Meet the Author

Jeff Kinney
Jeff Kinney

Jeff Kinney is an online game developer and designer, and a #1 New York Times bestselling author. In 2009, Jeff was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. He spent his childhood in the Washington, D.C., area and moved to New England in 1995. Jeff lives in southern Massachusetts with his wife and their two sons.

Biography

All his life, Jeff Kinney wanted to be a cartoonist. As a student at the University of Maryland in the 1990s, he published his comic strip "Igdoof" in the college newspaper, but he soon discovered that succeeding in the real world as a syndicated cartoonist is no easy task. So, after school, he supported himself as a newspaper designer and computer programmer, while working out ideas for a children's book that combined cartoons with conventional storytelling.

Once he conceived the concept for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kinney devoted nearly six years to developing the storyline and artwork. Fashioned as a journal with appealing, expressive stick figure drawings on every page, Diary is narrated in the pitch-perfect (and hilariously deadpan) voice of a not-always-likeable but totally believable tweener named Greg Heffley. Poised to make the painful transition from elementary to middle school, Greg struggles with the usual preteen angst: bullies and cliques, annoying siblings and clueless parents, faithful friends and cute, unattainable girls.

Although Kinney never intended to publish his book online, when the opportunity arose to serialize Greg's adventures on Funbrain.com, he knew he'd found the perfect way to reach his target audience. In 2004, the comic strip began appearing in daily installments on the website. The feature was a huge hit, attracting thousands of hits a day. Moreover, the online version paved the way to Kinney's five-book deal with the publisher Harry N. Abrams.

Armed with fresh, new story lines, Kinney launched the print sequence in 2007. From the very first installment, entitled simply Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the series was a success -- especially with reluctant readers who found the diary-with-doodles format far more accessible than conventional books. Greg, with his hilarious antics, backfiring schemes, and totally unfiltered thoughts (his mom has agreed not to read what he writes!), has struck a responsive chord -- both with kids who identify with his growing pains and with grownups who vividly recall their own.

Good To Know

  • Jeff Kinney claims that he writes for kids because he believes the most interesting and funniest stories come from people's childhoods.

  • In an interview with familyeducation.com, Kinney was asked which he liked more: writing or drawing cartoons. He answered this way: " Both writing and drawing are a struggle for me. I am cursed with being a very slow illustrator, and this book requires at least 1,000 illustrations. So sometimes, the joy of illustrating is a bit diminished by the amount of time that illustrating takes. What I enjoy is seeing the words and illustrations come together on the page."

  • Kinney knew he'd made the grade when Diary of a Wimpy Kid was chosen to appear as a plot point on the popular Disney-produced preteen series Wizards of Waverly Place.

  • Kinney deliberately avoids putting pop culture references into his stories because he wants them to have a timeless feel. He hopes readers will be able to pick his books up 20 years from now and still be able to relate to themes.

      Great Book!

I bought this book for my 8-year-old grandson. He absolutely loved it! He loves the Wimpy Kid books, but I think he had more fun with this book. He spent all afternoon and the next day working on it and filling in the information.

My 7 year old loved this book!

My son absolutely loved this book. Already obsessed with Diary of a Wimpy kid stories, he loved being able to create one himself. He is seven, and though reads fairly well, he is not one to just pick up a pen and write, as it is much more of a challenge for him. This book motivated him to write and draw, which has improved his skills and helped him to write more in other situations. He also had fun sharing his comics and stories with my husband and I. I highly recommend it.

activity book for kids who like the Wimpy Kid books

This is not a book just to sit down and read through but an activity book or a journal. However, the very first page says, "Whatever you do, just make sure you don't write down your 'feelings' in here. Because one thing's for sure: This is NOT a diary." There are all kinds of activities in which the readers can make lists, answer questions about various topics, make their own comics, draw pictures, and such like. Plus, the end contains 46 blank, lined pages with the instructions, "Use the rest of this book to keep a daily journal, write a novel, draw comic strips, or tell your life story."

When The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which tells the story of Greg Heffley, his family, and his friends, first came out, I heard about it but did not read it because it didn't sound as if it would appeal to me. Later, I was sent a copy of one of the sequels (#5, The Ugly Truth) to review, and my reading of it confirmed my earlier opinion that this kind of book is just not my cup of tea. However, the books are immensely popular with many children, so youngsters who do like "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series might well enjoy the activities in this book. The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book was first published in 2008, but the updated edition is expanded with more than sixty new pages, and has 32 pages of full-color comics, including sixteen brand-new. It is designed to inspire creative expression and encourage reluctant readers.

Great book for ten year old boys

The book was great for a ten year old to write and follow the sometime silly directions to make his own book. Couldn't wait for the next book to come out and had to go back and buy the other ones.

      Highly Recommended!

My eight year old Daryn Wolcott, dreaded to read every night for 30 minutes. I bought him the series Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, and he read two books in one week. Now He asks if he can read all day long. He reads out loud and is proud of it. When Daryn reads now he will read for hours, and its wonderful as a parent to see him enjoy himself doing it. Jeff Kinney helped my son get through the tough dreaded times of nightly reading, (mind you, Daryn already had a library in his room) The Do- It-Yourself Book, Is funny and lets him interact by writting in it, and amazingly when I looked inside of it, Daryn had his best hand writing! I am so proud of Daryn, And Thank you Jeff Kenney for helpping my son Daryn love to read!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself

I gave this to my granddaughter who is in the first grade. She adores it. It encourages reading and writing skills as well as thinking skills. I had first thought it might be too old for her, but it definitely is not. The book is funny, very readable and slightly challenging for a first-grader; however, she has enjoyed it again and again. Perhaps its best trait is that it involves the child in all of these skills. It is an active rather than passive book. It is too young for my fifth-grade grandson, but I believe children in grades one through four would like it. I would recommend it to parents and grandparents.

      Great for 9 year olds!

I bought this book for my 9 year old and he loves it. He has all the other "Wimpy Kid" books and has seen the movie. This book is fun because he got to put a picture of himself on the cover and it keeps him entertained. There are games and activities for him. He will pick it up on his own and work it but it is definitely the book that i make sure to take with me when we have an appointment or down time when we are going to be waiting.

      entertaining

My boys (9 and 11 years old) both enjoyed this book. In fact, they still create/edit the drawings in the book. It's entertaining for them because they share their drawings with each other and laugh about it.
