Embark upon a danger-laden mission within the pages of Ronie Kendig’s riveting Wolfsbane. Demolitions expert Danielle Roark thought escaping from a brutal Venezuelan general was a challenge. Now she’s charged with espionage and returned to the jungle where a new nightmare begins. Will Dani survive or become just another political pawn destined to be lost forever? Can Canyon rescue Dani, armed with nothing but raw courage?

Editorial Reviews

Black 'n Gold Girl's Book Spot

Every second of this book took me on a journey. From the rain-soaked jungles to the courtroom to crazy dangerous secret missions to almost as dangerous family get togethers, each step of Dani and Canyon's is a challenge that you get to experience with them. The best thing about Wolfsbane are these "real" characters who make real-life mistakes. Sure, most of us aren't a part of a covert ops team but we are exposed to some of the same difficult choices and crossroads on our faith walks that Dani and Canyon faced.

Wolfsbane is by far my favorite of the series. I stand in awe of these incredible books and the uber-talented Ronie Kendig. If there are only a few books that you add to your "to-read" list this year make sure one of them is Wolfsbane! You won't regret it. Trust me.

Book Reviews by Lady Katy

There are some books where, when you read the last page, you just have to sit back and take a deep breath to all the awesome stuff that happened in the story sink in…before picking the book back up and rereading the most amazing parts. ;-) That’s how it was with Wolfsbane. Wow! It’s been a few days since I finished this book, but I’m still wrapped up in the story—reliving everything that Canyon and Dani go through...

Two words could sum up what I think of Wolfsbanetotally awesome! As soon as I read the first few pages, I was jerked off on an edge-of-your-seat adventure that didn’t slow until it came to a very sudden—but satisfying—ending. Wow!! And after getting a glimpse at the other characters in the Nightshade group, I want to get the first two books in this series, Nightshade and Digitalis, to catch up on the stories of Canyon’s teammates, Max and Colton. If you haven’t been able to guess yet, Wolfsbane has earned a permanent place on my favorite’s bookshelf. :-)

— Katy McCurdy

Bookworm Hollow

If I could describe Ronie Kendig’s Nightshade series in one word: Explosive.

I can’t get enough of the Nightshade team and each novel proves more exciting than the last! Ronnie is fast becoming a master at delivering heart pounding fiction.

Wolfsbane caused another late night for me, but it was worth it.

— Norma Hutchinson

Fiction Addict

Ronie Kendig is brilliant in the third installment of her Discarded Heroes series, Wolfsbane. Heart-pounding suspense and adrenaline-pumping action keeps the reader pinned to the edge of the chair.

— Elizabeth Olmedo

Read Great Fiction

This is the most amazing book I have read in a long time. It has a high intensity, quick moving plot that doesn’t sacrifice depth of character. Descriptive settings cause the reader to feel like they are living the adventure alongside the characters. The characters, though unique, feel true to life and experience struggles and sins that aren’t solved in the blink of an eye.

Just when you think she’s packed everything into the plot, Ronie Kendig adds another layer. This book is worthy of 5+ stars. It has just the right balance of adventure, suspense, and romance.

If you only read one book this year, this is the one I recommend.

— Kristen Lowery

RT Book Reviews

The author's military background shines through in vivid detail, but the rugged first names (Canyon, Stone, Range) are distracting at first. Then Kendig pulls out all the stops with page-turning action, adventure and danger. Book three in the Discarded Heroes series can pretty much stand alone.

— Chandra McNeil

The Christian Manifesto

In a book loaded with action, great characters, and high emotion, there are some beautiful reminders of God. From His plans for an individual’s life to His amazing forgiveness, there are several gentle reminders of God’s presence in the midst of the storm.

This series has excelled in reminding the reader of many fundamental spiritual truths while providing hours of fast-paced entertainment. Most of all it has highlighted the soldiers who have left the battlefield, but are still haunted by the war. For those that can handle emotion, passion, and raw intensity, this is a fantastic series and one I highly recommend.

— Melissa Willis

Best of the series (so far)

COULD NOT STOP reading this one. I have really enjoyed all the Discarded Heroes books but this one was "wicked good". Seriously wounded main characters who overcome so much to come into their faith and find peace.

Ms. Kendig stretches herself and her writing. Not a "typical" Christian fiction read. Easily fits in with mainstream romantic suspense in my opionin.

That one word describes the whole book: AWESOME.
Phew, what a great read! What an action, suspense, adrenaline filled read!
Everytime I read another book by Ronie Kendig I'm convinced it was her best yet.

