The uprooting of seven million civilians - women, children, and elderly men - from their homes in the German provinces of East Prussia, Pomerania, and Silesia following World War II is largely unknown in the United States.
Weeds Like Us is a gripping true adventure story about the author's own East Prussian family. The author's earliest years were spent in relative comfort on his grandfather's farm in East Prussia during World War II. For him, life in Hitler's Germany was the natural order of things. Then, in January 1945, just after the author's seventh birthday, the Russians rolled into East Prussia. Full of unexpected twists and turns, Weeds Like Us tells the story of what happened over the next six years, as the author's family tried to make its way safely to the West.

Very good book. Tells the struggles of being in war how it really was. We are so pampered in our on world and even though we think we have it tough, most of us can still afford things. In war one cannot afford anything. War is the pure struggle of survival on the cost of health, status, religion or anything else we belive in.
This book is a must read! It is a compelling warm and human story of a young boy and his family facing hardship and unabiding love during World War II in Germany.
Rarely do we think of the other side of the story and the horrors that the German people themselves endured. Weeds Like Us made me laugh and cry all at the same time.
What a group of family characters! Each one with their own endearing tale to tell.
I was sorry to turn the final page.
I beg the author to continue his tale. It is certainly a family I would follow lovingly through their travels and through the years.
