Overview

The inspiration for the Sci Fi channel television series

In Chicago, someone has been killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry Dresden's half-brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too...

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
In the ninth installment of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files -- a supernatural saga that blends hard-boiled mystery with contemporary dark fantasy -- everyone's favorite staff-toting wizard detective, Harry Dresden, investigates a series of suspicious suicides involving Chicago-based witches. Soon, though, he is drawn into a deadly and potentially apocalyptic power struggle that includes rival vampire factions, a nightmarish army of ghouls, a gangster kingpin, an undead femme fatale, and Dresden's vampiric half brother, Thomas.

When Dresden finds bizarre calling cards magically hidden on the bodies of alleged suicide victims (references to Exodus 22:18: "Suffer not a witch to live"), he sets out to find the killer before more innocent practitioners can be killed. Accompanied by tough Chicago cop Karrin Murphy, his overzealous apprentice, Molly Carpenter, and his trusty temple dog, Mouse, Dresden is shocked when he discovers that his list of suspects includes more than a few old adversaries -- and his very own brother, who has been keeping something secret…

If imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, Butcher should be more than pleased with the success of his Harry Dresden novels (Proven Guilty, Dead Beat, Blood Rites, et al.). Since the publication of Storm Front in 2000, dozens of comparable series combining pulp noir mystery with contemporary fantasy have been released -- some of which, like Charlie Huston's Joe Pitt novels and Mario Acevedo's Felix Gomez saga, are quite exceptional. Longtime fans of Butcher's series, as well as new devotees of the Sci-Fi Channel's Dresden Files show (www.scifi.com/dresden), should thoroughly enjoy Butcher's latest romp through Chicago's paranormal underworld. Paul Goat Allen
Publishers Weekly

At the start of Butcher's superlative ninth Dresden Files novel (after 2006's Proven Guilty), hardboiled wizard detective Harry Dresden learns that someone is killing Chicago's minor wizards. Joined by his police friend, Sergeant Murphy, and his Amazonian apprentice, Molly Carpenter, Harry discovers that his brother, Thomas, is a prime suspect. As a Warden of the White Council, at war with both the Red Court of blood-drinking vampires and the White Court of psychic vampires, Harry has to go into action. And there's plenty of that, including a battle with ghouls on the lakefront that turns into a gripping flashback of another encounter with ghouls some years before in New Mexico. The large cast features such finely drawn characters as gangster Gentleman Johnnie Marcone and Harry's first love, Elaine Mallory. This installment is sure to get a lift from The Dresden Files TV series, which debuted on the Sci-Fi Channel in January. Author tour. (Apr.)

Library Journal

When Police Lt. Karrin Murphy calls in hard-boiled P.I. and professional wizard Harry Dresden to investigate an apparent suicide, Dresden recognizes that the deceased is, in fact, a victim of murder—and that the killer is targeting witches. Sensing a vendetta that involves the supernatural underworld of modern-day Chicago, Dresden, along with Murphy, rushes to find the killer, even if the search leads him uncomfortably close to his own family. The latest in Butcher's (Dead Beat) supernatural noir series featuring Dresden delivers a tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel's TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner. A good choice for most fantasy collections, this has strong crossover potential.

    Great addition to the series..

This was a great book! There isn't any other series that I've read yet that is worth 24 books to its name like this one. It stands out from the crowd and while may start out a little slow the first 25 or so pages, once it picks up speed it won't let you put it down.. simple as that. I stayed up til four in the morning finishing this book, and it was worth every minute. The characters are perfect, along with their flaws and personalities. They all feel like they have been fully fleshed out by Butcher in a way that only he could. If you are debating whether to get this book, don't think about it, just do it..

White Night, the Dresden Files, Book 9

The best Dresden Files book since "Summer Knight"!!! When helping Chicago's SI with a suicide, Harry finds that his brother, a vampire of the White Court is the prime suspect. Working along side Murphy, their relationship is growing beyond that of just friends, but can Harry get over that she and Kencaid went to Hawaii? Once a coven is found to be Thomas's next target, an old enemy of Harry's shows her face. And, his old childhood friend and first love, Elaine is there to protect the witches of the coven. The weight of being a warden is bearing down on him, along with teaching his apprentice, Molly. Once again, with the aid of Marcone and Lasciel, Harry is able to uncover a threatening plot of the White Vampires.

    Another awesome case

Jim Butcher continues his epic Harry Dresden series with White Night, and if the reader learns only one thing from this addition in the series: You don't mess with Harry Dresden.

Molly from the previous story is more prevalent as well, and is still being her rebellious teenage self...which sometimes gets her into trouble and sometimes is just what Harry needs for the case...

