First published in 1960, this latest reissue of one of Edward Eager's "magic" novels holds its own. Long autumn days are made more interesting when six friends discover the magical properties of an old abandoned well. Each of the kids is involved in a particular adventure and each relates his/her own story. James finds a home for a lonely orphan and brightens a teacher's life, old Mr. Appledore and Madame Salvini find love in the apple orchard, Dicky LeBaron gradually changes from thug to hero, and James, who rescues a damsel in distress, gets more than he bargained for. With subtle humor and insight into human behavior as the strong points, readers will quickly realize that all of the magic is not in the well. References to a hi-fi, Elvis, and a Thunderbird date the story as do the illustrations of kids in 60's style clothing. Quentin Blake's cover art may have been a better choice throughout the book. The awkward handling of the arrival of the first black family in the neighborhood confirms the author's discomfort with the topic. Flaws aside, this is a pleasant, nostalgic read that still has the magic to delight.

    A great sequel to 'Magic or Not?'

    If you're part of a club that does good deeds for others or have read 'Magic or Not?' and really enjoyed the book, this novel is for you. Laura, James, Lydia, Kip, and Gordy are back, put in another magical adventure! But this time, Laura sets up a club called the 'Well-Wishers' (thus the name of the title) and has everyone in the club--including her little sister Deborah--write about their own magical adventure. It all starts when the friends believe their magic adventure is done forever. So, Gordy threatens the magic well in 'Magic or Not?' so that it will start its magic again. The well must have heard, because it began to grant wishes. Each help their community, learn moral values, and even the true meaning of romance! This hilarious book is for those bookworms who love Edward Eager's book or is just looking for fantasy book full of adventure!

    You will believe in magic....

    ...but maybe not the kind you're thinking of. I think the true joy in reading this book and the events contained within is wondering (or maybe even figuring out) whether what happens is magic, or human kindness. The children are written extremely well, and some of the blunt yet heartfelt sentiments will make you laugh out loud. I won't give anything away, but I truly recommend this book to fantasy, and reality, genre lovers. Which is it? You decide. Read and enjoy!
