Overview

It all started in college, in the turbulent sixties, when Randolph and Jenna became lovers. Randolph knew the moment he saw Jenna Haywood that he had to make her his. But the path to love is not an easy one. His wealthy Grandmother Julia disapproves of the match and unbeknowst to him, his brother's seemingly docile fiancee has a few plans of her own that she would like to set in motion. Betrayal and devastation lurks in unexpected places and tests the bond they believed was unbreakable. As they struggle with love and passion, secrets and lies the question is: Is love enough to help them see each other through the storms that await them ahead?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A sordid betrayal lies at the heart of Ties That Bind, a novel by Brenda Jackson (Family Reunion) spanning 35 years in the lives of two couples who become friends at Howard University in the 1960s. Randolph Fuller's wife, Angela, had to drug him to get him to sleep with her, but in the end she got her way: she became pregnant and forced Randolph to leave his true love, the modest, bookish Jenna. But 12 years later, Randolph and Angela are separated, Jenna conveniently widowed and the old lovers have an opportunity to start over. Jackson also follows the more sedate lives of Randolph's friends Noah and Leigh Wainwright and the various couplings of their offspring. In spite of all the action, the book offers a resounding moral: cheaters and sluts never prosper.
Library Journal
Jackson (A Family Reunion) sets her new work on a 1960s college campus, where there's plenty of talk about the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Still, personal problems loom largest, as four friends form a tight bond to help one another get through final exams, love affairs, and broken hearts. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Great Love Story

This is a true love story. If you believe the cliche "If you let love go and it returns then it's meant to be", then this book is for you.

My cousin said I would love Ms. Jackson....she was right!

After reading tons of Nora Roberts books, I thought I would never love another writer as much...I was wrong. Ms. Jackson, shares Ms. Roberts ability to "tell a great story" through great character development and intrigue of story line.

The difference for me is that Ms. Jackson uses Black characters....people you can get to know; like- dislike; love-hate; care about; worry about and ultimately miss at the end of the story. The subject matter in "Ties That Bind" love, innocence, loss, family, betrayal, reconciliation blend together wonderfully, to introduce the reader to conditions, circumstances, people, plots and outcomes you can beleive in and experience first hand.

It is so refreshing to experience connection with charactrers who are wonderful - or not so wonderful - but with whom you can share a common identity -in this case being Black. This 'tie' adds a new and 'binding' connection to the characters and the story for this reader. I suspect, however, not being Black does not leave one cold or even at a disadvantage....the impact is still significant and the experience well worth the cost in time and money!

I look forward to my next Brenda Jackson read. I think I have found another 'best writer' for me to discover and experience!

    A reviewer

I thought that this book was a compelling romantic love story that must be enjoyed by any and everyone! It was sad the amount of time lost throughout the novel. But at the end all the suffering and tragety could not tear down the love that the couple shared. I only wish I could experience the love they shared together with my special someone whom has yet to show his face. Wonderful read.

    Crafty, Edgy and Creatively Written

What a crafty, cleverly written and thought-provoking novel. Ms. Jackson does a wonderful job of giving detail when and where needed. She shows us that even people with money, power and success have hang-ups and intro-racism. Yet the story is truly laced with love, commitment and devotion and dedication. She renews our faith in what it takes and means to be in love and all that it entails. If you've been blessed enough to have found your soulmate or are looking then this book is for you. While reading this story you'll meet some wonderfully powerful characters such as, Jenna, Randolph, Noah, Leigh, Johnny, Elle and a host of others you won't soon forget. Make sure you share this one with others.

    Couldn't Put It Down

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Brenda Jackson is definitely a master of the written word. Couldn't stop until I was finished. Enjoyed the romance between all the couples but especially Jenna and Randolph. It was a story that contained so many things, history, love, suspense, betrayal, corruption, happiness and it spanned almost 50 years of family and friends. It should be a mini-series.

I have read about 20 Brenda Jackson books. I think this one is simply the best I laughed and I cried. At some points I was wondering how could I get so emotional just reading a book. Brenda makes you feel you know these people, and so many things that happen you can relate to. She really does a wonderful job adding history into this book making you remember the past and enlighting you on things you didn't know. I cannot say enough about this book. This women is a totally gifted writer. She has really been given a gift from god. I look forward to reading many more of her books.

    ROMANCE AT IT'S BEST

I am not one who reads all the time, but when I picked up this book I could not put it down. I loved Randolph's character, it was refreshing to read about a man with such conviction for a woman. I also loved and cried when Jenna step aside in spite of her dislike for Angela and because of her love for Randolph. I felt as if I knew these characters. The way Mrs. Jackson describs the looks and the chemistry between these two is dramatic. You get swept away in their lives. Hats off to Mrs. Jackson. This is truly a novel for our times.

I've read 4 other books written by Brenda Jackson, but this one really hit home with the history of African Americans, the love, the disagreements, and the determination of all the characters in the book. After picking it up I couldn't put it down and was up till 3:00 in the morning trying to finish it to see how it ended. Excellent book!!!!
