Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The breathless "39 Clues" mystery/adventure series continues in this seventh entry as Amy, age 14, and her 11-year-old brother Dan attempt to find clues hidden around the world that promise to lead to "the greatest power ever known" and also reveal the truth about their family. This volume begins right where Book 6, In Too Deep, leaves off: the two are stranded on a small Indonesian island as their punk-rock au pair, Nellie, zooms to their rescue, with the police hot on her trail. A musical clue sends them off to South Africa, where they learn about Shaka, the founder of the Zulu nation; apartheid; the Boer War; Winston Churchill; and more about their untrustworthy relatives. They end up at a mysterious factory where people are being trained as warriors dedicated to defending the Tomas family branch, and Dan faces mortal danger. Amy and Dan finally learn to which family branch they belong. Plot twists and turns abound, and do not even think of tackling this volume before reading others in the series. It is a swift read, and Lerangis (who also wrote The Sword Thief, Book 3 in the series) successfully weaves humor and intriguing historical details into the suspenseful plot. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick
School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—As the search for the clues to the Cahill family's source of power continues, siblings Dan and Amy are stuck on an Indonesian island after seeing a woman die and are being sought by the police in connection with her death. The pair assembles clues which send them to South Africa with their hip au pair, Nellie, trying to find clues connected to Winston Churchill and Shaka Zulu. After many close calls, they end up at a guarded building they believe to be on the Shaka Zulu's burial site. Dan and Amy use their intelligence and quick thinking to decode messages and get out of precarious situations. Things really start to get dangerous when they discover a buried box with treasure and another branch of the family tries to kill them. Clues seem to point to an awful truth about their parents, but can it possibly be true? This episode (Scholastic, 2010) by Peter Lerangis is masterfully narrated by David Pittu. Fans of the series will hang on every word as Dan and Amy continue their quest for the 39 clues.—Teresa Wittmann, Westgate Elementary School, Edmonds, WA

    more from this reviewer

    suspenseful continuation to the race

Out of all the seven books I've read so far in the series, this one is the most suspenseful. The latest lead takes 14 year-old Amy Cahill and her 11 year-old brother Dan Cahill to South Africa in search of the next clue in the hunt for the 39 clues that unlock the secret to a great power.

Although South Africa does not come alive to me as some of the other destinations did, the author focuses on its history of fighting apartheid and gaining civil rights. We meet some of the late Grace's good friends and learn more about her through them. Shaka Zulu and Sir Winston Churchill are the historical figures that play a role in the discovery of the latest clue.

Some of the characters that appear in this book are Isabel Kabra and her kids, still vicious enemies who pursue Amy and Dan. The Holts make a brief appearance and Hamilton helps them out again in secret. Makes me wonder what will become of this relationship between Hamilton and the Cahill kids. Alistair Oh makes his usual "help the kids, then disappear" act. And Nellie Gomez, their au pair is with them throughout their mission to find the next clue. Amy and Dan finally confront Nellie about their suspicions of her and she reassures them with explanations that re-establish the trust they had from the beginning of their journey. It seems clear to me that she cares about them, but I am still trying to figure out who she really is!

Toward the end of the book, an incident occurs and Dan is fighting for his life. And. Amy and Dan finally learn the truth about their family branch. In retrospect, I should have known all along. This book makes me very eager to begin Book 8. We are getting closer to the end and we feel it.

My 11 yr old daughter loved the Viper's Nest, 39 Clues #7

My daughter loves this series and this seventh book is no exception! She finds them engrossing but says you need to buy them so that you also get the cards in order to play the online games. Getting a library book is not as good since they don't come with the cards.