Canyon Metcalfe is a guy I could easily love. Maybe because he's a bit like my husband. :) None of his problems are related to my husband, but the way he handles things is alike, so that tells a lot about Ronie's excellent imagination!

Danielle Roark was captured, tormented and raped in Venezuela. She escaped with shocking proof that the cruel general that kept her for six months has nuclear weapons, but at home the American government doesn't believe her. She has to go back to that awful place to come up with more proof.

Canyon's brother rescued Danielle out of the ocean when she escaped Venezuela. He falls in love with Dani, but she's not interested in men... until she meets Canyon. Canyon likes her too, but because of a promise he made to his brother he can't pursue her. Things get complicated when Nightshade is the team that escort Danielle back to Venezuela. Can Canyon live up to that promise?
Is Nightshade capable to find the proof and keep Danielle save?

This book is so fast paced that you hardly have time to take a calming breath before the next action.
Action, adventure, military, suspense and romance lovers - this book is for you!

    Keeps you reading!

I was pleasantly surprised by this whole Discarded Heroes series. Each book is action-packed, suspenseful, exciting. I didn't want to put them down! My only criticism would be that while the action story line was great, the romances were a little too syrupy for me. I'm all for romance mixed with suspense, but at times the love story part was too repetitive. The Christian perspective of the characters was refreshing. Oh that it were so in the real world!

    Horrifide Expectanxcy

Great read. Spectacularly exciting. Waiting on the edge of my seat for the third book. Slightly disappointed in the hero & heroine, since they were not examples to follow. Noone is perfect, but they did not act like christians. God was just an afterthought. Notable diversion in hero behavior exhibited in the first two books that made me pause and question my life. Ms. Kendig still has a masterful talent, but I hope it does not get lost in the shuffle of just trying to sell books.

    A Book to be Experienced!

I was thankful for the review copy of this realistic, thought-provoking, fast-paced novel. It had me look at war in a way I hadn't before.

It's a gift to be able to write such a compelling, death-defying drama that stirs a reader's emotions deep to the depth of their soul. Ronnie Kendig has this gift and talent. This author had me laugh, cry and glued to the page anticipating the enemies next move. I was instantly wrapped up into her characters and there horrific situation. If this book were a movie I would have covered my eyes in several parts because I was afraid of what would happen next and what I might see. Yes, I'm a chicken! Grin! But since I've read several of Ronnie's books already I knew things wouldn't get too graphic. That was reassuring.

Ronie Kendig pens an honest portrayal of how disturbing it is to be a female POW. Women face unique challenges to survive. A person never knows what they'll be willing to do to escape. Fear. Hatred. Guilt. Hope. Finally--Peace are all felt. Ronnie takes the reader through a wide range of emotions with her larger than life characters. The rhythm and flow of this suspenseful story-line took the reader from extreme riveting highs, to heart-wrenching moments you'll never forget. This is a book you'll want to experience.

This author has written a powerful and moving book that transported me to the front lines of war like I've never experienced before. I could feel the intense humidity, hear the explosion of gunfire, see through their night goggles, and hear the intense quiet sounds of the enemy slivering near; it's nothing like you've ever seen or heard before. There is a depth and intensity in the characters that touched me. This is a page-turning action story, with vivid imagery, engaging characters, and a lot of heart. I highly recommend Wolfsbane, It's brilliantly written and an emotionally compelling a book you shouldn't miss!

God's grace and a roller coaster ride!

Ah, yes. All is right with the world because Ronie Kendig has another book in her Discarded Heroes Series out! Her style of writing with strong characters, tight plots filled with suspense and danger and lots of drama from the past all rolled into one is so intense that I can hardly put her books down. Wolfsbane doesn't disappoint and all I could think the whole time I am reading it is - how much longer until the next one comes out!!! If you haven't read Ronie Kendig yet then you must dive in now, but start with the first book so you can enjoy the development of her characters as you go!

I'm going to add a comment regarding some of the controversy around one of the plot lines in this book. Christians aren't perfect. Most of us would like to think we are, but sadly we aren't and we wouldn't need God's grace if we were. This is shown clearly in this particular book and I loved that Ronie stuck her neck out and showed this so well. God's grace will cover a multitude of sins, consequences must still be dealt with but God forgives. I believe this particular storyline will allow some Christians dealing with condemnation to believe this and receive forgiveness for themselves. Kudos to Ronie for her bravery in that area as a writer!