    Wonderful Read

I have read all the books in this series up to this volume. His characterizations I find engaging and vivid. The stories may seem at first too unbelievable to be very compelling, but Mr. Butcher pulls it all off masterfully. Some of the elements of his stories are handled by him with a unique and fluent gift of story-telling. Somewhere I read a review of him by another author, who paid him the highest compliment one author could give another - "I wish I had thought of this myself."

It is easy to fall for many of his characters - Murphy, Brianna, Elaine, Dresden's brother Thomas, Michael and his whole family. My personal favorite is Susan and I hope we hear more about her. The bad guys and ladies are about as bad as you can imagine, and then some.

I am confident that we have far from heard the last of Mr. Butcher and whatever great stuff you hear about him, trust me - it is well deserved.

    Fast Paced, Funny, Exciting

I started reading the series 1 1/2 months ago and couldn't put it down. The characters are engaging and the style is a good mix of drama, excitement, and dark humor!

    Jim Butcher is a genius!

Of all of the books I've read (many!!:)), I have yet to find an author to continue finding ways to keep one character and his life intriguing to read. This entire series has developed a sense of depth unlike any other character in a book I've read. White Night is no exception! This story keeps growing and things that felt a bit insignficant at first glance a few books back become a basis for a full "side" story. It creates a sense of interest as you read. It makes you wonder which supporting detail will become a future story. Next is Small Favor!

    Harry does it again!

Harry Dresden the capable other world crime fighter does it again. In the proverbial saying he slays the dragon and in the process grows and gains in power. Harry's journey is not an easy one but one of growing in power and coming to a sense of self-actualization. Each encounter brings Harry into an unknown realm and it is gratifying to see his personl growth and his coming to terms with his past. His loyalty to family members like Thomas are so real to life and Harrys propensity to follow his heart makes Harry all the realer. Harry's destiny is ever upward and forward and his evolution of growing in spiritual ways is profound. Harry is the kind of man you would want for a real life friend. You know he would always be there to watch your back!

Starts Out Slow...Ends With a Bang!

I really enjoyed the Dresden Files tv show on Scifi, so I decided to pick up one of the books. At first I wasn't to into the book, it started out slow and Dresden kept referring to things from I guess some of the other books, which I hadn't read. I also didn't like how jaded Dresden seemed to be compared to the tv character. But by the end of the book when the action started to pick up and things became more humerous I enjoyed the book. I would probably recommend you start at the beginning of the series instead of just picking up this book. Overall not a bad read.

My First But Not My Last

I can't believe I haven't read any of Butcher's novels before, especailly since I loved the one season of the Dresden Files on Syfy! Now I'll have to backtrack and get the previous editions.

    I Also Recommend:

'Dresden ex Machina' A very predictable book... in a very unique, intelligent, you-will-enjoy-this-lots sort of way.

When I was taking writing classes my mentors always warned me about deus ex machina, or having some extra unexpected something come to save our hero, ship, city or farm (etc) at the last second... you know how the evil tree plows are just about to destroy the forest and ruin the lives of all the nice animals, but at the last second something steps in and declares the forest protected for ever and ever (until the sequel) Now don't get me wrong as I do love a happy ending, I only saw Titanic once because honestly I would have never let go.

That is how these books have been for me, I can sit down and enjoy them becuase I know that Dresden WILL pull something out of somewhere and at the last minute he will turn the tables on impossible odds. By bringing in some last minute characters (usually found in previous episodes), conviniently located just-what-I-needed articles or perfectly timed natural events our hero will save the world... or at least Chicago.

But what is wrong with that? Many of my heros had magic can-cut-through-anything swords or one-of-a-kind rings that could make them invisible and by golly I loved the fact that my heros had fire breathing, magic annulling, diamond clawed, laser eyed, warp speed, smarter-than-a-human, golden egg crapping, one-of-a-kind pega-uni-hydra-dragonamonstersourous(es) that our hero found as an egg/puppy/tadpole and raised them as their own. Possibly because I always wanted one of my own.

So there you have it, any of these Dresden books will give you the same thing: a really great adventure in a world that you know but with enough originallity thrown in that you just cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out. Be warned, it is about wizards, fairies, zombies, and vampires with cops, mobsters and sword wielding fanatics thrown in... so unless you enjoy books where the author is having as much fun writing them as you are reading them... well then you will just need to find your own Machina

    White Night

His book is excellent the characters have real depth because the author scope of capturing the readers attention and drawing the reader into the story making he/she feel like they are actually in the story. I predict that he will beat stephen king at writing excellent storylines and ground breaking stories.

I read this book in two days. I didn't get anything done around the house, I just sat and read ALL day! It was terrific! Highly recommended. All I need is for Jim Butcher to spin off a series based on Harry's brother, Thomas and I'm set!
