Overview

When physicist Michael Shelborne mysteriously vanishes, his son Shel discovers that he had constructed a time travel device. Following his father's trail through history-from the enlightenment of Renaissance Italy through the American Wild West to the civil-right upheavals of the 20th century-Shel makes a devastating discovery that sends him feeling back through the ages, and changes his life forever.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
McDevitt (Seeker) avoids flashy action scenes in this tale of two friends using a time machine to take a grand tour of history. When Adrian “Shel” Shelbourne's physicist father disappears and leaves behind a time-travel device, Shel and his friend Dave Dryden, a language expert, search for Shel's father in Galileo's Italy, Selma during the civil rights marches and other famous times and places. Realizing that time resists paradoxes and history can't be changed, the two friends seize the opportunity to live enriching, truly humane lives from Thermopylae to a few minutes in the future. As the paradoxes begin to pile up and their luck in dodging some of history's villains runs out, McDevitt ingeniously handles a tricky denouement that will leave readers satisfied. (Nov.)
Library Journal
Physicist Michael Shelborne's disappearance leads his son Shel and a linguist to discover his portable time machine and set off in search of him, interacting with times and places they had heretofore only dreamed of until Shel makes a cardinal mistake, forever changing his life. In a departure from his space-travel-oriented sf adventures such as his Priscilla Hutchins and his Alex Benedict novels, McDevitt touches upon a beloved sf theme. His approach, however, plays fast and loose with the paradoxes inherent in temporal interventions, while at the same time demonstrating the consequences of such recklessness. VERDICT This entertaining blend of sf classic and missing-persons drama is a good choice for most fans of hard sf or those fascinated by time travel.

    more from this reviewer

This is a super time travel thriller

Michael Shelborne is a two time nominee for the Nobel Prize; a brilliant scientist in numerous fields until one day he disappeared without a trace. The mystery of his vanishing intensifies because the evidence looks as if he was home when he disappeared.

Michael's lawyer gives his son Shel a letter that directs him to a rented mailbox where he will find three Q pods that he must destroy. Shel does not destroy them, but experiments with them to find out what happened to his dad. He learns they are tools that enable a person to travel through time. Shel decides to find his father and bring him home, but he will need to visit many lands in different eras. He confides what he knows to his friend linguistic expert Dave Dryden who he needs to help him with ancient languages. They travel back in time and see first hand major events, but finally catch up to Michael. However, the results of the reunion are nothing like what Shel or Dave expected. When Shel goes into the future, he discovers something that prevents him from returning to his time and to Helen the woman he loves.

This is a super time travel thriller that explains many of the logic paradoxes including being in the same general place at the same time, but does so in easy to understand language yet never dumbed down. That is the key to Jack McDevitt's excellent tale filled with action in diverse eras, a strong lead pairing and a solid support cast. The search for Shel's elusive father is enhanced by a who's who of Western history as the hero gets a lesson in life especially when he breaks his pact with Dave and goes back to the future.

If you like McDevitt, you'll love this book!

A wild, interesting and sometimes funny romp through time. As always, McDevitt writes for the reader. His style is easy-going and down-to-earth. Give "Time Travelers" a try.

    A Good Time Traveler Tale

This book was a quick and easy read. The historical sections were very entertaining and informative. The technology and physics behind the time devices was never explained.

    A Bit Tired

I must confess that I was expecting more. The story's cohesion was tenuous and only seemed like an excuse for the protagonists to meet with various historical personages in different vignettes. The main story line was definitely subordinate to the vignettes. The main characters never came alive and remained two-dimensional. This book, though a pleasant enough diversion, certainly does not show the author at his best. The plotting is convoluted and the characters never rose to the point where I cared about them. Mr. McDevitt needs to return to or create an equivalent to his main series that involve Priscilla Hutchins or Alex Benedict.

    Engrossing reading

I loved his take on history as seen thru the eyes of the quite unwilling participants. I wanted to travel with them, and indeed I did; the authors skill in bringing you into the story is, in my view, as good as Tolkiens. McDevitt is an excellent writer and created a fun, believable, and realistically portrayed romp with this work. I am left hoping for more in this "universe".

    Meh...

What could have been a pretty good book was ruined by the hyper Liberal, antireligious attitude of the author.
Want to write a good book ? Leave politics out of it.
