The Monarchsby Stephen Mark Rainey
Devastated and homeless after a personal tragedy, Courtney Edmiston accepts an invitation to stay with her old college friend Jan Blackburn. Jan lives with her brother David and their eccentric Aunt Martha on the edge of the Dismal Swamp, near Fearing, North Carolina. There Courtney soon discovers that the Blackburns have tragedies and enemies of their own. Plus there is the strange, monstrous, looming figure she keeps glimpsing in the swap. Is this the ghostly entity known only as the Monarch? Is it friend . . . or deadly foe?

This is a perfect mix of the old-school gothic romance novels, and Lovecraftian horror. Swamp creatures, out-of-control rednecks...love and hate and weird old women. A very entertaining story of ancient , and not so ancient, evil ...
A bit young for me but good nevertheless. The idea of some supernatural evil being controlled by an elderly witch is an old story but this one has a few surprises in it.
Ann Rule's books have only disappointed me once and this certainly wasn't the book.
