Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Andrew Gavallan, based in Scotland, runs a helicopter company operating in Iran during the Shah's reign. When Khomeini comes to power, Gavallan must get his pilots and their families, and his valuable helicopters, out of the riot-torn country. Complicating matters is his power struggle with his company's secret owner, the Noble House of Hong Kong. The pilots' escape efforts form the basic story but as usual in a Clavell novel the action sweeps across many lives: lovers, spies, fanatics, revolutionaries, friends and betrayers. British, Finnish, American, and Iranian, all are caught up in a deadly religious and political upheaval. Clavell effectively portrays the chilling and bewildering encounters when Westernized lifestyle clashes with harsh ancient traditions. This novel, the fifth in what he calls his Asian Series ( Noble H o use, King Rat, Tai Pan, Shogun ) is certain to be in much demand. A.M.B. Amantia, Population Crisis Committee Lib., Washington D.C.

    more from this reviewer

"Sow to the wind and you will reap a whirlwind." Bible

James Clavell, with his complex plots and lengthy novels, could have set the standard to which Tom Clancy took to the next level.

In "Whirlwind" it is 1979, a time of revolution in Iran. The country is in a life or death struggle without the Shah.

A British helicopter company owned by Andrew Gavallan and the Noble House in Hong Cong. The members of the company wonder how much longer they will be able to operate their bases throughout the land.

In Aberdeen, Gavallan and Linbar Struan discuss the direction of the Noble House and what should be the proper course of management. It is easy to see that these two powerful men do not like each other.

The novel could easily be a text book on the Iranian revolution. However, like most of the author's books, strict adherence to historical facts is not always the case. We do learn that even in 1979, there was a conflict between the Sunnis and the Shiites. There was also distrust and dislike for outsiders such as the Americans, Canadians and British who were looking after their oil interests in Iran.

A long and detailed book, but interesting.
