Overview

He is an expert with the latest technology...a madman with the mind of a genius and the heart of a killer. He quietly stalks his prey. Then he haunts the police with cryptic riddles about the crimes he is about to commit—always solved moments too late to save his victims' lives. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas found the first victim butchered in his own home. The second lost his life in a vacant luxury apartment. The two men had little in common. Both suffered unspeakable torture before their deaths. And both had ties to an ugly secret of ten years past—a secret shared by none other than Eve's new husband, Roarke.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The publishing world might be hard-pressed to find an author with a more diverse style or fertile imagination than Roberts, writing here as J.D. Robb. As in her five earlier Eve Dallas novels, the time is mid-21st century, and tough super-cop Lieutenant Dallas continues to control New York City's chaos with faulty, outdated equipment while bringing the scum of the Earth to justice. At the moment, the scum is a high-tech serial killer who specializes in death by torture and dismemberment. Eve quickly learns that the killer's target is none other than her beloved husband, Roarke, whose own violent past is linked to the killer. Though the evidence is inconclusive, all clues point to Roarke's faithful butler and Eve's relentlessly annoying nemesis, Summerset. This latest addition (after Ceremony in Death) is a perfect balance of suspense, futuristic police procedure and steamy romance. In short, it is truly fine entertainment. (Oct.)

Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts is the number-one New York Times-bestselling author of more than 150 novels, including High Noon, Angels Fall, Blue Smoke, and Northern Lights. She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb. There are more than 280 million copies of her books in print.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

    Better and Better

The more I read this series the more I fall in love with Eve and her band of merry friends. J.D. Robb has created a heroine that you want to protect, comfort and cheer on in equal turns. Her friends are unique, her partner is hilarious and her marriage..rocky, passionate and wonderful. Great read.

    definitely one of my favorites

The book begins with Eve closing an open and shut case - just like she enjoys them. Unfortunately, on her way out she receives a call from an unidentified caller stating that he has just committed a first-degree murder. Then he proceeds to taunt Eve with a riddle. The name of his riddle is - Revenge.

It doesn't take long for Eve to determine that this comes from Roarke's past or that Summerset is being implemented in the murders. As much as she should enjoy questioning and taunting him - knowing this came from Marlena's torture makes it difficult for her.

I think my favorite part of the entire book is when Eve's driving though town, asks Peabody a question, and gets the response, "I'm sorry, sir, you're interrupting my praying".

Great story with all the suspence and twist and turns

I started reading her books when she was writing for Hariliquin romances. She is a wonderful suspence writer with all the twist and turns and romance all in the right places. I discovered her Death series by accident and I am now very much enjoying all her futuristic cop series. There is a little of Dallas in all of us.

    I Also Recommend:

    Vengence: In Death

For those who like crime thrillers, romance, or just a good book to get lost in!

This one tends to get a bit graphic, so if you don't like particularly gruesome scenes or rituals outside the norm, just be careful!

Be sure to continue with the series and see what other adventures Eve and Roarke get into!

    J.D. Robb is AMAZING!!!

I have the entire In Death Series, all 28 books, including the latest release Promises in Death and they are GREAT!!! I was a bit surprised at the beginning with the futuristic theme but, once you get into Eve Dallas' character, THAT'S IT, you're HOOKED! The writing is excellent, it keeps you wanting more and more and just looking forward to the amazing plot. Keep 'em coming Nora....your fans love it.

    Intriguing

This book was one that really hit home for the main character, Eve Dallas. Also, it was a race against time. I would recommend it for anyone who likes to read thrillers.
