Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
A fiercely independent female bush pilot, a male firefighter still battling a case of the nerves, and a serious blaze in a small Mexican town are the starter fuels for this first book in Jill Shalvis' hot new series about firefighters. Danger gets the adrenaline pumping for both Lyndie Anderson and Griffin Moore, but it's going to take a whole lot of courage for their budding romance to overcome the battle scars from previous losses and the baggage from long-held notions of personal freedom. Readers who enjoy fast-paced, contemporary romance laced with courage and adventure will find they've come to the right book. Ginger Curwen

With a very sad and poor attempt at writing, White Heat is juvenile and predictable. I found this book in a Cafe where you can read for free. Don't waste your money.. Just look for it in the Clearance Bin of a used book store. I'm sure they won't have it in the Library.

    Jennifer Wardrip - Personal Read

Griffin Moore lost his sense of self a year ago when twelve fellow wildfire fighters lost their lives on a mountain in Idaho . He's pulled away from his family and friends, doing nothing more than sitting on the beach in California and mourning his loss. That is, until his brother, Brody, shows up, somehow managing to talk him into volunteering to fight a fire in the Mexico mountain lands.

His pilot to San Peubla, the village hoping to escape the burning acreage, is Lyndie Anderson, a tough-as-nails woman who was raised by her military grandfather--and has the "need no one" act down to a science.

I LOVED this book! Not just the sexual chemistry between Griffin and Lyndie, which is undoubtedly hot, but the way the characters were portrayed--their own private needs, desires, and demons.

You won't go wrong with this book. There's action/adventure in the form of the fight against the wildfire; passion not only with the budding relationship between Griffin and Lyndie but that of some important secondary characters, as well; and just a lot of feel-good story interspersed with the kinds of ups and downs that make people tick.

One hot read! (And I'm not talkin' about the fire!)

Great book - fast paced - I flew through it in one sitting. Loved Lyndie and Griffin. Jill Shalvis has such a great way of making you fall for her characters, flaws and all. In fact, it's their lack of perfection that draws me in and makes me root for them. I can't wait for Blue Flame!

    Good read

You really felt for both main characters in this book. I felt it could have gone a little deeper emotionally, but it still was good and heartwarming.

A character driven poignant love story

In San Diego, wild land firefighter Griffin Moore still feels guilt and remorse over watching twelve people including his best friend die in an inferno in which he blames himself for not getting everyone out; he has not worked a fire since. His brother informs Griffin that he has found him work in Mexico to keep a runaway fire from destroying a small poor village......................... Pilot Lyndie Anderson flies Griffin to Mexico, but is shocked that he does not want to be at the fire. When she asks him why he volunteered, he explains that he did not. As they walk the perimeter, he realizes that the fire must be stopped before it goes uphill or it will hit the village. As they fight the fire, Griffin and Lyndie are attracted to one another, but he says he is in it for the long haul while she insists no long term relationships for her. He counters by saying he may be mentally screwed up, but he will teach her to risk her heart........................ The first two fire fights are very exciting leading to readers feeling the heat and smoke and worrying about the safety of the caring people fighting the blaze as well as the villagers. Though the fire was contained and this may be ignorance on my part, it seems strange that the hero left for home when he did because he left behind amateurs to insure no sparks rekindled. Still this is a terrific heated romance in which the temperatures are generated by something besides the magnetism between the lead duo................................. Harriet Klausner

    Just ok

    ## I'm a huge Jill Shalvis fan, however I have mixed feelings about this book. The writing style was terrific as always and I did like the firefighter angle. Also, I love, love that Jill didn't write the hero as a man-slut like almost any book you read now days. The biggest problem for me was that I didn't feel any chemistry AT ALL between the hero and heroine. And that's a must for me. SPOILER ALERT: Also, the heroine was fighting to stay detached over and over and then finally the hero talks her in to taking a chance and then the next morning he says: nevermind, I can't. I thought I could but I can't. Then, BAM the next day he changes his mind and is in love ? SERIOUSLY? And all is forgiven. So, I enjoyed some of this book but not all of it (ergo 3 stars).

Not as good as the Lucky Harbor series. This book was interesting, but I just didn't feel a "connection" between the main characters; couldn't feel the romance developing. I've read every one of the Lucky Harbor books, but I don't think I'll read another of this series.

    Recommend if interested in adventure

This book is for someone interested in travel and adventure. Should also be interested in our forestry and protection of it. Shows what our forest fire fighters have to go through at the turn of the wind, also could be our regular fire fighters. Little romance thrown in also.

A good and interesting read, would read other books of hers.

    Good read

This book started out great and then started going downhill halfway through it. The characters were strong, stubborn people but ended up turning into sappy, wimpy, lovesick teenagerish sorta thing and it kind of ruined the story. But overall the book was an okay read. I just wish that once when a romance starts out with strong characters they stay strong. I have yet to find one where they become stronger together, instead of becoming softy wimps when their together.

    Pretty good read

I really enjoy Jill Shalvis's books, but I can only give this 3 stars. The story is good and well written, but I felt it sort of plodded along after the halfway point. The characters are definitely likable, but that wasn't enough. I usually read books very quickly - and all at once. This one took me days - and two books in between - before I finished. Like I said, well written but I'd pick up one of Ms. Shalvis's Lucky Harbor books for a better read.
