Overview

As if she needed yet another reason to shop, Queen of the Vampires Betsy Taylor is in the middle of planning the perfect wedding to drop-dead gorgeous vamp Eric Sinclair. And she’s not about to let little things like death and blood-drinking get in her way.

But all is not bouquets and bridal showers—Betsy is plagued by ghosts who demand her help in rectifying their past mistakes, and a serial killer is on the loose. With his victims all being tall, blond women, Betsy fits the profile exactly…

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
MaryJanice Davidson gives vampire queen Betsy Taylor a Christmas to remember in this fourth funny outing in her bestselling Undead series. This time, Betsy's holiday cup runneth over. For starters, Betsy's mother has finally erected Betsy's tombstone in the local cemetery. A psycho nut job serial killer is targeting tall, thin blondes in the Twin Cities: women who look like Betsy. Her vampire mate, Eric Sinclair, is balking at wedding planning and at the modern notion of communication, while her hateful stepmother has just had a baby. Of course, it's time for the irrepressible Betsy to launch an advice column for vampires trying to cope and to team up with a freshly killed ghost to track down her murderer. But why does her sister, Laura, keep taking out that sword? As usual, Betsy floats triumphantly in a sea of chaos, helped and hindered by the usual madcap cast of vampires and humans.

Here's a special quiz inspired by memorable moments in Undead and Unreturnable:

The questions:
  1. What are Betsy's biggest concerns as she stares at her own gravestone?
  2. Which of Betsy's extended family members is really the devil's daughter?
  3. Has Betsy been powerfully attractive to all men all her life?
  4. In which book did Betsy make her debut?
  5. Why is Eric Sinclair resisting the notion of their wedding?
  6. What are the top three signs that Eric is really a metrosexual?
  7. How will Betsy be able to survive the holidays?
The answers:
  1. She is baffled by the inscription on the tomb ("Our Sweetheart, Only Resting"), and she prefers calla lilies in her home, not wasted in a cemetery.
  2. Her stepsister, Laura.
  3. No, just since she died.
  4. She made her debut in Undead and Unwed.
  5. He claims they are already married by vampire law, so a wedding is redundant.
  6. He enjoys redecorating, advising Betsy's friends on fashion, and will only drink tea made from leaves, not bags.
  7. It's a trick question -- she's already dead!

Meet the Author

MaryJanice Davidson
MaryJanice Davidson

MaryJanice Davidson is the New York Times bestselling author of the Undead novels featuring Betsy Taylor; Derik's Bane, and the new young adult novels featuring Jennifer Scales, written with her husband, Anthony Alongi, among other titles.

Biography

Reading the coyly self-deprecating autobiography on her web site, one gets the distinct impression that MaryJanice Davidson does not have the slightest interest in talking about herself. Perhaps it's because she simply doesn't have the time. Prolific does not begin to describe this chart-busting dynamo, the author of four bestselling series and literally dozens of novellas and short stories.

A writer with a few romances and YA novels to her credit, Davidson had tried for years to interest publishers in her idea for a humorous, tongue-in-cheek vampire romance. After dozens of rejections (and assurances that there was no market for paranormal!), she submitted her manuscript for publication online. An editor at a New York publishing house downloaded the story, was royally entertained, and contacted Davidson to acquire the print rights to Undead and Unwed. On the spot, she was offered a three-book contract.

When Undead and Unwed and its wry sequel, Undead and Unemployed, were released in early 2004, not one, but two stars were born: Davidson and her irresistible protagonist, the reluctant vampire queen Betsy Taylor. A smart, sassy, 27-year-old secretary, Betsy is killed in a freak car accident and wakes up (so to speak) to discover that she is not only a vampire but the much-prophesied Queen of the Undead. Readers loved Davidson's wry take on vampire literature, a genre long distinguished by its gothic self-seriousness. Betsy, with her smarty-pants attitude and passion for designer shoes, is one vampire queen who owes more to Sophie Kinsella than to Anne Rice.

