Now that the Shawnees are dead or have left, Weasel has turned on the settlers. Like his namesake, the weasel, he hunts by night and sleeps by day, and he kills not because he is hungry, but for the sport of it...I know what I have to do. Weasel is out there. He could come here and hurt us. Maybe Pa can wait for the day when we'll have the law to take care of men like Weasel. But I can't...

Alone in the frontier wilderness in the winter of 1839 while his father is recovering from an injury, eleven-year-old Nathan runs afoul of the renegade killer known as Weasel and makes a surprising discovery about the concept of revenge.

Editorial Reviews

Kliatt
This novel is poignant reading for middle school students and reluctant readers.
Publishers Weekly
In PW 's words, ``Readers drawn to pioneer adventure will not be disappointed by this fast-paced novel set in Ohio during the 1800s. The book succeeeds in building tension and revealing thought-provoking ideas about human frailties and the struggle to accept unpleasant truths.'' Ages 8-12. (Oct.)
Children's Literature
Rarely does the face of evil appear so vividly in a children's book as it does in the novel Weasel. Set in 1839 in Ohio, it can be read superficially as a grand adventure story. Nathan Fowler, 11, is captured by the renegade killer Weasel, escapes, and then plans his own revenge. On a deeper level, this is a story about the morality of taking another person's life regardless of his unspeakable deeds. Certainly Weasel deserves to die, but as Nathan's father points out, "Is it the act of pulling the trigger that makes a person brave?" The reasonable voice of Nathan's father adds depth and hope to this story. It is a page-turner that reads aloud well and will give you much to think about. 1991 (orig.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-7A ruthless villain known as Weasel commits unspeakable atrocities in the frontier wilderness. When 12-year-old Nathan's family is victimized, the boy is determined to avenge the wrongs on his own. A masterfully told, riveting tale sure to inspire strong discussion about moral choices. (May 1990)

Chapter One

The State Of Ohio, 1839...

The dogs were dozing in their usual places by the fire when the knock came.

My sister, Molly, and I jumped. Who could be stopping at our cabin, so deep in the woods, so far from town, so late at night?

Pa! I thought. But, no, Pa wouldn't knock. He'd come right through the door, white teeth smiling through his dark whiskers, brown eyes dancing, and say, "I'm back! Who's got a hug for me?" And I would run and --

Knock knock knock.

Duffy and Winston were fully roused by then and began barking wildly. They jumped at the cabin door, sniffing and whining. Molly and I joined them.

"Who's there?" called Molly.

No one answered. But again --

Knock knock.

I opened the door a few inches and peered into the darkness.

A man stood in the shadows, back a ways from the cabin. I knew it was a man, but he made me think of a wild creature. He was shy of the cabin and the light from the doorway. I had the feeling he might turn and run, like an animal that senses danger.

He was dressed like no white man I had ever seen, in tattered clothing and what looked like animal skins. I could make out a tall hat and long, tangled hair. His beard was dark and so were his eyes, which were looking right into mine.

The dogs stopped barking and stood quietly, staring at the stranger. We stared, too, waiting for him to speak. Finally Molly said, "Who are you? What do you want?"

Withoutsaying a word, the man reached into the leather pouch that hung over his shoulder. He found something and held it out in his hand with his palm open. It gleamed, shiny and golden.

Molly took it and held it up in the lantern light. She gasped.

"Mama's locket!" I cried.

    Very graphic for elementary school.

I read this when I was in fourth grade and was terrified. I don't consider myself overly sensitive, it's just a very graphic book. One of the main characters has had his tongue chopped off by Weasel, which I found horrifying. I had multiple nightmares about being hunted down by the antagonist, spent plenty of time crying about having to read it, and eventually had to ask to be allowed to read something else instead. Maybe it's okay for those who love scary movies or horror books, but it was absolutely terrible for my nine-year-old self. I would advise parents to decide themselves if their children are ready for such a graphic and grisly book. It might have been okay if I were a few years older. Also, a lot of people say it's a good book for people who don't usually like to read; I have always loved to read, and gore and blood have never been the reasons. There are plenty of suspenseful books that don't include a wild psychopath cutting out a man's tongue and then forcing him to watch as his wife and unborn baby are murdered.

Too graphic for schools - Parents Beware

I am surprised at the purely positive praise this book has received. There are many graphic and violent scenes described that were disturbing to my 9 year old. For example there is grotesque murder depicted where the 'Weasel' kills a pregnant woman right in front of her husband. To me this is too much for an educator to arbitrarily read to children. Perhaps I am just too old school but parents should be advised of this and an alternative presented to reflect appropriate values. The book does have some merit but the graphic nature of the 'evil' committed is too much for elementary children and parents should be advised at any age of such a curriculum so they can make their own choices. Too bad my daughter was not afforded that and I have to address the issue.

    Its a spectacular ,suspencful book.

The book weasel is a five star book about a boy who is haunted in his dreams about a blood thirsty man who is refered to as 'Weasel'. The book is an unforgetable classic. This book is excellent it is good for kid under age 12.It only has some vulgar language and partial cannabilism but it needs a little rising action in the middle of the climax.

    great nonfiction

The story starts as kids who are waiting for their father to return. A man comes to their door with something of their father's. They follow and find weasel. If you like nonfiction that seems too good to be true, you'll love this book.

Weasel Leads Directly to the Library!

The excitement, adventure, pathos, and historical period catch and hold the listeners attention from the very first page. Yes, I read this story orally to my fifth grade reading classes (100 students) every year and the result is always the same. They love the story and can't wait to get to the library to obtain their own copy. Reading orally to fifth graders? Absolutely! You're never too old to be read to.

    To this day

I read this book about 8 years ago when I was in elementary school. I remember reading this book and LOVING every single minute of it. It's hard for a book to keep me interested, but this one did the trick. It is so descriptive it literally painted a picture in my head. While reading the book it almost felt as if I was being let in on this wonderful secret that was Weasel. To this day, I still recommend it to people (even my age) and list it as one of my favorite books of all time.

I would give it ten stars if I could!!!

I have to say that the book was sort of blood and guts but it was interesting. A very detailed book. If I had a chance to read it again I would take it. The book has a great setting and ending.