Intense, edgy Christian Fiction from a woman qualified to write a book about soldiers. Intense, edgy Christian Fiction from a woman qualified to write a book about soldiers. Intense, edgy Christian Fiction from a woman qualified to write a book ab

Danielle Roark, a Lieutenant and demolitions expert is in Venezuela with her team when they are ambushed. The men are held for ransom, but as the only woman Dani is taken to their General where she is tortured and raped (a lot) for 6 months. Eventually she manages to escape with a flash drive.
Problem is the information on it is too perfect. The Senate committee doesn't believe her because information on her computer suggests she and the General are in league together, so maybe she's a traitor.

Enter Canyon Metcalfe, black ops soldier with a tainted past and brother of the man who pulled Dani from the ocean after her escape. The guy who (along with his team) has to take her back to the very place she was held.

Tension between the brothers complicated what would otherwise be a straightforward boy meets girl.
But nothing about this book is straightforward! The reader is forced to throw out everything they think they know and by the end you're fighting for the surface along with the characters.

Everything about this book was a surprise to me, from the level of evil, the abject betrayals, the manipulation, the secrets, and the fact both main characters (one present, one past) had in their lives attempted to commit suicide. Coincidence? No, I think God pairs us with the one person who is capable of understanding us all the way to the core.

Bad language: None. "He cursed" is how it's dealt with. Maybe that's not realistic for soldiers, maybe a lot of them cuss every other word but that's okay with me. I can handle it being inferred instead off blatant.

Nudity: Obviously the rapes, not explicitly described, but when the character thinks/talks about it I think it's supposed to make you uncomfortable. It's an uncomfortable topic, but all too real. The two main characters, in a fit of passion while on the mission, do get intimate with each other but it's done off camera. We end one scene with him sliding up the hem of her clothing, and next we find them in bed naked post-making love.

Yes, Christian characters (or at least those who profess to be) don't usually act this way in Inspirational fiction, but it is a realistic part of life. It disappointed me a little that their reactions were like, 'oops'. There didn't seem to be real conviction until later. But I did respect the fact that it was part of their journey, the dealing with it, the moving on and learning, that was real to me.

The narrative when the soldiers are doing their soldering thing felt a little explain-y but hey, I'm not a special ops soldier so I need the why's explained to me.

All in all, a thrill ride of a book that kept me tied up all the way until I'd finished the last page.

    Couldn't put it down!

Ronie has done it again! Wolfsbane is awesome! She has written about some really hard topics but done it in a way that doesn't make you feel uncomfortable or unable to continue reading. Quite the opposite. I sat on the edge of my seat for the last quarter of the book as it got more and more intense waiting to see how things would turn out.

Canyon and his family have a lot more depth than I had imagined. But you could tell from the first book that there were secrets that needed to be uncovered about him. Dani is a great new character and fits into this line perfectly. She is strong, determined and a fighter. She goes through so much but find the will to survive.

I can't wait for the next book to come out in January. And I can only hope that her publishers will approve other books in the series. I love the characters and want to know their stories, too.

    Another great one from Ronie!!!

Ronie Kendig gives us another amazing book in her series that follows Canyon MetCalfe, otherwise known as Midas. While being of the strongest, most dependable men on the Nightshade team, he has undergone tragedy and unimaginable hurt in his career as a Green Beret that will come crashing back into his life. His world is action packed and danger filled, but when he and his team are tasked to take a woman back to a place that was her hell on earth so she can prove her innocence, life gets interesting. Her protection becomes personal and he has to try to fight growing attraction and a brother that has already laid claim to her. Mistakes are made and people are hurt, who will he turn to? Will Canyon be able to admit, overcome, and grow from the mistakes and challenges in his life or will he choose to live his life in a hard shell?

Ronie uses her gift to weave this heart-breaking, thrilling suspense, and heart-warming story that pulls you into it as if you were there with the characters. She has the talent that she is able to write the really hard scenes and also put in the story of redemption and God's amazing love and forgiveness. Definitely an awesome book that I recommend to everyone. You might want to have tissues nearby for happy and sad tears...and something under your chair in case you fall off the edge :)

another great book by Ronie Kendig

Wow what a book!! Nightshade is back, better than ever! On a mission to help a young woman prove her innocence of treason, they are on a very dangerous mission into the Boliverian Republic of Venezuela. Danielle Roark had been captured there and held prisoner for two years, repeatedly raped, beaten and tortured, she finally escapes with enough evidence to bring the horrible leader of that country down, but a Senate committee believes that she is a traitor to her country, and it seems someone is trying to frame her, just as that! Nightshade will lead her back into the country to retrieve the evidence she needs to prove her innocence. Terrified at the thought of returning there, and possibly being captured again, Danielle has a hard time trusting the team, but her connection to Midas (Canyon Metcalfe) will lead her to trust the team. This book is great. Action, adventure, love, hope, trust, redemption all rolled up into one story. You do not want to miss this book! Ronie Kendig writes action adventure better than the movies! Totally a 5 star book! A high rating for someone who is not a fan of action adventure. This book was provided for review purposes only, no payment was received for this review.