While Davidson has continued to produce more Undead novels, she has also found the time to launch three other romantic fantasy series featuring 1.) a hybrid mermaid named Fred, 2.) an eccentric family of Alaskan royals, and 3.) a cyborg spy. All are infused with her trademark wit and imagination. In addition, she and her husband, Anthony Alongi, have written the Jennifer Scales series, originally marketed to young adults and re-released as fantasy fiction for all ages. Davidson also remains one of the most popular writers of paranormal romantica; her short stories and novellas appear regularly in anthologies.

Good To Know

Davidson is not the only one in her family to achieve fame. Her mother once broke the world record for target shooting.

Before she devoted her time to chronicling the love lives of vampires and werewolves, Davidson was voted Miss Congeniality in her high school.

Even though Davidson is one of the most popular writers of modern monster fiction, in real life she is actually terrified of the undead. In fact, she is currently holding a contest on her web site asking readers to put together a twelve-step program to help her get over her fear of zombies!

As she writes on her website, Davidson lived a transient life as a young girl. Her father's career in the U.S. Air Force led her to live in such disparate locales as Guam, Mississippi, and North Dakota. As she grew older, her life in the working world was just as restless as her childhood. She tried her hand at everything from waitressing to modeling to editing to a stint as a medical test subject (!) before settling on a career as a bestselling novelist. These days, her life may be a bit more settled, but it has hardly slowed down.

A few fun outtakes from our interview with Davidson

"I'm a former model -- worst job ever, honestly."

"I'm a gigantic sushi hog -- it's pretty much my favorite meal."

"The more terrible and groaningly awful a horror movie is, the more I like it."

"Um, I like bubble baths? Seriously. I know that sounds like something a Playboy Bunny would say, but I really do."

"I like taking my kids to new restaurants and encouraging them to try new dishes -- we did "Dim Sum" just the other day."

Betsy & Christmas Shopping - A Deadly Combination

As Christmas approaches, Betsy has more on her mind than Queenly duties. There's still shopping to be done, a Christmas tree to put up in Jessica's house (to the horror of the vamps that reside there!) and her new baby step-brother. There's also a wedding to plan (she keeps pushing back the date she'll make it official with Sinclair), the matter of former-Bee Jon wanting to write her life's story for a college class, the reappearnce of vampire librarian Marjorie who wants her to write a column for the new vamp-based newsletter, and that god-awful Book of the Dead. Add to that some other problems--there's a murderer called the Driveway Killer loose in Minneapolis, Sinclair isn't too happy about finding out that Betsy can hear his thoughts during their 'intimate' moments, and Jessica is dating Detective Nick--and you have another comedy of errors starring the Queen of the Vampires. This book is typical MaryJanice Davidson funny, sarcastic, and full of snarky dialogue. Add to that Eric Sinclair's delicious 'metrosexuality', and it's another winner.

    Witty, Funny, and Delicious...!

One may think that as the series keeps going, the books get worse. This is NOT the case for the Undead Series. Betsy is still as funny as ever, and this time, finding the "Driveway Serial Killer". The romp between Betsey and Sinclair is still as sexy as ever, and getting stronger by the book. I absolutley LOVE this series, and cannot wait to keep reading! Always 5 stars for MaryJanice Davidson, and the Undead Series!

    BE AWARE

These are a fun read and entertaining but be aware that in book 9 in the last 2 pages the author betrays everything she laid out about the characters in the series previous books. I love a good plot twist but with this one everything you learn and know about the characters you learn is not true and I felt by reading the first 8 books and getting to the plot change in book 9 the author violates all you knew so enjoy but be prepared if you choose to try and read these

Great Series about Vampires, Witty and Fun

This series is great of people who enjoy a good story about Vampires. If you liked Twilight or Dead Until Dark you will love this. MaryJanice Davidson had a great writing style and keeps you pulled in all the way through. I enjoyed the series so much, I have purchased her other books as well. A great selection to tell your friends about. They should make this series into a movie or TV series. How great would that be!

Read Book One First! Not for Kids or Teens

Read this series in order. Davidson picks up where she left off and if you haven't read the previous book(s), you'll be lost! Graffic sexual descriptions, but a fun book anyway.

