I just can’t get enough of this series and the second book did not disappoint!
These characters are so real and bring out such emotion that it was hard to put this book down. The dark romance and danger keep building and bring with it more exciting twists and turns in this book.
I really grew to like Kade as a character. The relationship between him and Riley I couldn’t help being excited over this new love interest.
Laria is even worse than before and it was exciting to see how Riley handled both her and her growing powers.
Fans of the first book are sure to love “The Haunted” which gives readaers even more action and romance than the first.

THE HAUNTED takes off immediately where book one in the MacKinnon Curse series, THE DEEPEST CUT left off. Thank goodness because I didn't want to miss one single second of what happened after Riley got her first glimpse of Kade, who looks exactly like his ancestor, Ian, a former ghost. I mean, I was a little hesitant to read this book because I was afraid that no one could compare to Ian with his flowing white shirt and his charming demeanor. But as it turns out, the MacKinnons have some strong DNA sequences because his descendant Kade, well, he is quite the Scottish charmer too. Then there's Laria, the evil ghost who is out to get Riley for interfering with Ian. She's back, and she's taking the evil to a whole new level. So now it's up to Riley to save herself, those she loves, begin a new relationship, and manage to avoid regressing into her cutting habit.
There are very few "ghost stories" that appeal to me. I think what makes this series work so well for me is that it's not only a ghost story. Riley is haunted, but she is also a normal teenage girl, in many ways. She is still dealing with her mother's death, her father's absences, and a brother she worries about. She still misses her friend, Ian, who she did have strong feelings for, but still let go. She is a former "cutter" who fights the urge to begin again every day. She is a girl who is falling for an impossibly cute, sweet guy who happens to be a dead ringer for her former love. The fact that THE HAUNTED deals with these issues makes the book appealing to even those who might not consider reading a ghost story.
On the other hand, THE HAUNTED is super creepy. Laria has taken the proverbial gloves off and is gunning for Riley, and she doesn't care who or what she has to go through to get to her. She is willing to possess and try to destroy Riley's friends and family. She is making herself known to those around her. There were honestly a few times I got goosebumps while reading this book. But it was written in a manner that didn't terrify me in a bad way, if that makes any sense. I guess I was a chilled but not paralyzed with fear.
I have to give author J.A. Templeton major credit for the choices she makes in her writing. To make Riley a cutter couldn't have been easy. It's a compulsion that isn't well understood by a lot of people and has been a controversial topic at times. She made me, through Riley, understand why someone would choose to do it, and even though a person may stop the act, the urge doesn't just go away. She also allows her characters to be flawed, less than perfect. Some of them drink, some smoke pot, they curse a bit, they have s-e-x. And sometimes their actions have consequences. It's not written in a glamorizing fashion. They're real, pure and simple.
While reading THE HAUNTED, I felt the same as I did while reading THE DEEPEST CUT. I got so lost in the story, and I didn't want to put them down, or end. I would tell myself "Just one more chapter" and look up an hour later, wondering what had just happened. And I'm not exactly sure what it is about them that causes this, possibly it's the gripping hook and the engaging characters, or wondering what evil Laria will spew next. I know if I got nit-picky, I could say the books aren't technically perfect. But the fact is, when you enjoy a books as much as I did THE DEEPEST CUT and THE HAUNTED, and add in that I'm dying to read book three, THE DEPARTED...well, that says it all.

I was really glad to be able to find out what happened to Riley. After the first book I wasn't sure if the story was ending or if it would continue. The first one was pretty good but this one was SO much better. It's such a fast and easy read, but the characters keep you waiting to see what's going to happen next. I can't wait for the next one to come out because I'm dying to find out what happens!!! Definately recommend this one!

I love this book and the first one in the series. The characters are so well developed you actually begin to care for them. I am far from a teen, as a matter of fact I am a mother of one. I have to recommend this book to my daughter as well as my non-teen friends! Can't wait for the third book to come out!

I very much enjoyed this book and absolutely cannot wait for the next in the series! My only complaint is about the formatting. Pages cut off, it was numbered wrong, and there were no breaks between chapters. Not a huge deal, but it definitely made reading it a bit difficult.

Templeton, in her first book The Deepest Cut, had my heart pleading for Riley and Ian’s love that could never be, and left me with a broken heart. But with The Haunted, Templeton pieces it back together, but not without tears and eerie chills. Riley is an awesome character. She has faced so much heart break and pain in her sixteen years, but she’s not a quitter. I love that about Riley—her strong-will to keep fighting for her family and the love she thought she could never have, but most of all, for herself. J.A. Templeton is an amazingly talented writer. She has given me the most intriguing, heart-felt story with a beautiful love that is forever.
Riley thought she had gotten rid of Laria after breaking her curse that held Ian earthbound, but that was just the beginning for Riley. With the MacKinnon curse, Riley will fight more than just Laria. Riley is fighting for her life and everybody she loves this time. With Ian gone, Riley is alone now to face the evil spirit Laria, but when Riley meets Kade, who is a descendent of Ian’s, she starts to feel that maybe Ian hasn't left her alone in this curse, after all.
Kade was everything I was hoping for up until the party. Right along with Riley's heart, mine was ripped to shreds. I thought J.A Templeton ripped my heart right out of me with Ian, but what she has happen with Kade and Riley is like pouring salt into an open wound. Dang! (not my first choice word I wanted to use here to express my feeling lol) This was painful to read, but J.A. definitely puts heartache in her storylines and this is what I love about her novels.
I’m also glad that The Haunted was a mature YA. For me, I love where the new YA is going. It’s just more believable with the teens of today and I can't wait until spring for the third book, The Departed, in the MacKinnon Curse. I highly recommend The Haunted as a chilling and heart-melting romance must read.