    LOVED this book!

Ronie Kendig is an amazing author. Her third book in the Discarded Heroes series, Wolfsbane, is a no-holds-barred look at what our men and women go through while defending our country. Though a fictional story, Ronie doesn't shy away from the emotional and physical issues our military come home with. She doesn't stay there, though. She brings us on an intense ride while the team carries out a mission to redeem Danielle and ultimately Canyon and bring healing to them both.

Faith, romance, fast-paced action. This book delivers them all along with an ending that leaves you anxiously anticipating the final book in the series. A definite add to your bookshelf!

Not available as a "nook book"

I am so disappointed. I have been looking forward to the release of the book only to find out it isn't available as a "nook-book".

    RONIE RAMPS IT UP!!!

Let me say up front this is not going to be my typical review. I've thought long and hard about how to describe this book without giving anything away and without overusing certain adjectives. That being said, when I read the last word of this book I took a deep breath and said "WOW!" I was grinning from ear to ear. Wolfsbane is the BEST book yet in the Discarded Heroes Series.

Tension mounts from page one... no, from paragraph one...no, from the first word and it is a non-stop roller coaster ride until the last. There were moments when the tension was so palpable I found myself putting my hand up to my neck in fear of what would happen next. I think I earned a few new frown lines over this one but it was worth it!

Seriously, if you even remotely like military thrillers then you will like this book. You don't have to read the first two although I highly recommend starting with the first book and progressing through the characters lives and experiences. Each one builds on the other and you really get to know these Discarded Heroes.

Ronie Kendig shows masterful articulation in bringing to light the horrors of war and the healing that can take place through surrender to Christ in all things! She shows us that He is our redeemer, even amidst the worst nightmares in life, and reaches down to where we are, cradling us in His arms, lifting us out of the pit of hell, and delivering us free from bondage!

I was provided a review copy from Barbour Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for my review. No other compensation was received. This is my honest opinion!

    Heart Pounding Fiction!

Canyon "Midas" Metcalfe a member of the Nightshade black ops team is tortured by his past and pain has manifested itself both emotionally and physically and it has him in a death grip. Danielle Roark, an explosives expert who was captured and tortured after a mission gone wrong in the jungles of South America is at the end of her rope until the handsome Metcalfe brothers come to her rescue time and again. Both Canyon and Dani must face the horrors of the past, risking death at the hands of a sadistic terrorist or the possibility of a lifetime of imprisonment for crimes they didn't commit. As a fan of the Discarded Heroes series it's hard to wait patiently for the next book. I know that it's going to be suspenseful and romantic but that's about as predictable as this series gets. With each book I'm totally shocked and surprised by the bad guy, the setting plot twists but most of all by Ronie Kendig's ability to make me feel connected to the story. Wolfsbane, the latest installment in this thrilling series is no different. I started the book before bed vowing to read a chapter or two and I ended up tearing through over half of the book. The storyline and the suspense grabbed me by the throat and tore at my heart so that I could not set it aside. Trust me. *I received my review copy through NetGalley free of charge in exchange for posting my thoughts on the book.*

    Another fantastic read!

Pulse pounding, throat gripping, heart wrenching ... all what we've come to expect of a story from Ronie Kendig, and Wolfsbane is no exception. This installment of the Discarded Heroes series takes a sobering turn as we meet Danielle Rourk, rescued by Range Metcalfe after her escape from a Venezuelan general. Canyon "Midas" Metcalfe is drawn by her feisty survivor's spirit but tries desperately to stay out the way of his brother's obvious interest in Dani. There are so many reasons why a relationship with her would be a bad idea ... and why he can't possibly be the right man for her. Still haunted by her abuse at the hands of evil men, Dani struggles to find a reason to keep living, and Range's aloof but intriguing brother just won't leave her alone to die. But can he help her find the courage to face her worst fears? This may be my favorite DH story yet ... twists and turns, hidden sins and unexpected redemption, where we see that truly, "all things work together for good for those who love God."
