Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Based on a true story, this book is prefaced by information about the legendary ship, the Titanic, and its tragic encounter with an iceberg. The text of this picture book quickly turns to the story of an Irish cabin boy Jim, who spies a cat on the deck of the Titanic. Soon, he is assigned the care of the little tortoiseshell. Jim's Da "worked in the Belfast shipyard, so Jim knew all the lore about ships and their cats." The readying of the Titanic for her maiden voyage unfolds in simple text and lushly gold-hued illustrations. Jim's deepening relationship with the cat is framed in the small details about chores to be done and kittens found on B-deck. When the ship docks and the cat goes missing, Jim looks for her, his concern for her growing in small, incremental strokes. Then, he finds her carrying her kittens off the ship and mewing. He interprets this as a sure sign of a difficult journey ahead; at this point, the story is both surprising and inevitable. Crisp has done the work of researching her background, and this gentle tale of the connection between a boy and a cat rings clear and true. A small-print author's note offers additional details. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
School Library Journal

Gr 1-4- Jim Mulholland is a young man ready to see the world as a cabin boy on the Titanic . He comes from a family with maritime roots; he understands the traditions of life on the sea, as well as its superstitions. When he is charged with taking care of the ship cat while the vessel runs through its trials and prepares for its maiden voyage, Jim takes his job seriously. And when the cat gives birth to four kittens, he becomes extra vigilant. He cannot believe how lucky he is to be working on such a beautiful new ship. But while the Titanic is docked at Southampton, Jim spots the cat removing her kittens one by one. Concerned that she has forgotten one, he takes it to her and consequently misses the sailing. His duffle bag, his dreams-gone. Six days later, he learns just how lucky he is. An author's note details how Crisp researched this true story about a ship cat and the boy she saved. Papp's fresh-faced Jim and winsome kittens provide a sense of optimism as they await the great adventure that will never be. The picture-book format works well for this brief episode in the disaster. Reluctant readers will be able to read this amazing tale on their own, while listeners with a taste for longer read-alouds will enjoy hearing it.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

Kirkus Reviews
Young Jim Mulholland's very excited to be a cabin boy on the new ship Titanic. It's not only the ship's maiden voyage, but his as well. He deems it good luck when a tortoiseshell cat greets him at the ship's berth. She turns out to be the ship's cat, and Jim is put in charge of her. He discovers she's just had a litter onboard, and Jim has his hands full with both cats and chores. In Southampton, Jim sees the cat taking her kittens ashore as the passengers are boarding. The cat isn't fast enough to get all her kittens, so Jim helps and finds himself stranded on shore as the ship leaves. When news of the disaster breaks, Jim thanks the mother cat for sharing her luck with him. Based on stories that came to light only recently, Crisp's tale is told well enough. Papp's photorealistic paintings are beautiful but overdramatic, and the cats are inconsistently colored. Still, this will please young Titanicophiles and some kitten fans. Great Book for Reading to Children!

I happened to find this book first in the library one day when I was looking for a book to read at the elementary schools during Reading Week! It jumped out at me because of the beautiful cover picture. (And also because I have a cat that looks just like '401'.)

First - this book helps teach young students about a true live event, the sinking of the Titanic! I'm still not sure if the part about the cat is true, but it makes for interesting discussion. It was very appropriate for k thru 5th grades. They all loved it!

Second - it is just the right length to read during a 20-30 minute class and still have discussion time.

Third - the pictures are BEAUTIFUL! It is easy to read while holding up so the students can see the pictures --- BUT... after reading this to approximately 6 different groups, I noticed something..... the story is about a cat and 3 kittens.... near the end of the book, the picture shows 4 very DIFFERENT kittens in the sack! Hate to give that away about the story, but the kids just loved discussing this and learning to read and watch 'very closely' to stories and books.

I LOVE this book - and now need to buy a copy to have on hand each time I am asked to read!
