Best Zombie Comic of All time.

I have been collecting this comic since the beginning. It will change how you view the zombie apocalypse. The author is not afraid of shocking and pissing you off. You may find a character that you love and that seems crucial to the story line and then like if the end of the world was actually happening they get snatched away from you. I get lost in these comics, they are just amazing. If you love comics, read it. If you don't like comics, read it. If you can't read, learn to read and then read it. No joke, it's that good.

The Zombie Story That Never Ends

There are things in life you can count on, that you know for sure you will have to deal with one day. Remember the famous saying, "Nothing is certain except death and taxes and the dead rising from their graves to feast on the living."? Well, in order to prepare for the inevitable zombie holocaust, in between games of Left 4 Dead, read The Walking Dead.

Drawn in stunning black and white, The Walking Dead is far from your typical comic book tale. It is a story we all know, one of zombies infesting the world, wiping out most of mankind and a small group of survivors that must learn to work and live together in order to survive the horrors of the world. Where The Walking Dead separates itself, is that it never promises hope. There is no cure, no army waiting to save our survivors, nothing. It is about survival, pure and simple.

Writer Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard deliver the bleakest book on the shelf, and it is incredible. Each issue horrifies and pushes the limits of the horror genre in any medium. The characters are never safe, and just when you get attached to someone, they are consumed by the never-ending wave of undead or worse yet, one of their fellow survivors. The Walking Dead can be hard to read at times, and that's part of what makes it so good.

So, before there is no more room in hell and the dead begin to walk the Earth, read The Walking Dead. It's an awesome comic book and you might even learn a couple survival tips. If nothing else, it will keep you from running to the nearest shopping mall like an idiot when the undead begin to roam free. That's the first place they'll look for you.

    Fantastic read!

The graphic novel series, which inspired the TV show, is a wonderful commentary on society. As others have pointed out, the "walking dead" in the title are not actually the zombies, but the survivors who simply try to endure in a dead world without civilization.
Kirkman delivers a masterpiece of zombie fiction that transcends horror stories to be a truly creative commentary and satire on American life.

    Outstanding

I rarely read comics, but this one came highly recommended by a friend. After watching the TV show and being somewhat disappointed, I was apprehensive about the comic. I LOVED the comic. The characters are complex, interesting, and the plot is ever-changing and interesting. I read the entire compendium in one sitting. I could not put it down. Great stuff. The content is very adult and violent, but also very well done and tasteful enough for a mature young adult. Absolutely superb storytelling. I highly recommend it.

Waiting until Compendium Volume 2 comes out

I enjoyed this since it doesn't quite follow the show so I don't actually know what is going to happen next.

I have really enjoyed the TV adaptation so far and decided to pick up this compendium in order to compare and contrast. The TV show is more polished and seeing an episode a week definitely leaves one hungering for more. The comics are for the most part a bit quicker at getting to a point and I am quite happy with the differences from the TV show. I look forward to reading the remaining volumes in the series as I don't see any possible spoilers for the TV show because the show writers are quite adept at changing the characters and maintaining the general story line.

I read it because I like the show and ...

    Warning : Beware of spoilers!!!!

I decided to read this compendium because I really love the tv show. I really did like the comic storyline but there are some major difference between it and the tv show. I like the overall storyline of the comic but would not put it in the top ten of comic titles that I have read.
I was quite shocked when Shane died early on here. It had a major impact on how both the arc of the tv show and comic developed. Only time will tell where the story goes from Herchel's farm on tv.
Its hard to compare the two. If anything, I think the comic has given me a better appreciation for the process of developing the show and why certain characters were added.
If you are thinking of reading the comic, go with this edition for 35 bucks. The art is good and the "Governor" story arc is definitely greatest strength of this part of the story line. You will be shocked at the ending of this volume.

Not big on graphic novels but wow

This is a great book (not to mention you will not find it cheaper). Basically, you won't have a life for the next month. It is so fast-paced and suspensful you can't put it down. In a world without rules you can't imagine what will happen.

    I Also Recommend:

If you love comic books or want to get into them, then you need to read this collection of The Walking Dead!!

I hunted up and down for this collection of volumes 1 through 8 of The Walking Dead series and I will never regret it. This book will wrap you in not because of the zombie slaughtering but the emotions and the changes that you see the characters go through. You will cry, fall in love with characters, and hate certain characters(ex: the Governor). I recommend this book for anyone who loves comic books but the content in this book is not meant for little ones under 14 years of age and I say that because I am a 15 year old who is allowed to read the series but, it contains a lot of blood and some sexual content. If your into comic books or want to get into them buy this book and you'll be looking out for the next volumes like I am currently awaiting volume 11:Fear the Hunters.

    Amazing series

The entire walking dead series is a great collection of Zombie survival. This book contains the first eight books in the series. The story lines are gripping and always changing, and the characters interact with each other in such a real way. While reading I often felt sadness or even mad at one of the characters in the story, which I almost never do. The only problem I have with this book is that it is so hard to find. I ordered it online and after waiting two months for it to ship Barnes and Noble canceled my order and i was forced to buy it in a store for $15 more than I ordered it for online. But aside from its rareness the series is a great addition to any one's collection, as long as they are over 16ish because there is some violence and strong language.
