Meet the Author

Author Gloria Mallette, a Finalist in the 2009 and a Winner in the 2007 National Best Books Awards in African American Fiction; and a Winner in the 2010 and 2008 National Indie Excellence Awards in African American Fiction was first published in 1995 by Holloway House with the title WHEN WE PRACTICE TO DECEIVE while she was employed part-time as a Federal Perkins Loan Coordinator at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York. However, by 2000, with five manuscripts and several rejection letters from major publishing houses in her file cabinet, with a nudge from her husband, Gloria stepped timidly out onto the self-publishing track.

In April of 2000, Gloria self-published SHADES OF JADE and by August had sold 13,000 copies when Random House came calling. SHADES OF JADE was re-published in June of 2001 and has since made several best sellers lists, including Black Board, Essence Magazine, The Dallas Morning News, The Washington Post/Washington is Also Reading listing and Upscale Magazine.

Gloria has been featured in ToDay’s Black Woman (2003, 2007),The New York Daily News (2000), USA Today ( 2001), The Pocono Record (2006, 2007), and has a novella, COME TOMORROW, featured on the USAToday.com website.

To date, Gloria has ten titles: SASSY, LIVING, BREATHING LIES, IF THERE BE PAIN, WHAT’S DONE IN THE DARK, DISTANT LOVER, THE HONEY WELL, PROMISES TO KEEP, WEEPING WILLOWS DANCE, SHADES OF JADE and WHEN WE PRACTICE TO DECEIVE.

Spring of 2010 marked a new beginning for Gloria. She realized her lifelong dream of becoming an artist. She now paints in acrylics in addition to continuing to write.

Gloria Mallette was a life long Brooklyn, New York resident, but she now call the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania home.

    A page turner

    What a good book! How can a person have so much hate and against their own family member. The story line and characters all weaved together well, ended with a big bang!....I've read a from this writer years ago and will make it my business not to sleep on her for so long.....Also check out her book Shades of Jade another 5star book!!!!!

    You must read this book!!!!!

    This is one of the best books I have ever read, hands down! I could not study for my exams becaue I could not put this book down. I was even reading this book at red lights and in the drive through because I could not put it down. This is Gloria Mallette's absolute best book. I promise you it is a definite pageturner. Good luck trying to sleep at night, because you won't be able to put this book down! Get it today.

    VERY GOOD

    This was a very good book and I truly enjoyed it. This was truly a messed up family, especially that evil sister. I guess some people have mental problems they can't handle.

    It will come out in the light

    I enjoyed this book and all of Gloria's books. She always gives you a little family drama with a good plot. Her books are always part mystery (if you enjoy that). My book club will discuss this book the end of the month. I wasn't terribly happy about the ending. Enjoy!

    What's Done in the Dark Shall Come to Light

    This book overall was the best book I've read for the year 2006. I finished the book in two days and was a page turner. I highly suggest to those who enjoy a little mystery and drama to purchase the book.

    A fabulous family drama

    In New York City sisters Celeste and Katrina are enemies. Whether it was cutting the violin strings of Celeste¿s instrument or battling over a banana, they fought. When Celeste was seventeen she and her parents attended a family wedding in Ohio while Katrina instead stayed home. The trio returns to New York where Celeste catches Katrina in bed with her boyfriend.----- Several years later Celeste is married to Willie Alexander they have a little girl Justine while living in a brownstone in Bed-Stuy. However, Willie is murdered in a hotel room with his girlfriend Renee nearby. Though keeping an upper lip especially for the sake of her daughter, Celeste is stunned by the betrayal. Next the house is broken into as if someone was searching for something.------ In Washington DC, Katrina's husband Gordon is hospitalized in a coma caused by a stroke and non treatment of diabetes and high blood pressure. On top of that Joan arrives claiming to be Gordon¿s wife. The sisters need each other, but can they find each other?----- WHAT'S DONE IN THE DARK is a fabulous family drama starring real people. The story line borders on soap opera, but the skill of Gloria Mallette is in turning up the troubles yet never allowing her solid story line to turn into soapsuds. This is accomplished because of the robust extended cast that makes up key parts of the spheres of the sisters. Fans of sibling rivalry tales will enjoy this fine look at two sisters down in life who cannot depend on one another to help them through their respective traumas as blood may be thicker than water, but so is toothpaste.---- Harriet Klausner

    What's Done in the Dark WILL come out in the Light

    Excellent is just an understatement of this book. I haven't read a page turning...can't put down book like this is a very very VERY long time. I was reading this book when I was in-processing new soldiers in the Army....I was just about reading it in my sleep (smile). Mrs. Mallette you have truly out did yourself on this one. This book is just a Master piece of yours. In reality this book really should get 10 stars. It was like being right there in the midst of each one of these characters. Well the bottom line, this was really a good book (smile). I just can't say enough GOOD things about it so I am going to just end here. Thank you, Gloria for sharing your talent with us.

    Great Book

    I thought this was a great book. It had a lot of drama, which is always a plus. I finished it in two days. I didn't like the ending but overall it was a good book.