    LOVE THIS SERIES!

Twilight can't compare!--Unlike those vamps in Twilight--these characters actually kill people and drink blood because they're vamps! Sexually oriented as well--not gonna find that in those Twilight books--LOVE Mary Janice Davidson. I want more.

    Hardcore vampire story

I loved this book. I had to read all of them. MaryJanice managed to make a regular human woman into a very strong willed vampire queen! Not so much as a seductress vampire but a vampire who is human most of the time. Added that the very sexual and all man Eric Sinclair is her betrothed just makes it all the better! It is hardcore supernatural romance and it is all put together in a very interesting and tight way. No loose ends in this book and thats one of the best parts. The war and the romance is what makes up this book and a better combination could not be made. You will want to read more and more and never get enough.

    Really like this one!

Dumb Blond, yes I think so. This is about a dumb blond that dies and becomes a vampire. How much funnier can you get?! I think this book is to really pick on the serious ¿Vampire Novels¿. You know like Anne Rice?! Serious and vampire in the same sentence, is that not an oxymoron? Who¿s a dumb blond now? It is light and funny something that can make you just laugh and relax with a nice cup of coffee after a bad day of work or hot chocolate and a warm blanket when its raining

Not the best Installment, but I still Recommend it!

This wasn't the best action installment in the series. But, I liked how it took the time to show you a little more of Eric and Betsy's daily life especially Eric. There were a few unanswered questions about Laura and Jess, but I can't wait for the next book to come out.

No one does humorous romantic fantasy better

In Minneapolis when Elizabeth Anne Taylor died on her thirtieth birthday, her mother bought the gravestone. However, instead of resting for eternity in her plot, Betsy got up that night as the queen of the undead. The funeral was canceled, but her mom thinking you never waste a good pair of shoes decides to place the tombstone on the gravesite anyway. Thus, Betsy visits her gravesite a touching moment though Betsy worries she might ruin a pair of expensive shoes................. However she has no time for grieving because Betsy must prepare for her wedding with her soulmate (do vampires have souls?) Eric Sinclair after totally rejecting his royal snobbiest (through three previous ¿Undead¿ tales). However, irate female ghosts who fit Betsy¿s profile of tall and blond demand she track down the serial killer who murdered them. Betsy assumes this is easy to accomplish as how can the culprit kill someone who is already dead so maybe now she can go shopping without the haunting of her dead peers.......... No one does humorous romantic fantasy better than the incomparable MaryJanice Davidson. Her latest Betsy¿s ¿Undead¿ thriller starts off with a graveyard scene and turns eerier by the moment yet always retains wit and amusement. Betsy is in rare form as she plays an amateur sleuth encouraged by ghostly ¿clones¿ who nudge her worse than her mom ever did. Eric is his royal coolness except when he deals with Betsy getting into one fiasco after another when all he wants is to share Christmas blood with his beloved. The support cast is as nutty as ever as UNDEAD AND UNRETURNABLE is another wacky fun fantasy with a touch of mystery and a pinch of horror mixed in the red looking eggnog....... Harriet Klausner

Not exactly what I had hoped for

I was bored senseless by this book and I had so looked forward to reading this installment. It was more like a day in a life series and how boring some days truly are. The most dull parts were Betsy and her beau not committing to a wedding date. Betsy was so limp, I found that my hero in this book was the devil sister. Unfortunately, there was very little tension and action. All the books in the series before this one were a fun read.

    Thinnest plot of the series

There is not much going on in the latest installment. It's more like a couple days in Betsy's life (if the undead have a life) but no plot to speak of. All of the books in this series are short, but this one isn't really novel length. Still, it was a good way to spend a chilly evening.

    Hilarious!

I loved this book! I have been a fan of this author for awhile now. I particularly love the Undead series. You never know what is going to happen with Betsy and how she'll react. And Eric is so yummy! He seems to be slowly softening around Betsy this time around.

    Undead #4

This was okay. Not my favorite. It was really choppy. A lot of things were not explained I thought. I liked seeing Betsy's nicer side though. It was a nice break from all the complaining.
