage. While Gary McCord's Golf for Dummies is fairly comprehensive, it does not have the strength of the visuals of these three books. George Hibbard's Perfect Impact is more limited to the swing of the golf club but does have a companion video. As golf is one of but a handful of sports (including tennis and swimming) that can be considered "lifetime" activities, a basic introduction to the game would be a good addition to any general library. Any of the three reviewed here would serve this purpose. However, if a library already has a good basic introduction to golf, it could easily take a pass on these.-Steve Silkunas, North Wales, PA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
